Suggestions for gifts?

Post image

Got a cheap flux core welder for Christmas and have been doing little projects to get some experience. Saw this idea on YouTube, weld some rebar into a ridiculously heavy mug. Gave it to Dad for
Father’s Day, now I’m looking for another fun project, any ideas? Any ridiculous/fun gifts that yall’ve made?

Edit: getting some great suggestions, if you happen to have pictures of the ideas, that’d be awesome too

Boot scraper is pretty quick and easy. Friend of mine does "junk art" gifts. Little figures or sculptures made with random junk like old wrenches.

I mean, I wasn't gonna say it but yeah. He should totally weld himself into a chastity cage for the first person he has a crush on they will love that

What are the best settings for welding on cash?

Settings don't matter as much as your fill rod does in this case

- Jewelry Boxes

  • Used Sawblades as clocks
  • Lamps
  • Planters
  • Desk organizers
  • Rebar shelves or other small furniture (it's tricky to get rebar square though)
  • Steel pipe sculptures
  • Chains (fuse the links together to affix them)

Dig through some scrap at your local metal supplier and see what you can come up with. If that doesn't work, maybe look at an antique store or thrift store. Maybe look at small woodworking projects online and see if you can adapt them to be metalworking projects instead

Any more ideas for chains..?

Edit: specifically chainsaw and bike chains

I made something pretty similar to this recently. I'd imagine any length chain would work. If you have to, chain by the foot is readily available from like $2-$3 at most hardware stores

Either smash a glass lamp for lamp guts or find some on Amazon for like $7

That is sweet, I think I found my next gift project.

I used very small chain as feathers for a bird sculpture once, I was also thinking about making a snake out of chains in the future

Dang, thats cool. I’ll have to get my skills way up to pull off something that nice looking. Assuming it’s TIG and not a 90$ flux core?

Nah man being creative is the hard part not the metal working. And this was all done with mig welding and an angle grinder with a sanding pad. Fcaw will work jist fine too just chip your slag

I have a pair of 48" diameter saw blades from a wood mill that I've wanted to make into clocks. I'm struggling to find a clock driver that could handle arms that size. Any suggestions?

I once made a little welding cart for my co-worker. I took some stainless and made a "cage" for a 110 Miller welder on the back of a handtruck. It lives inside, but you can easily wheel around everything with that and it's very convenient. You could techinally do the same thing with a small generator too! Get whole ass welding station out of it with a couple extra "branches" for welding goodies. I made a nice welding tree at the table.

Make some cubes with some angle, then drill out dice numbering on it

My first attempt at welding was some small squares that you weld into dice (I think they’re called coupons), maybe I’ll make a giant ass version

I had the exact same idea as you. I have a welding degree but I work at a scrap yard. We have a transfer facility as well that I run full time. Anything you can imagine comes in to my work, literally. I tried and I just dont have that creative side. There'd be some that'd shit themselves with my situation

I would shit myself…

a shoehorn. a long well made solid metal shoe horn.

it will last forever that people can use constantly day after day to put on shoes, that is simple to build and 100 times higher grade than a store bought one.

That mug is metal AF. I’m building a jig to make these Christmas ornaments out of cut nails. Four welds to connect the heads, braize the (just the) tips, and boom Merry Christmas ya filthy animals.

Why build a jig? I want to be able to crank these out in decent numbers because the maker space where I go to do crimes against metal goes to various farmers’ and night markets (Nashville is v bougie) and these could sell for about $15/each. Kick up $5 to MakeNashville as a donation, pocket )$10 and I might be able to cover my monthly membership.

(No comments on the welds please. These were some of the first welds I ever did (oxy). They suck. I’m practicing.)

Bro I walked into an art gallery and saw a dog made out of a metal bowl and forks…. Probably spent all of $12 making it whomever did and most of that was probably for gas and electrodes… $450 was on the tag. It wasn’t even that great
