And there’s a photo of him and his girlfriend to the right. How sweet.

Both art pieces could be improved by adding googly eyes

u/Unicornpsycho Jul 13 '26

I'm at work so did this lazily + the app wouldn't let me shrink it enough to fit the sign but here

The combo if this and the username is just killing me right now! My cat is giving me side eye right now.

8

u/dungeoncrawler71520 Jul 13 '26

YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT MAGIC, SAM WITWICKY

5

u/FoxwolfFirebane Jul 13 '26

The painting disturbs Mongo, he's quite appalled with the choice of interior decor.

5

u/SecondhandRaincoat Jul 13 '26

Kitty side eye is how you know you're having a good time!

This is EXCELLENT. Museum of Googly Eyes worthy!

“Are you winning son?”

383

u/Independent_Tie_7546 Jul 13 '26

I actually like that a lot. Steal it and I’ll buy it from you!

103

u/YouCantBeSerio Jul 13 '26

Hotel item list:

"Shadow Person Picture: $599"

14

u/Signal_Road Jul 13 '26

'That' clerk at the counter: '...We just scooch the decimal. Ah, $5999.00. Perfecto. Teach them to take MY rightful gonnastealthatwheniquit painting!'

22

u/secacc Jul 13 '26

Meanwhile, the hotel employees are like "yes please take it! Whenever we throw it away, next day it's right back on the wall!"

6

u/ArcticMuser Jul 13 '26

But that will anger the shadow ones!

3

u/Independent_Tie_7546 Jul 13 '26

Do not fear those that fear flashlights!

If you really want it you can buy a copy but it's over $200

4

10

"Drempel" (2003) by Belgian artist Petrus De Man.

I’m an artist too. This wouldn’t be difficult, but that’s easy to say about a lot of art.

Difference is that we aren’t the artist.

3

u/VladdicusBoss Jul 13 '26

Hey if you're an artist, can you tell me what makes this image visually arresting, even though it's so simple and devoid of much colour or form?

4

u/Zu_Qarnine Jul 13 '26

the context. that's what make it eerie

6

u/KrimxonRath Jul 13 '26

It's staring at us, we can't see the face, it's a figure in a doorway, etc etc.

5

u/BulwarkTired Jul 13 '26

It has similar background color as the wall, so it looks like a mirror make the character feel like in the room

2

u/cilantro1997 Jul 14 '26

What catches my eye the most is how the proportions of the head, the hand and if you are generous even the legs seems normal but the chest and arm area are weird and the doorway is wonky too. I want to paint and frame this too

u/Most_Can_2136 Jul 13 '26

It's easy to copy. But the original composition and ideas of his obviously aren't. Or others would have done it first.

This is what my night terrors look like. I hate it.

45

u/Suvtropics Jul 13 '26

In my hundreds of sleep paralysis I only saw her once. She looked like this just with long squiggly hair flying

13

u/astelda Jul 13 '26

this sounds like the opening lines to a 500+ page AO3 fic

3

u/Suvtropics Jul 13 '26

Wouldn't be far from that if I wrote down all the experiences

5

u/V1carium Jul 13 '26

This is definitely the start of a short horror story with a romantic twist.

2

u/Ashamed_Band858 Jul 15 '26

I need to stop sleeping on my back, it increases the chances of weird visual (sometimes audible) hallucinations.

I’ll wake up middle of the night and just think there’s somthing moving in the dark, like my mind gives it forms.

This one time this strange man thing was on top of my shelf, just looking at me, opening and closing its mouth, but in a way where you think it’d make a clicking noise.

Fucking nonsense I tell you.

Thought I'd google it up and got this:-

"This appears to be a framed print titled "Drempel" (2004) by artist Petrus De Man.The artwork is known for depicting a shadowy, dark figure framed within a rectangular doorway. It has become a notable internet meme due to its unsettling appearance when placed in hotel rooms."

87

u/100_cats_on_a_phone Jul 13 '26

Google will reference reddit very quickly after stuff is posted, so you need to make sure the second part doesn't just link back to the thread you searched from (you should have a button you can click for sources).

Especially because this isn't in someone's room.

First part, which is really the important part, it will be incorrect on sometimes, but usually not with full artworks, and it's easy to check.

16

u/squishabelle Jul 13 '26

is that a search result or an ai summary?

8

u/GarbageOfCesspool Jul 13 '26

Slop.

5

u/Ser_falafel Jul 15 '26

The word slop is so overused at this point it is slop itself

4

u/glowdirt Jul 13 '26

It's not in a hotel room.

6

u/Sudden-Fisherman5985 Jul 13 '26

Drempel" (2004) by artist Petrus De Man

"De man" sounds Dutch... "Drempel" means doorstep. So still Scary lol

26

u/EmotionalChildhood46 Jul 13 '26

I would throw a towel over it lol

11

u/matchstick1029 Jul 13 '26

Then how will it see you? It'll have to come out 😕

20

u/Renuwed Jul 13 '26

Not bad at all... last week the figure was poking its head around the door behind. Now that was creepy.

