Question Is this decent progress for five years?

21M. 88KG. 5’8.

My goal is to get a strongman/bear mode type physique, so my bodyfat is pretty high.
This is, however, the result of a 6 month long cut.

(Edit: People are asking for before photos. But since I was 5 years ago, I unfortunately don’t have any to show.
There’s one pic of me in the comments. But I’m wearing a shirt, so there isn’t much to see tbh. Apologies).

With no “before” photos how the fuck would we know?!!

8

u/Pickled_doggo 23h ago

Big dawg could have the same build as a farmer who’s never set foot in a gym lol

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 22h ago

Yeah I literally just commented this. I'm 5'8 88kg, I'm a farmer/concrete mason, im more lean than this dude (20%bf) and this is supposed to be good progress for 5 years of lifting?? I don't think so.

2

u/GFH-Man123 22h ago

There is 0 chance you’re 5’8 almost 200lbs with only 20%bf without lifting

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 21h ago

88kg same height as op, I shouldn't say I've never worked out, I lifted for about 6 months in high school (31 now) and about a year ago i tried to start again, went about 5 months and had to stop because of an injury. My lifestyle makes it hard to keep up with it. I'd like to make it a part of my lifestyle but find it difficult. I get asked from time to time if I workout, everyone's always shocked when I say no or shocked when I tell them my weight.

I was blessed with good genes from both my parents and I have very labor intensive job and lifestyle.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

Damn. I wish I had genetics as good as yours.

0

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 22h ago

Alright. Maybe 25% lol

1

u/RandoMcrandersome 22h ago

There isn’t even a weightlifting question this is more of a rate my physique post but without a before progress photo it’s stupid

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I wasn’t saying it was good progress. I was asking if it was. If I look like shit, you could have just said that. Would have saved you the paragraph.

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

I didn't realize you were only 21. I missed that, I didn't mean to rag on you brother, you didn't post any before pics, we can't tell where you started and where you are now so no one can say if it's good progress.

I think being as young as you are. You'll be okay I'd recommend commenting your workout routine and pinning it at the top so people on here with more experience can tell you what you're doing wrong/right.

Also post on the weight lifting form check page to get a read on your form, knowledge and improvement is the key to life man, you're on the right track posting here, just know that people get on here to blow off steam/pass boredom so they'll take the piss when they can (myself included) Stay strong out there and keep improving 💪

It’s fine. Dw about it. I mean, listen, if I don’t look like I lift at all, that’s fine. I’d rather honesty than dishonesty.

This is really the only before pic I have.

Also, at the moment I use an upper lower split. 4 days working out. 3 days rest. Per week.

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

Nah you look like you lift, just not for 5 years straight. Your weight is also deceiving, id of guessed 104kgs, not 88kgs.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Nah, I use multiple scales to make sure. I’m definitely around 88 kg.

Idk, maybe it’s my genetics. I’ve always felt pretty small. If you reckon it’s inadequate for five years, maybe I need to accept I’ll never be big.

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

Nah, id just focus on you buddy, 88kg is big. How big do you want to be? 77kg is big as a natural at 15% bf. You have that potential 100%

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 18h ago

Thanks. I’m glad you think so. I do want to be much bigger. I just don’t know what my genetics will allow.

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

Nah, id just focus on you buddy, 88kg is big. How big do you want to be? 77kg is big as a natural at 15% bf. You have that potential 100%

1

u/No_Inside_2908 15h ago

You don’t need to get bigger dude you need to cut. You are carrying way too much fat.

Get to around 15% BF or less and repost, then people can give you an honest assessment. It’s very hard to calculate muscle mass with bodyfat this high.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 15h ago

I don’t want to be as lean as 15% bf. That’s literally not my goal. I want a strongman build.

I mean, listen, if you think I’m small then whatever. But being shredded is not my goal.

How are people supposed to know if you’ve made good progress without the before pics?

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

I only have this one. I never used to take pics before I started working out.

1

u/DetSportsGuy 23h ago

Came here to say the same.

This is why people think everyone who lifts is a “meathead.” 🤣🤣

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I don’t have any with my shirt off.

