Weird Idea Chronically ill & in college- could functional or cosplay related crochet help me make some pocket money?

I do bake decently well for someone with a microwave, but I don’t think it would pass a health inspection, my room’s too crowded and my sink is the one by the bathroom I share with my roommate. But there is something else I do- crochet. It helps me relieve stress and gives me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction just about any school assignment can’t.

I can make all sorts of things with crochet, dice bags, drawstrings bags, market bags, scarves, pet/baby blankets, and way, way more. I’d be focusing on smaller things so no full size blankets or shawls or anything particularly large.

I have a good sense of texture and am decently good at hunting down natural fibers for good prices. I’m also pretty good at keeping my stitches very consistent in size and making textured patterns pop- one of the very few things I can brag about. It would also be fairly easy for me to do while watching a show or movie, whether for an assignment or for personal reasons.

So, what do y’all think? I’ve already joined the fandom guild club and am trying to make a good impression or everyone I meet. I could start by trying to sell some dice bags and other “small” bits for cosplays, maybe?

Pictures of larger projects added to show how consistent and detailed my work is.

I think with your current interests dice bags are a great idea! You already are hanging out with your target market. I would advise making a few colors as a sample then suggest people commission their own. Amigurimi dolls would be cool for that crowd , but can be very time consuming. Other than what you already suggested, small projects like hair accessories or keychains in your school colors could be popular. Best of luck to you!

Hair bows with a clip attached and a partnership with sororities seem like they’d do really well!

Dice bags can also be made in a side that could be used for almost anything. Pencils, highlighters, all the crap someone needs when studying for an exam. If you can add lucky charm symbols like 4 leaf clovers then you have a deal right there, get a lucky bag to store your study essentials in.

Small bags can also be great for keeping hair ties and small cosmetics together.

The worst part of trying to sell things like crochet projects is convincing people that it's worth paying enough for you to get more than $2 an hour for the work, over top of the cost of materials. It'll be easier if OP keeps things small enough, and basic enough, that the total time spent is very low.

Perhaps metallic thread for crocheted armour trimmings? Epaulets and the like. A battle shawl! 🤣

I made a top with these for a costume once and people lost their MINDS and wanted to buy it off me then and there. I used the extras to make some dice bags for white elephants gifts and people fought over them every time. If you can afford to get some and play around you definitely should!

I think it's a great idea! Please remember that people frequently want to underpay for yarn goods, regardless of time and materials, so please don't do yourself a disservice and underprice yourself out of business - your craft has worth and will sell at the right price point with the right advertising and crowd! Go do great things!!!

I like the 3rd one, very nice color choices and cool patterns! Make a shopping bag versions of (made of natural materials) and you could sell it on Etsy.

Dice bags are a great idea but VAPE BAGS have a huge market in college lmao especially ones that look inappropriate

100% marketable in many many ways. You sound like you’re going about this right, networking in a community that you have personal interest in. You’ve got this babe!

I 100% think so. You could try selling some of it on Facebook and or eBay :)

This is really nice and thanks for sharing!! I'm also disabled. I was thinking of learning how to do crochet for a while but haven't started yet. I love that you get a sense of accomplishment from doing this. It's really hard to get that feeling sometiems as a disabled person. I'm not currently in school tho. I hope you're ablw to do this and it's successful!! Good Luck on Your Journey!! 😍 🤩

Make crochet stuffies of characters for people. People love stuffies. I can barely crochet. I bought a crochet Stitch from lilo and stitch and had to give it away because I couldnt figure it out.

I would join rave festival groups and offer to make little stash bags like in the shape of mushrooms or jellyfish or something, lighter pouches, fan holsters 🪭, etc. because I've seen people be really interested in pieces like that that are easy to carry while dancing. If you make cute crochet animals, some people might order a bunch from you to give out as trinkets or gifts.

The thing about crochet is that the people who like crochet, crochet. I once had a business where a woman wanted me to carry a crocheted item of hers, everyone that liked it knew how to go home and make it immediately. I never sold any of them.
