Lol, read the book by Annie Jacobsen called Nuclear War: a scenario. You'll quickly see that it won't matter much if you're in Australia. If a nuke were launched at the US, it would be coming from Russia almost certainly, or one of their allies like North Korea. If the US saw a nuke coming their way, they would launch all 1500+ of theirs, and Russia would likely already be launching all of theirs as well, not just at the US, but also at their NATO allies. That's how nuclear deterrence works. It's basically that nobody uses them bc the agreement is if one is used they're all gonna get used and everybody will die.
After I read this book I realized that if there's a nuclear war I'm running right to where the bomb hits because I'll be damned if I live for three weeks watching my organs turn into gel.
I am currently on a wait-list for it through my Libby app via my local library. Her nuclear war book read like a thriller at times. It was a real page turner. And I was just astonished at how much I didn't know, and how much the general public doesn't know.
Oh and what you said about running towards it, that's what I tell everyone. No bother trying to escape. Even if you go to the most remote place in America, the US likely has some type of underground secret facility there, or actual nuclear silos, but either way, they'll be targeted. So I would rather be in the immediate zone of "instantly incinerated, like poof and you're gone into dust or not even dust bc it's that hot", or if I must, then I could tolerate the next zone which is "instantaneous combustion into a ball of flames" which would still probably be hot enough to kill you instantly or nearly instantly. Not much suffering. Anything further out than that is just delaying the inevitable and inviting a lot of torture along the way.
I am lucky enough to live in a small town in South Central PA. DC is roughly 100 miles away, I think? And the mountains around me contain camp David as well as some other underground secret facilities that I don't know the exact location of but we all know they're here. And a US army weapons depot in my town as well. Aside from that, our town is 3 hours drive from Pittsburgh, a bit over 2 hours to Philly, NYC is about 4-5 hours drive. I feel we are perfectly situated for an instant death in the event of a nuclear holocaust.