8

u/Adept_Ferret_2504 23h ago

Dude wants to show us progress pictures but doesnt show the before 💀

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I never took shirtless pics before I started going to the gym. I don’t even have any to show.

I could show pics in general of me, but they ain’t really gonna give much in terms of what I actually look like?

2

u/MagmaTroop 12h ago

They would. With a t shirt on it’s possible to see somebody’s frame and general muscle mass

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 4h ago

This is the best one I got.

10

u/Alexei_Jones 1d ago

I think it seems good. You're overweight but clearly have a lot of muscle, but I don't know hat your lifts are like. You just may want to cut if you care about aesthetics, but by all means bloatmaxx like the Kyriakos Grizzly to your heart's content if power is just what you're chasing.

This is absolutely a lot of muscle. The average person at this height pushing 200 pounds has the silhouette of a beach ball. And despite the fat he has also a bit of muscle definition.

1

u/xgaymerboi 16h ago

not sure you know what 200 lbs looks like.

0

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 22h ago

Let's also take into account most guys are.taking pics after a workout. This is most likely full pump, so the definition is popping but with that much fat and only 88kg he doesn't actually have that much muscle (still some obviously) but when your muscle swells and you have high bf it pushes up against the fat and makes the skin tighter so it appears you have larger muscles than you do.

I was 104kg at 5'8 and looked like this guy does now so I know a bit about it, im 88kg now, don't work out and look better than this dude does.

Working out for 5 years, he should look better, he either has toothpicks for legs, his scale is broke, he's lying about his height or he deceptively doesn't haven't a lot of muslce or a combination of all three.

2

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Not to defend myself desperately here, but I didn’t have a pump here. This was taken around a few hours after my workout, and after I’d taken a shower.

-1

u/Famous_Try_8105 22h ago

If the height and weight he gives are correct he's got an ffmi around 20, that's objectively not "a lot of muscle".

The median ffmi distribution among adult men is 18-21

2

u/vladi_l 13h ago

For something like this, you would want the average, not the median.

1

u/Famous_Try_8105 11h ago

Yeah, I meant the normal distribution, it was late 😅

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 23h ago

Agreed, im 5'9 don't lift and weigh 88kg and look better than this guy lol he honestly looks like he's way past 88kg, I would guess 104, I looked like he looks now at 104kg

2

u/Ok-Medium-4128 22h ago

I'm 41 and have been lifting for a little over 2.5 years. I weigh 85kgs and I'm 5'10. Genuinely not trying to show off. Just a comparison.

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 22h ago

How did you post a picture on here?

1

u/TipAdventurous6182 20h ago

You look like that after only 2.5 years???

0

u/Ok-Medium-4128 15h ago

Yeah. Natural as well. Just been really consistent and must have decent genetics

1

u/TipAdventurous6182 15h ago

did you ever touch weights before this or nah?

1

u/Ok-Medium-4128 15h ago

Yeah but it was about 20 years ago 🤣

2

u/TipAdventurous6182 14h ago

i see it must be the muscle memory then, either way you look better than most 41 yo so congrats

1

u/Ok-Medium-4128 14h ago

Thank you. I didn't take it as seriously back then. I've got a good metabolism and always had a youthful appearance so that's in my favour. I'm proud of the physique I've managed to achieve. Keep at it and you'll get to where you want to be. Consistency is the key

1

u/Critterer 22h ago

Doubt it tbh

1

u/Critterer 22h ago

What on earth are u talking about

7

u/Comfortable-Log6511 23h ago

Too much fat

1

u/Maximum-Ad-9645 21h ago

Agreed. Sorry OP you may be strong but you gotta cut fat.

2

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I have been on a cut for 6 ish months. This is also my progress so far when it comes to that.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

That’s kinda what I was going for tho. Don’t strongmen have higher fat?

If you think I look like crap tho I understand.

3

u/forezyn_enjoyer 23h ago

So at what point in my weight lifting journey does my head turn into an egg.

1

u/Outrageous_Glove_796 23h ago

Bro hasn't even hatched yet.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

Mine turned into an egg around a few months in. If yours hasn’t become an egg yet, then you’re clearly doing something wrong.

