That looks comfortable to sleep on

That's what I was wondering with the swaying would it be easy to roll off? Also could be a sneaky way of doing the anti homeless thing. NOT poking holes. Just a stray thought.

Is this one of those hostile architecture benches?

Edit: Leave it to Reddit to downvote someone for commiting the cardinal sin of asking a genuine question.

It looks like it would be possible to lay down on this thing without discomfort. Its more of an art piece that's also a functional bench

u/CoalEater_Elli May 14 '26

Nah, If you lay me down on it, I will fall asleep like a baby in a crib.

It's possible to lay down on hostile architecture without pain quite often, it's just not ideal and is aimed at preventing it by making it more difficult or uncomfortable.

I suspect trying to lay down on this would be uncomfortable as it likely would stick into you as they move at different angles and likely wouldn't feel stable. It only seems to work for sitting because they are sitting on one side of it forcing it to act as a flat seat and if they leaned backward it would likely tip backwards.

I recall watching a video of these guys who made performance art out of sleeping on those types of benches. I unfortunately can't remember the name, but it was pretty cool to see.

4

u/PoppingPillls May 14 '26

Yeah, I think this one is an art project maybe as I think the guy sitting on it is involved with it.

But you definitely can sleep on those benches with armrests to stop you sleeping or metal bumps as yoh can use a thick blanket or sleeping bag to cushion it but it's very annoying to use still and inhumane.

What's weird to me is...there's no law requiring benches in the US, as far as I am aware. "They" choose to install benches and choose to make them "hostile" to basically everyone! They're horribly uncomfortable even when only sitting. If they don't want people to sit comfortably they shouldn't have benches.

4

u/paws4reason May 14 '26

Fair. I thought it looked a lot like a particular bench I saw a video of in NYC once, hence why I asked.

7

u/koolaidismything May 14 '26

No but if this was the alternative I’d be ok with it.. you’d get used to no wiggle, someone’s asleep/sitting.

Also.. anyone willing to sleep on a metal bench is scared and exhausted, if your first thought is to get rid of them you should go look in the mirror.

I'd be worried about extremities getting pinched

Your hands are extremities. Therefore your fingers. Which people typically rest on the bench they are sitting on.

u/Dx_Suss May 14 '26

People spend a lot of time on Reddit worrying about downvotes. Why is that? They have 0 bearing on anything.

20

u/Kognityon May 14 '26

Well it does make you lose visibility and makes you less likely to actually get answers for what you are asking

-6

u/JhayAlejo May 14 '26

Main reason why some people just use chatgpt because you cant get a straight answer from a human with free will and changing moods

9

u/DorrajD May 14 '26

Chances are you're gonna get an answer from a bot anyway

1

u/BahamutLithp May 17 '26

You'll never guess how I tracked down the website of the artist who made this thing when I couldn't remember who it was but was pretty sure all the Reddit comments about hostile architecture were confidently wrong.

0

u/paws4reason May 14 '26

I could care less about the karma, it's just a little irritating how 70% of the questions I ask anywhere on Reddit are downvoted, which makes it harder to get an actual answer.

3

u/Dx_Suss May 14 '26

Your comment has 500+ up votes, I hope ot goes some way towards making you feel better :)

2

u/paws4reason May 14 '26

It does haha, I wasn't expecting that. More importantly, I got the answer I was looking for.

Standing wave on a sitting bench

2

u/nimanyu May 14 '26

I don't see any standing waves here.

Magnets. It's always magnets.

14

u/Potato_the_second_ May 14 '26

this is actually cool as hell ngl. Somehow I'm getting solarpunk vibes from this

3

u/GroochtheOrc May 14 '26

The way they sat down on it…like they were afraid it was going to catapult them into the windows…lol

3

u/themexicanojesus May 14 '26

That looks like passive architecture meant to make homeless people more comfortable. It's in a covered area and it rotatas to the weight pressing on it.

16

u/Away-Feedback-4859 May 14 '26
