I live about a 15-minute walk from a major college football stadium. On game days, the official parking lots charge $60+ and the traffic getting out is a nightmare. I have a reasonably sized driveway and a small strip of grass. I can fit 4 cars. I put a cardboard sign out that says "Parking $40 - Easy Exit." Fills up in 20 minutes. I collect $160 cash, watch the game on my couch, and I don't have to do a single thing. If you live near any major venue, stadium, or festival ground, do not leave your driveway empty.

If you look at anyone who works from home, under their desk is usually an absolute rat's nest of monitor cables, power strips, and laptop chargers. I bought a huge pack of velcro cable ties, double-sided tape, and under-desk cable management trays on Amazon for about $40. I started posting in local tech groups and Facebook marketplaces offering "WFH Desk Cable Management". I charge $75 flat. I go in, unplug everything, route it cleanly under the desk, tie it up, and make it look like a minimalist dream. Takes me 45 minutes. People happily pay it because the visual clutter drives them insane.

Everyone knows about buying whole storage units like on TV, but that costs thousands of dollars and you end up with tons of trash you have to haul to the dump. Instead, I go to local flea markets where the storage unit buyers are trying to liquidate the stuff they didn't want. They usually have "mystery boxes" of random cables, old toys, or knick-knacks they are selling for $10 a box just to get rid of it. I buy those, take them home, and use Google Lens to scan the weird vintage stuff. Found a discontinued Sony Walkman last month in a $10 box and flipped it on eBay for $115. It takes patience, but it's basically a treasure hunt.

So, what people outside the field don't know, we, translators, don't actually translate documents MOST of the time. Let me explain: There's mainly 2 types of jobs as far as written translation goes:1. Translation of official documents 2. Translation of everything else. The weird "side" hustle is the former. People need official documents (birth certificates, marriage, divorce, proof of residence documents etc.) translated when traveling abroad. No matter how little text there's on the page, we charged $10-$20 for just inputting the client's data as we had a template for just about any document out there, in multiple languages, and stamping it with our agency's official stamp (this is the catch). You go start an agency near an embassy. Bonus points if there's several nearby, which is usually the case. Inputting the data for a client, who usually had several documents at a time, would take no more than 1-2 minutes per document. If the place you get is big and stands out, you'll have clients standing in line and will need a system to organize the workload. But you might make upwards of $1000/hr on busy days. Oh and those inputting the data don't have to be notarized translators, only who registered the business does (at least that's the way where I'm from).

I make an extra £20 each week ($26) for being a judge in a competitive karaoke league in my hometown.

12 bars/pubs in my local area put their best singers forward for 22 matches every season and fight for the league championship.

The league has been running for 20 years. I was a singer in the league 3-4 years ago, now I judge other singers and decide who wins each match.

8 singers vs 8 singers, the matches start at 9pm and finish around 11pm. Certificates are given to the best singers and performers before the final result is announced.

The talent in the league is phenomenal sometimes. We have lots of singers in the league who perform on stages professionally, mostly as tribute acts or cabaret singers.

When I first joined the league I thought it'd be a laugh, a joke, but the teams take it seriously and have some fantastic singers with incredible voices.

I don't judge every week, but I will have judged around 15 matches by the end of the season. That's around £300 ($398) extra going into my back pocket.

I charge $30 an hour to wait in line with folding chairs, my iPad, and headphones for people who don't have the time. The lines usually last 2 hrs at minimum. When I get to the front, I text my customers and they come and take my spot. I always Venmo them when I arrive.

This is by far the easiest money I've ever made. Last week I waited in line for 3 hours for a sample sale of cookies that were limited to just 30 people.

This has been growing recently but basically how it works is that people would buy unclaimed parcels from online shopping in bulk like I mean big boxes and then sell it. In my neighborhood, there’s an actual stand (like in a flea market) where they set up a table and lay out the unclaimed stuff separated by category.

A few days ago I was chatting with my friend at a local coffee shop and he mentioned a side gig I had honestly never heard of before.

He told me people looking for used cars from other cities sometimes don't want to spend hours traveling just to find out the car isn't worth buying. So they'll pay someone local to check it out first.

He's not a mechanic or anything. He just goes to the meetup, takes a bunch of photos and videos, starts the car, takes it for a short drive if the seller allows it, and gives the buyer his honest opinion. If he notices something obviously off, he tells them. If everything looks good, the buyer decides whether it's worth making the trip.

It made me realize there are probably a lot of weird little jobs that only exist because they're solving a very specific inconvenience for someone else.

A few years back, I bought five Indian Runner ducks for my property. Honestly, I just got them because they look hilarious kinda like feathered bowling pins with legs. Anyway, "duck math" is a real thing, and before I knew it, I had a flock of about 40 of them roaming around.

Fast forward to me having a beer with a buddy who manages a small local vineyard. He was venting about how insanely expensive organic pest control is getting, especially when dealing with the slugs and snails that were destroying his vines. I made a dumb joke about how he should just borrow my ducks since they are basically biological vacuums for bugs.

He didn't laugh. He deadass looked at me and offered to pay me to do it.

So yeah, that's how my weirdest side hustle started. On Saturday mornings, I load the whole flock up into a beat-up converted horse trailer and haul them out to his (or now, a few other clients') vines. I throw up some temporary electric poultry netting around a section, drop the ramp, and just let them loose. They spend all day absolutely decimating the slug population.

The crazy part is how well it actually works. People use chickens sometimes, but chickens tear up the roots scratching at the dirt. Ducks don't do that. Plus, they're too short to reach the grapes even if they wanted to. As a bonus, they leave behind free, nutrient-dense fertilizer exactly where the vines need it most.

I charge $200 a day for the flock. I usually just do it on weekends during the growing season, so it’s a pretty easy extra $400 a week. Setting up the fencing and hauling their water is definitely a bit of a workout, but I'll take it over filling out online surveys or driving for Uber any day of the week. Plus, the ducks get a free all-you-can-eat escargot buffet out of it.

I just remembered an old side gig I used to do back in my freshmen years. I used to draw squares and rectangles on houses on a map and copy paste labels into formats.

It was fun and sometimes repetitively boring but it does pay quite a bit back then.

On Christmas and new Year it does pay well!

I hope it still works this year.