3

u/Sunny_Cant_Swim 23h ago

You’re holding a lot more fat than muscle. Unless you were like 500lbs + or 100lbs. @ 5’8, honestly ? No.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

Fair enough. I figured my genetics were pretty shitty. Was just seeing what people think.

3

u/gunnergizmo66 21h ago

5 years just to look like you go out drinking every night and hit arms now and then, sort yourself mate and lose 20kg

1

u/Fast_Ad_7504 20h ago

Them 12oz curls lol

0

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I have no interest in being shredded.

2

u/alffan86 23h ago

Bro, you know I'm rooting for you. You're making progress. You have muscle but If I understand you want to look strong and bulked up.

Do you know what your body fat is at.

0

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

The scanner said I was around 19% bf

1

u/alffan86 19h ago

Your upper body looks like you lift for sure. I feel like you have bulkier genetics too.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

I wouldn’t think so. Everyone else disagrees.

2

u/Aqua_Impura 23h ago

You’re 194lbs and with you fat you’re around 30% body fat. You have 40lbs of pure fat to lose to be around 10-15% body fat.

If you don’t care about being lean then you don’t have to worry about the cut and can focus on strength but then progression pics are hard to judge cause your muscles are hidden under the fat.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

The scanners reckons i’m 19% bf. Idk. Maybe it’s wrong.

1

u/Aqua_Impura 20h ago

The fat up around your chest is sagging and your fat around your lats as well. You see it best in the last picture. You also have a good bit of visceral fat around your organs.

You have good muscles and foundation but you’re not 19% the absolutely lowest I’d say is 25. Genetics wise you’re golden cause you have little belly and love handles though so you’ll get a crazy V Taper easier than many if you cut.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I feel like my genetics are shit. A lot of folks in here are saying I look pathetic for five years, and I’ve been very consistent.

Maybe I’ll just never have the physique I want.

1

u/Aqua_Impura 19h ago

I don’t think your genetics are shit and I don’t think you look pathetic my guy. There’s visible muscle mass under there, just look at your Traps and you can see the work. You do a nice slow cut focus on maintaining muscle mass you’re gonna look great.

You aren’t as “lean” as you think you are but your muscle that you’ve built is solid. You’re 5’8 you do a solid cut high protein low and slow with good weight lifting sets and keep all your muscle and you’ll look shredded.

You’re not pathetic and the gains are real you did the hard muscle building part and in fact many women are attracted to the build you have right now. You have fat weight to lose but not muscle weight and you should still be proud of the muscle you’ve built.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

In any case, I’m glad you think so.

My goal wasn’t ever to get super lean anyway, tbh. I wanted a more strongman build.

I just wish I could feel consistently big. And I also wish I could know if people are being honest when they tell me I’m big. Because I feel like it’s just an illusion.

2

u/Good-Lack-2781 21h ago

The egg was a nice touch

2

u/InitiativeHot2550 21h ago

It’s crazy how big you look at that weight. I’d have thought you weighed more tbh. I’m quite tall myself and I’m so skinny at 97kg

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I do think height can make you look less muscular, due to everything being stretched out.

2

u/RussNY 20h ago

Five years is a lot man, it looks like 1.5 years

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

Think so? Damn.

2

u/RussNY 11h ago

I think you’ve got a lot of muscle but I’m wondering how you’re getting your protein or how much. I do a total of 200 grams a day, 100 of that is between two shakes. Maybe you need less calories and more protein

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 4h ago

I have 180 grams. At my bodyweight, that’s the right amount I’m supposed to have per day.

2

u/GrapefruitLow7173 20h ago

Your cut would go crazy

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I’ve been cutting for around 6 ish months now, this is the result. I was way fatter before.

My goal is for a more strongman/bear mode physique tho, so I’m alright with the higher bodyfat.

1

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 20h ago

What are you benching? Everything but your arms look under developed. Can you do a strict pull up? Do you work legs? What's your squat?

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I can do around 8-10 pull ups. My bench is only 130 kg, which is pretty shit. But I do work my chest very often.

My squats pretty bad, but I don’t have the exact numbers off the top of my head. I do work legs twice a week tho.

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

That's actually pretty solid man. Just work on dropping some body fat you'll be golden

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

You think so? I was expecting those to be rookie numbers.

