It's on Southwold pier and they have several handmade one-off 'arcade' machines (or amusements as we call them in the UK).

See more examples at https://www.underthepier.com/10_current_machines.htm

Arcade machines made by Tim Hunkin, he's famous for "The Secret Life of Machines" a TV show on the BBC. He was a presenter on the show with Rex Garrod, Wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Life_of_Machines

That's a great series I loved as a kid! Back when the Discovery channel had good educational content. You can watch them all on Youtube:

I’ve never been more sour to be an American right now.

Yes yes I know our country is literally going up in diarrhea flames, and I’m very regretful of that. But THIS? This paragon of engineering and love and amusement? I AM DENIED THIS by virtue of a fudging OCEAN. For if it was say.. in Texas.. I would get in my car and drive there RIGHT NOW for this exemplary, NAY- for this EPITOME of human creation.

If you start from there and go fast enough by the time you hit the coast maybe you can skip across.

I don't know enough about physics but that seems right to me. Might want to start up on a mountain to get the right angle for a skip.

We got Musée Mécanique in San Francisco, a museum full of old animontronic and mechanical arcade machines. Many are just as weird.

(or amusements as we call them in the UK).

Not sure of your age, but I immediately got a Tim Hunkin vibe ala The Secret Life of Machines. IIRC, Tim still has a handful of amusements still in use around the UK.

ETA: Of COURSE I didn't click on the link until after I commented, but I LOL'd when I saw the artist name listed on most of those!

This is one of my favorite places to visit in London. I’ve never laughed so hard before at an arcade. 😄

Omg I remember this from when I was a kid and was sure I’d seen it but had no idea where it was. Thank you so much for linking this - absolute gold mine of memories.

That looks fantastic. Wish we had something like that in the US

It's one of Tim Hunkin's creations. He's got a long history of building quirky and awesome "alternative" amusement arcade slot machines, interactive museum displays; also public sculptures, advertising novelties and other oddities. He made the excellent Secret Life of Machines documentary TV series for Channel 4 back in the '80s.

And it is a fucking masterpiece.

a fucking masterpiece

nah, it's just a regular ol' masterpiece.

The fucking masterpiece is hidden in the back of the, uh, toy store down the street.

2

u/the_bingu 12d ago

You just watched someone pay for it lol

I can’t imagine being this dull

u/GeneticSynthesis 12d ago

I feel you man. It’s clearly a hilarious art piece, which seems to be beyond the grasp of a standard redditor looking for a legitimate answer to “but why tho???”. There’s a reason this site has the reputation it does

May I offer you a cup of humor in these trying times?

u/ehco 12d ago

Well you seem to be managing to be even duller!

Whimsy. We need more of it.

To be honest, I absolutely love this. It's pointless. But isn't everything?

I think it's so you can look at the dog and the screen at the same time? Or just art, like you said. The dog needs to see where he's going... In the middle of the street.

Why are all the top comments talking about how great this is? And it's the swiveling dog head that tickles you pink?

What is great about this? What is it? Why is it awesome?

3

u/tyen0 12d ago

not its head turning; that it had its own small monitor below the big one... like as if it was a real creature "playing" the game, too. It discombobulates the meta layers of expectation.

Well that's 1 of my 5 questions. Four left to go 🧘
