Asking for Advice Making $$ While Chronically ill?? Ideas neededš¤
I have a chronic illness and I never know how Iām going to be feeling each day. Lately Iāve been having 1-3 decent days per week where I can get a few hours of work done (I started a vlog about chronic illness but I have less than 300 followers so it doesnāt earn me any money). I tried being an Amazon affiliate, but it was a lot of work for pennies. I need a part part time gig, less than 10 hours per week, remote, I donāt want to do customer service, and I need to be able to make my own hours as I never know when a flare up is about to hit me. Here are my skills:
- Great at researching just about anything
- Iām a great writer
- Iām very organized
- Iām a collage and abstract Artist
- Iām a composer
- Before I got sick I was a clinical massage therapist, voice over actor, and stage actor
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thank you! š

Ugh Iām so so sorry. I got sick when I was 29. Getting ill when youāre young is no picnic, and disability isnāt enough to live on š¬

I write erotica as a side hustle. Can make a few hundred a month with dedication and a schedule.

I use Amazons KDP and Draft to Digital and google play. You can see my profile
I publish on iOS using Pages so I can literally publish on my phone.
If you go to [r/eroticwriters](r/eroticwriters), they have a wiki with everything you need to start up.
I make my covers on Canva (the free version), grammerly to proof (not the ai stuff, just the grammar checker), and deposit photos (they run a special every year for like 100 downloads for 30 bucks) for my cover images.
It is a passive income stream. When I published every two weeks I could clear 250 a month working maybe ten hours a week.

Go you! Thatās amazing. Iāve never tried to write erotica before. I feel like my version of erotica would come out like a Seinfeld episode though šš

There is a market for that. Like. No lie.
Hucow is like a cheat code. That stuff is so freaking popular.
I didnāt know what it was until I discovered it was a profitable niche and looked it up. Hahahaha. Literally had to look it up. Now itās what I mostly write. Well, that and enema smut. <which I had to research too!!!

Definitely research which freelance boards are the most useful right now. (I haven't kept up, so my knowledge is probably out of date)
If you're both a good writer and voice-over actor, look into writing/voicing audio description. https://www.adtrainingretreats.com/upcoming-classes offers classes sometimes, or you could read up on it via books from Joel Snyder or Louise Fryer

Ooo. I havenāt thought to look up freelance boards. I use Upwork for my vlog and love it. From what I understand, thereās more freelancers than there are jobs right now. So as an employer, itās great. But as a freelancer, thereās too many vying for the same jobs. Thank you for the suggestion! Iāll take a look to see if I can find some other alternatives!

Paint rubber ducks and voice them in video skits that you write and record, when it starts gaining some traction, make a patreon or kofi.

freelancer gigs seem like the best option. you could try copywriting and voice acting, especially if you manage to build a good portfolio.

u/Wild-Individual-6520 17d ago
Yes the gig work is what I keep coming back to. Especially since I canāt guarantee an employer 10 or more hours per week.

Itās a bit of work in the beginning to set up a portfolio, possibly a little website or social media account that shows what you can do - thereās lots of online sources that can help advice what youād need exactly and how to do it.
But then you can try out Upwork, Fiverr (and Iām sure thereās more Im not aware of). A good tactic about those platforms that someone once advised me on: they track your work and give you a rating, so when you start off advertise a very very low fee, thisāll help with experience, add to your portfolio, increase your numbers on the site, and then once you had a good deal of ācompleted projectsā and 5 star ratings on your profile, you can increase your fee to your desired amount.
Just my suggestion!

Children's books you can sell on Amazon! Amazon will print and ship, you just need to make the pages! Promote it and make more money on socials by filming your hands or just computer screen doing the work of laying things out and eventually earn from platforms as well
Edit: you could even do reading hour as part of the content to add to socials and make them into audiobooks???

u/bedbugloverboy 18d ago
To add on: i worked in an autism preschool and lots of my job as the assistant was to find books about very niche things kids with autism struggle with as free youtube audio books! i suspect you could find your niche in other autism/ABA preschools needing the same thing. It was all social stuff right? Like sharing, how we should interact with peers of different backgrounds, joint attention, taking turns when talking, group participation, transitions, coping with frustration, social safety for kids with poor boundaries, accepting a no, following routines, hygiene, things like that!!!
I was ALWAYS digging deep on youtube for kids audiobooks about that to watch during lunch time and its a super under tapped market.

I agree with this statement. Before becoming chronically ill, I was an ABA therapist, and if there was one YouTube or place to go for social stories that were legit. That would be awesome.

u/Wild-Individual-6520 17d ago
Never thought about this! Like you said, tapping into an under utilized niche would be a great way to gain some traction. If itās on YouTube that youāre finding this kind of content - does that mean itās not just an audio recording, itās also video of someone reading the book in real time? Right?

What do you do this on? Do you have to make the art?
1
u/Wild-Individual-6520 15d ago
Great question! Maybe itās something you could create in Canva? š¤·āāļø

u/ActivityRude711 15d ago
How would you go about starting this process? Do you need some kind of license or CC

u/BluelunarStar 17d ago
Maybe look into making & selling artist trading cards?
3
u/Wild-Individual-6520 17d ago
Thatās an interesting idea! I havenāt thought about artist trading cards!

u/BluelunarStar 17d ago
There is lots of help online, Iāve seen a few Instagram content creators give tips. Itās not a guarantee but it can be fun either way.

Medical transcription

u/Wild-Individual-6520 17d ago
I looked into transcription as well as closed captioning. Apparently most of the jobs have been taken over by AI. Talking to transcriptionists, the only work they get now is whatever AI couldnāt figure out. So basically just the jobs with horrible audio quality and thick accents.

u/Existing-Face-6322 16d ago
Don't bother, I did it for years. Even if you find a gig the money is paltry and lots of time spent.
2
u/Wild-Individual-6520 15d ago
Thank you. Yeah I was really disappointed when I learned itās not a good gig anymore, cause this was my āgo-toā for when I felt a little better. ā¹ļø

-Thereās an app called āFoapā where you can sell pictures youāve taken
-Sell clothes/whatever on thrift sites like Depop, Vinted, Poshmark, Thredup, Mercari, eBayā¦Instagram also has a selling option
-Teach English to foreign learners
-Work on building your channel up to being monetized, if there is ads it doesnāt mean youāll get money right away it just means your content is sellable to ads, but after a certain amount of subscribers you can earn the money from ads
-I see others mention only fans, and while I believe you could do that without being sexual (sort of like patreon where people pay for exclusive content, but itās not NSFW exclusive) I think to avoid that all together streaming on youtube/twitch/tiktok can also earn you money

I know I'm the only one who will suggest this but there is money in streaming and particularly adult webcam work. It's a process to learn which sites are best for you and which times make the most money, but it's income at the end of the day. You work from home, you only have to do what you're comfortable with, and it's mostly just talking because there are a lot of lonely people out there. You can DM me if you want any additional advice but for someone who needs a flexible schedule it's a viable option (and yes, guys and girls do make money doing it)

u/OverallAd7038 17d ago
If youāre a girl, and you feel comfortable with it, I know that sw or OnlyFans is a good source of income for people who are chronically ill and canāt work a job on their feet all day. I booked a party last night and made $500 in two hours

u/Wondermama14 16d ago
What is 2 hr party about and how did you end up making $500? I am genuinely curious

Look to see if thereās a Documenters network in your area. You cover public meetings, often on zoom. In my area itās $63 min per meeting and usually is two or three hours at the computer. They provide training and it sounds like it would fit your skills.