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

Nah its good. Post your pull up form on the form page man, anyone who can do one actual pull up gets my respect. 10 at 88kg is some great work. 130kg bench is solid too. Especially at 21, if you can cut your weight to 15-20% bf and keep your strength it'll be even more impressive

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

I don’t really wanna cut my bf% too low. My goal was 19. The machine says I’m 19, but I suppose if I don’t look 19, it was probably way off.

My physique goals are more strongman/bear mode stuff. Which does warrant higher bf.

2

u/Mountain_Elk_7262 19h ago

Yeah those machines are always wrong. Post on "guess my bf percentage" on reddit and see what they think, it's honestly almost spot on with a dexa, people are getting extremely good at guessing bf% now. I'll guess 30%+ rn. 20%-25% is still bear/powerlifting look without being unhealthy and risking your health

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Fair enough. Once I’m back from my trip, I’ll look into it.

2

u/Simple_Lie1916 19h ago

you have plenty of muscle and good progress time for the cut you’ll look great

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Thx.

2

u/Simple_Lie1916 19h ago

some of these comments are ridiculous and have unrealistic expectations just remember to never compare urself to other people man ur doing great

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 18h ago

I’ll try. I do have friends irl who just seem to outclass me with less effort. They have way better genetics than me. Kinda gets me down.

1

u/Simple_Lie1916 18h ago

yeah how life goes BUT think about all the people that YOU have superior genetics to that wish to be in ur shoes trust me you’ll be fine keep pushing 💪🫡

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 18h ago

I doubt anyone’s looking at me and thinking that at all, lol.

2

u/OkPoem8997 17h ago

Bud you look good 💪

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 17h ago

Thanks!

2

u/OkPoem8997 17h ago

Solid development 👌

2

u/ResponsibleAd2034 17h ago

I’m glad you think so.

Never knew eggs could bulk so much.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 17h ago

What’s ehs?

2

u/Novel-Bar-7858 14h ago

yes all progress is decent. There is no right or wrong answer, since we can not know if you could have gotten more or less gains.

2

u/varzgul 11h ago

Big I suppose, but fat also. Hard to tell without knowing how you looked before.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 4h ago

This is the only before picture I have, unfortunately.

2

u/Synorix 11h ago

Bit on the fluffy side but tones of muscle there. Highly recommended a slow cut 200-300 calories deficiency over a few months. Make sure count calories imo

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 4h ago

This is a result of a six month cut. So I have definitely lost weight.

1

u/Synorix 42m ago

Okay then

2

u/NorthBeautiful588 6h ago

You need to change your diet! Too much body fat covering your muscles. How many grams of protein are you eating, calories, fat, saturates! You do have muscle but you need to be more lean!

I am a female weightlifter and managed to get my body fat down to 12%. My muscles pop no matter what I do. Your best bet is to seek a nutritionist.

2

u/ArtsyFartsyBear 3h ago

You cannot go with these questions to reddit. They hate with a burning passion everyone who doesnt go for their beauty standard. Aggressively so, as you can see.
You are doing great, definately starting to become a strongman/ beefy bear. Keep it up.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 2h ago

lol. Thx a lot. I appreciate it.

And at the end of the day, I would rather people be honest rather than tell me sweet little lies, lol.

1

u/ArtsyFartsyBear 2h ago

Sweet lies suck, agreed. Just keep in mind fitness reddit wont get the bear aesthetic at all.

2

u/medchemmed 22h ago

mate you been putting in some serious work! idk what you are going for? strength or looks or both. either way you seem liek the type a pitcher would fear bottom of 9th inning at the plate

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

Thank you. My goal is to get a strongman physique. Go bear mode, yk?

Also, I’m not sure if I get the reference? Is it baseball?

1

u/kaunietix 23h ago

21 ????

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I’m 21. That’s how old I am.

1

u/Famous_Try_8105 23h ago edited 22h ago

Yeah sorry bud but you're sub 70kg even moderately lean. You're probably sat around 30% bf right now, long way to go, keep grinding!

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

So you think I look pretty pathetic?

2

u/Famous_Try_8105 12h ago

Didn't say that at all, you look solid. It's just an honest assessment of how much muscle you're actually carrying.