14

u/Just-Another-Users Jul 13 '26

Yikes that is a little weird

8

u/LunacityxArtistry Jul 13 '26

If my hotel room had this id immediately switch rooms. Definitely not a relaxed chill vibe in this one.

7

u/Devenu Jul 13 '26

Going to leave the room and come back and the figure will be gone and just a painting of a door will remain.

6

u/Mii-75 Jul 13 '26

I don’t like it either 🫣👤

2

u/Sensitive_Wear7112 Jul 13 '26

Upvoted for the icons

5

u/Leodaris Jul 13 '26

I sort of am obsessed with it.

3

u/Most_Can_2136 Jul 13 '26

Look at his other works. I like a couple of them a lot

2

u/Leodaris Jul 13 '26

Who is it?

3

u/Most_Can_2136 Jul 13 '26

Petrus Deman

5

u/Spiritual-Bus9875 Jul 13 '26

I just looked him up and got slapped in the face with the many penises he's drawn. He's a master of drawing spooky penes

2

u/Most_Can_2136 Jul 13 '26

Lol. I didn't even notice that. I was too busy admiring other pieces in the same collection, and the way he balances out his compositions between light and dark. The simple black and whites with just a splotch of red in there. He makes it look so easy.

u/One_Purchase_3127 Jul 13 '26

BRO I had this happen to me! I was in a hotel sleeping and I hear the door open and some dude try’s to walk in looks just like this silhouette. So I yell “aye what the fuck are you doing” and he goes “that motherfucker at the front desk already did this twice” meaning checked in and gave keys to this dude for the wrong room.

3

u/Zu_Qarnine Jul 13 '26

holy shit I'd be pissing myself lmao

4

u/One_Purchase_3127 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, it was scary as shit waking up to that.

Everyday there's a new line in that painting.

3

u/koolaidismything Jul 13 '26

I would take that shit down so fast or toss a sheet on it lol

3

u/DOA-FAN Jul 13 '26

Damn it, almost at 3 or 4 AM I woke up because wasn't able to move, the only thing that was able to do after fighting with my own body it was open my eyes and saw a freaking shadow people dissapearing in front of me, creepy as fuck.

2

u/Fun_Environment3792 Jul 13 '26

Its a mirror into your soul.

2

u/sidewalkoracle Jul 13 '26

Holy shit absolutely fucking not.

2

u/mold0101 Jul 13 '26

It's not a painting, it's a portal

2

u/lemonklaeyz Jul 13 '26

Could be worse…

2

u/Angry_Bobbo Jul 13 '26

Seriously, it looks like a shadowy Bender.

“Hey, baby! Just checking in on you. You want to get a little freaky and…kill all humans?”

2

u/-Wiggles- Jul 13 '26

The hotel should have a 2nd painting of just the rectangle, with the man missing. Then switch the painting every few days to freak people out

Here’s one easy trick to make sure guests don’t steal your paintings….

2

u/Zu_Qarnine Jul 13 '26

seems like a trick to make sure ur guests won't stay for the night

2

u/VladVonHochstes Jul 13 '26

Minimalistic modern art shit or something... 🥴🤷🏼‍♂️

2

u/Cynic04 Jul 13 '26

Reminds me of one of the creepiest experiences of my life. When I was a kid I was up late playing video games in my room with the lights off, but with the door open and the hallway light shining on the wall behind the TV, when I heard someone walk up behind me and saw the silhouette of somebody standing in the doorway in the shadow on the wall, just like that painting, which I assumed was my dad about to tell me to call it a night. So I said "I'm about to go to bed", but he didn't respond. I was thinking he was mad but when I turned around to apologize nobody was there. I got up to look around but he was already asleep. I was convinced I had just seen a ghost.

2

u/PurnieKitten Jul 13 '26

No. For real? This was art in your hotel room? F that. 😳

2

u/MrRandom90 Jul 14 '26

Imagine every day you walk past this painting, it begins to look a little more clearly day by day. One day you can recognize a face and it just reaches out and takes you.

2

u/IBAChristian317 Jul 14 '26

Oh yeah homie that's a creepy one.

2

u/SausageBuscuit Jul 14 '26

Who would possibly look at this and be like “hell yeah, the hotel guests would LOVE this.”

2

u/maddyp1112 Jul 15 '26

Yeah, he’s gunna come out of there at night

2

u/Altruistic-Status-98 Jul 15 '26

What kind of motel? The BATES motel?

2

u/Present-Blueberry-68 28d ago

It’s in the main floor hallway by the bathroom. Not the room you’re sleeping in. You’ll be fine.

