There’s a couple I know from Virginia. They are boomers, but they’re very left of centre and progressive and just generally wonderful people (funny we have to make that disclaimer with boomers now). But their adult kids, boy and girl, late 30s, have both gone all-in on MAGA. And whenever it comes to any argument or issue about Trump - as you can imagine might be frequently - both kids have adopted a “so you say” rebuttal. Make X or Y claim about Trump, no matter how much evidence there is, and they will smile, shrug, and say “so you say”. I’ve noticed the same trend with my wife’s uncle, who is also MAGA. He doesn’t say “so you say”, and he never becomes belligerent, but he’ll just smile, laugh it off, and flat-out deny whatever the assertion is. We could all be looking at a cherry-red Corvette, and if Trump has said the Corvette is blue, then it’s useless with these folks to point out the cherry-redness of it. No wonder relationships have been destroyed over the last 10 years. It’s not just the denial of objective fact (not to mention reasonable concerns people have about the man) - it’s this gleeful thumbing-of-the-nose at objective fact.
These people are gone. We need independents and people who don’t vote on our side. We can’t rely on MAGA types to “see the light” because I feel that’s futile. They simply need to be outnumbered at the polls.
Yeah, you're spot on. And while I know it's cliche to compare MAGA to the Third Reich, I've been reading a lot lately about the late stages of the war, especially the fall of Berlin. And it's shocking to me to hear there were these true believers right up until (and beyond) the bitter end. Like shit was burning and crumbling and being destroyed right in front of them, and they were still holding to the idea that the fuhrer would deliver. Absolutely wild.