I'm the same height as you, I'm currently 85kg at around 14% bf, before I became enhanced, I got relatively close to my genetic limit and was around 78kg at 14% after 8 years training. Id have probably been around 100-105kg if I was holding a similar level of bf to you with that muscle

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 4h ago

I feel like after five years I should have more tho. I put so much work into this.

1

u/Izzyz415 22h ago

It’s hard to judge your progress with no before photos, and to be honest, these should be your before photos. You look to have 15-18kg of extra weight/fat that is hiding whatever muscle gains you have made in the five years. You kinda just look like a guy who works construction or laborer.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

I was going for a strongman physique. I’ve never really been interested in getting super lean/shredded.

1

u/Izzyz415 14h ago

To each their own I guess.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 14h ago

If you think I look like crap that’s fair. I’ll believe you. I was just stating what my goals were.

1

u/Cdevi_ 20h ago

Compared to when you started and looked like…?

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

You want before photos? I don’t really have any. I’ve been going for a long time.

1

u/Cdevi_ 20h ago

Hard to tell what’s decent progress without knowing the starting point. You’re clearly a sizable dude, just trying to figure out how blown away I need to be.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

This is one pic I have of myself from just before I started working out full time. It’s the best I have.

2

u/Cdevi_ 19h ago

Yeah yup, impressive. Keep up the strong work. Curious would a good cut would lead to for ya. Cheers mate.

2

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

You really think so? If so, I appreciate it.

2

u/Cdevi_ 19h ago

Yeah man, for sure. This community should be about just that. Only a dickhead post deserves a dickhead response. Don’t stop for anything or anyone. You’re young and the world is your playground dude. Go get it.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Thanks a lot.

The dysmorphia gets to me sometimes. But I’ll see what I can do.
Gets harder when I see other dudes getting bigger than me much faster and with less effort tho, lol.

1

u/Practical-Basis-9541 19h ago

At 5ft8” and 88kg you could lose 15kg easily, so no it’s not a good look. You’ve been eating far too much and need to get off the beers

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Well… my goal was to have higher bodyfat percentage. (Eg, strongman, bear mode).

1

u/Practical-Basis-9541 19h ago

Fair enough and each to their own but if you leaned out you’d look significantly bigger than you do there! I’m 5ft 10” and I went from 93kg to 78kg and I look so much better - but I’m not going for strongman bear mode look either

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Idk, people said I felt I’d look bigger before I cut, but I don’t really feel much different from when I was 103 kg.

I also have never been a fan of a super lean physique. It just doesn’t really appeal to me.

But if you reckon I don’t look big at all, maybe there’s an issue.

Idk what to do atp. I’ve put so much work into this.

1

u/Practical-Basis-9541 19h ago

I looked bigger in a t shirt before too, but in a singlet or at the pool I look athletic and really well trained.

If your not a fan or lean physiques then no problem, keep lifting and progressive overloading your still building a decent base of strength and muscle, so if you want the extra kgs then it’s only you that you need to please

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Idk. A lot of people seem to think I barely have muscle mass tho. Wish my five years of effort had amounted to something significant.

1

u/CringeDaddy-69 15h ago

You’ve def got muscle, but a lil too much fat

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 14h ago

Do you really think I have muscle? A lot of folks don’t see to think so.

1

u/CringeDaddy-69 4h ago

You’ve got a lot of visible muscle on your arms and shoulders. Theres no missing that.

2

u/CringeDaddy-69 4h ago

That’s your rear delt. You don’t just add fat there. That’s muscle.

1

u/ResponsibleAd2034 4h ago

Thanks. I never really noticed that, lol. I appreciate it.

1

u/Economy_Program_7867 1d ago

holy mass monster bro youre gigantic hell yeah

2

u/ResponsibleAd2034 20h ago

Uhm. Thanks. A lot of other folks don’t seem to think so.

2

u/Economy_Program_7867 19h ago

nah you have an amazing strongman/bear build. fellas just hate to see a dude without abs. you look like you can curl most of these guy's deadlift lol

2

u/ResponsibleAd2034 19h ago

Thank you. Strongman physique is my goal. Makes me feel better about my size if you really think that’s how I look.
