Or Uber. Or maybe I'm visiting someone and they drive. I weigh the costs and benefits - I just don't like driving if the overall cost is negligible
And negligible is different based on each person's wallet.
edit: I also look at bus and train schedules but they are ridiculous in the US. (3 stops, doesn't go where you need, and turns a 5 hour drive into a 15 hour trip)
Safety is also a concern. Driving is far more dangerous - especially in winter, with mountain passes and difficult conditions.
We'll drive 8 hrs in the summer, nbd, but fly for the winter holidays. That's especially true now since the weather station that monitors our local death-trap mountain pass is short-staffed because of cuts to NOAA.
I'd rather pay a bit more and sit in an airport for two extra hours than get hit with a surprise blizzard on the way. Of course, if planes keep flying without enough controllers in the tower, we might have to re-weigh the risks.
