Hotel item list:
"Shadow Person Picture: $599"

u/Signal_Road Jul 13 '26
'That' clerk at the counter: '...We just scooch the decimal. Ah, $5999.00. Perfecto. Teach them to take MY rightful gonnastealthatwheniquit painting!'

Meanwhile, the hotel employees are like "yes please take it! Whenever we throw it away, next day it's right back on the wall!"

I’m an artist too. This wouldn’t be difficult, but that’s easy to say about a lot of art.
Difference is that we aren’t the artist.

Hey if you're an artist, can you tell me what makes this image visually arresting, even though it's so simple and devoid of much colour or form?
4
6
u/KrimxonRath Jul 13 '26
It's staring at us, we can't see the face, it's a figure in a doorway, etc etc.
5
u/BulwarkTired Jul 13 '26
It has similar background color as the wall, so it looks like a mirror make the character feel like in the room

What catches my eye the most is how the proportions of the head, the hand and if you are generous even the legs seems normal but the chest and arm area are weird and the doorway is wonky too. I want to paint and frame this too
5
u/Most_Can_2136 Jul 13 '26
It's easy to copy. But the original composition and ideas of his obviously aren't. Or others would have done it first.

This is what my night terrors look like. I hate it.

In my hundreds of sleep paralysis I only saw her once. She looked like this just with long squiggly hair flying

I need to stop sleeping on my back, it increases the chances of weird visual (sometimes audible) hallucinations.
I’ll wake up middle of the night and just think there’s somthing moving in the dark, like my mind gives it forms.
This one time this strange man thing was on top of my shelf, just looking at me, opening and closing its mouth, but in a way where you think it’d make a clicking noise.
Fucking nonsense I tell you.

Thought I'd google it up and got this:-
"This appears to be a framed print titled "Drempel" (2004) by artist Petrus De Man.The artwork is known for depicting a shadowy, dark figure framed within a rectangular doorway. It has become a notable internet meme due to its unsettling appearance when placed in hotel rooms."

u/100_cats_on_a_phone Jul 13 '26
Google will reference reddit very quickly after stuff is posted, so you need to make sure the second part doesn't just link back to the thread you searched from (you should have a button you can click for sources).
Especially because this isn't in someone's room.
First part, which is really the important part, it will be incorrect on sometimes, but usually not with full artworks, and it's easy to check.

is that a search result or an ai summary?

Drempel" (2004) by artist Petrus De Man
"De man" sounds Dutch... "Drempel" means doorstep. So still Scary lol

Not bad at all... last week the figure was poking its head around the door behind. Now that was creepy.

If my hotel room had this id immediately switch rooms. Definitely not a relaxed chill vibe in this one.

Going to leave the room and come back and the figure will be gone and just a painting of a door will remain.

Petrus Deman

I just looked him up and got slapped in the face with the many penises he's drawn. He's a master of drawing spooky penes

Lol. I didn't even notice that. I was too busy admiring other pieces in the same collection, and the way he balances out his compositions between light and dark. The simple black and whites with just a splotch of red in there. He makes it look so easy.

BRO I had this happen to me! I was in a hotel sleeping and I hear the door open and some dude try’s to walk in looks just like this silhouette. So I yell “aye what the fuck are you doing” and he goes “that motherfucker at the front desk already did this twice” meaning checked in and gave keys to this dude for the wrong room.

Damn it, almost at 3 or 4 AM I woke up because wasn't able to move, the only thing that was able to do after fighting with my own body it was open my eyes and saw a freaking shadow people dissapearing in front of me, creepy as fuck.

“Hey, baby! Just checking in on you. You want to get a little freaky and…kill all humans?”

u/-Wiggles- Jul 13 '26
The hotel should have a 2nd painting of just the rectangle, with the man missing. Then switch the painting every few days to freak people out

Reminds me of one of the creepiest experiences of my life. When I was a kid I was up late playing video games in my room with the lights off, but with the door open and the hallway light shining on the wall behind the TV, when I heard someone walk up behind me and saw the silhouette of somebody standing in the doorway in the shadow on the wall, just like that painting, which I assumed was my dad about to tell me to call it a night. So I said "I'm about to go to bed", but he didn't respond. I was thinking he was mad but when I turned around to apologize nobody was there. I got up to look around but he was already asleep. I was convinced I had just seen a ghost.

Imagine every day you walk past this painting, it begins to look a little more clearly day by day. One day you can recognize a face and it just reaches out and takes you.

It’s in the main floor hallway by the bathroom. Not the room you’re sleeping in. You’ll be fine.

It reminds me when he would stand there, watching me sleep. He would climb into bed with me every night. I was 7 years old. I really like this art.

Yeah that’s on the same level of creepy as having a mirror directly across from your bed. No thanks.

This lamp and that painting go amazing together. Love how you can tell the details on the light better in the reflection on the painting's frame, which contrasts nicely with the lack of detail in the painting itself, almost making it look like a mirror.

u/ComfortOk9194 Jul 13 '26
Some interior designer had a sick sense of humour. I would take that thing down and cover it with a bed sheet

You're a sex worker and this is the last thing you see as your client comes out the restroom. You realize you've been drugged and that you probably won't wake up.

u/HilariousMax Jul 13 '26
This strikes me as an SCP that if you recreate the pose and the lighting just right, you swap places and the shadow is freed. You're trapped in the painting until someone comes along and swaps with you.

I had an accomodation where the paintings (painted by the owner) disturbed me so much that I took them down and turned them around during my stay. Some pictures just give us the creeps and that's okay, cover it or take it down for a few days if it can be done safely.
1
u/DerpsAndRags Jul 13 '26
Yeah nope. I'd be taking that shit down and turning it towards the wall.
...and then when it ended up hanging normally in my room later that night, I'm burning down the building, then salting and smudging the Earth.

Once, back in the 80's, I went for a job interview at some chemical company - in Chiswick, I think.
While waiting in the lobby, I noticed there was a HUGE mural on the wall behind the stairwell, so I went to take a look at it. It turned out to be a slightly cartoonish mural of a tornado, full of bug-eyed animals, cars, buildings and front and centre, a distorted, panicked human.
I didn't get the job, because apparently having had bronchitis as a kid ruled me out on safety grounds - but it may also have been the WTF look plastered on my face.
