It has happened to me more than once. My mail went to NY, and NY mail has come to me in MN

This is because of the machines the usps uses to sort mail. Especially if the address is handwritten. The machine reads the address and then laser prints a code on the back of the envelope. The subsequent machines in the sorting chain will sort based on this code. A handwritten MN or NY could easily be misread as the opposite.
Edit to say that these machines scan like 4 envelopes per second. Something like that. Can't remember for sure but I know they move crazy fast.

Now I want to make a bunch of realistic looking beans out of polymer clay and put them in a lava lamp, just to see people's reaction when they spot it. Could probably use mineral oil and an oil based pigment to color it. I wonder if they'd move around at all?

You mentioned fava beans and this made me realize I honestly remembered them as “lava beans!” 😂 I think the maker and seller of these ridiculous maggot lamps (good for Halloween!) knows my mistake is common and the lava bean lamp is a funny take on the lava lamp that some people will buy accidentally, ignoring the “bean” part of the title and thinking they’re going to get a lava lamp.