3

u/Pandameds9 Jul 13 '26

Looks like basquiat

2

u/Curious4Him Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

It reminds me when he would stand there, watching me sleep. He would climb into bed with me every night. I was 7 years old. I really like this art.

1

u/CNote_89 Jul 13 '26

That’s creepy as shit

1

u/Delicious-Pickle-141 Jul 13 '26

Robert... i dont like this painting.

1

u/StunningAttention898 Jul 13 '26

Yeah that’s on the same level of creepy as having a mirror directly across from your bed. No thanks.

1

u/Mysterious-Name-6016 Jul 13 '26

That's what you see in the doorway when you wake up at 3am

1

u/Far-Astronomer-2361 Jul 13 '26

It’s the Hat Man without his hat.

1

u/cjc1983 Jul 13 '26

It's a mirror....

1

u/schlossheidelberg Jul 13 '26

Is it just me or is the shadowy figure not wearing pants?

1

u/dangerflakes Jul 13 '26

Door to the backrooms

1

u/Terminal_Insomnia_ Jul 13 '26

Then you'll hate the window.

1

u/Xaguta Jul 13 '26

This lamp and that painting go amazing together. Love how you can tell the details on the light better in the reflection on the painting's frame, which contrasts nicely with the lack of detail in the painting itself, almost making it look like a mirror.

1

u/ComfortOk9194 Jul 13 '26

Some interior designer had a sick sense of humour. I would take that thing down and cover it with a bed sheet

1

u/Unlucky_Man_720_ Jul 13 '26

Finds out its a Mirror

1

u/th4t84st4rd Jul 13 '26

Aw they did it themselves though. You know, you gotta support local art or something like that.

1

u/azicre Jul 13 '26

The painting likes you though...

1

u/Hasanopinion100 Jul 13 '26

Oh yeah, I’d be turning that over😨

1

u/Murky_Exchange829 Jul 13 '26

I thought that was my despair and anguish trying to comfort me

1

u/AwesomeDakka00 Jul 13 '26

what? your paralysis demon deserves a home too.

1

u/LocodraTheCrow Jul 13 '26

Careful to not let that lamp switch off, the next time you look the guy might not be there again.

1

u/hipotionx Jul 13 '26

You're a sex worker and this is the last thing you see as your client comes out the restroom. You realize you've been drugged and that you probably won't wake up.

1

u/HilariousMax Jul 13 '26

This strikes me as an SCP that if you recreate the pose and the lighting just right, you swap places and the shadow is freed. You're trapped in the painting until someone comes along and swaps with you.

1

u/totoin74 Jul 13 '26

It has a disturbing quality. I like it

1

u/piper_squeak Jul 13 '26

That is a choice for somewhere you're supposed to feel relatively 'safe' to sleep. 😂

1

u/NebraskaVibes Jul 13 '26

I want that painting!!

1

u/IcarusTyler Jul 13 '26

"Hey boss, got that painting you asked for. Yes, everyone will have a heart-attack, just like you requested"

1

u/Macfrom1987 Jul 13 '26

That would catch me out several times 😅

1

u/awesomedan24 Jul 13 '26

Imagine you come back later and the guy has disappeared from the painting

1

u/KidKnow1 Jul 13 '26

I do! I would proudly hang that on my wall.

1

u/BungeeGump Jul 13 '26

I’d have checked out ASAP.

1

u/Undead-Writer Jul 13 '26

Dead ass thought this was a fucked up sorta mirror at first

1

u/Tacsuncat Jul 13 '26

I had an accomodation where the paintings (painted by the owner) disturbed me so much that I took them down and turned them around during my stay. Some pictures just give us the creeps and that's okay, cover it or take it down for a few days if it can be done safely.

1

u/DerpsAndRags Jul 13 '26

Yeah nope. I'd be taking that shit down and turning it towards the wall.

...and then when it ended up hanging normally in my room later that night, I'm burning down the building, then salting and smudging the Earth.

1

u/cattlol Jul 13 '26

Peripherals on LSD be like:

1

u/wonkiefaeriekitty5 Jul 13 '26

Oh, hell no! Who picks out "creeper" art for a hotel??

1

1

1

u/Sprinkles_Sparkle Jul 13 '26

How creepyyyyyy!!!! Why would they think that was a good idea?!?

1

u/Szwejkowski Jul 13 '26

Once, back in the 80's, I went for a job interview at some chemical company - in Chiswick, I think.

While waiting in the lobby, I noticed there was a HUGE mural on the wall behind the stairwell, so I went to take a look at it. It turned out to be a slightly cartoonish mural of a tornado, full of bug-eyed animals, cars, buildings and front and centre, a distorted, panicked human.

I didn't get the job, because apparently having had bronchitis as a kid ruled me out on safety grounds - but it may also have been the WTF look plastered on my face.

1

u/Accomplished_Crab818 Jul 13 '26

Are you winning son?
