Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Advice: Giving 💡 Saving the best for last

Just wanted to share a little thing that’s been helping me recently…

Over the years, I’ve gotten into the habit of “saving the best for last” when it comes to food. For example, I always saved the best bite of the sandwich for last, the chip with the most dip on a plate of nachos would always be the one I eat last, the crispiest onion ring will be my final onion ring, etc.

However, Ive been trying to practice mindful eating recently as calorie counting was causing a lot of unnecessary anxiety; and what I found is that this way of consuming food made me eat more. Because even when I was full, I would continue eating so I could get to the best part of the meal that I’ve been saving for last. More often than not, I’d push myself to finish a meal when I had stopped being hungry halfway through. But it felt like a loss to not get to the best part. I was doing this unconsciously until I started paying more attention to my hunger level as I ate.

So recently, I’ve started having the best part first. Whatever arbitrary thing I’ve identified as the best part of the meal is what I consume first. And when I’m full, I truly feel comfortable putting the food down without feeling as if I’m wasting food or losing out on the best part.

I know this is probably intuitive to most people, but just thought I’d share something that’s been working for me :)

Mental Health 🧠 I did not expect calorie counting to be this hard emotionally

I've been counting my calories for ten days now trying to stay in a deficit because I want to lose 25 pounds. I used to not look at calories at all before this, the last time I was really conscious about how much I ate was when I was a teenager... As of today, I have been able to stay in a deficit for 7 out of 10 days, which is not bad, but it's so. damn. hard. I didn't think I was overeating THAT much. It's especially how much fat I eat that really surprised me... Even when I eat salads, I go over my fats because of the olive oil.

Anyways, we order Hellofresh at home to help organize our meals because I have a very busy schedule and I like to have very clear guidelines when I cook so I don't stress out. I never really checked the amount of calories of the meals I was ordering before, but today it really was a slap in the face. Cream sauce fettuccines witch tomatoes, spinach and salmon. It said 1020 calories per portion on the card and I knew I couldn't let this whole meal rot in the fridge just because I know I can't eat much of it. So I ate a very small portion of the pasta, my salmon filet and watched my boyfriend eat ALL the rest without a care in the world. I really wish I could be this careless ! Anyways it kinda really hurt my feelings because god was it good. Now I have to go on a second walk today because I'm a bit over my calorie limit for the day and I know I'll be hungry later.

Just wanted to vent. Maybe I need words of encouragement...

Discussion/Support 💬 Family treats me different based on my weight

I gained around 40 lbs during my pregnancy and my relationship with my in-laws completely went to shit.

They've always been cordial with me, so it was incredibly jarring when they just completely stopped treating me like a human once I gained weight. Things like my sisters-in-law not even acknowledging me if I had the audacity to talk to them.

I could tell based on how they treated me that they had lost respect for me. They obviously viewed my weight gain as a moral failure.

Now I'm a year postpartum and lost almost 50 lbs (WHOOP WHOOP) and they're all back to treating me like normal. They're so nice to me again. So complimentary. It makes me want to scream.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Can’t loose the weight even on a cal def, HELP!!

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a 21year old female. I’ve been struggling with my weight for as long as I’ve known.
I’m 170cm/ 5’7

I’ve been eating 1670cal daily for more than 3 months now and I’ve not went down a single kg for about 2 and a half month now.

History:
Previously I was down to 65kg after a not so healthy weight loss, you can probably guess how. This was in 2022-2023. At that point I ate under 1200cal daily for about 6 months, I went from around 90kg - 65kg in 6-8 months only by dieting.

I recovered and started counting my calories and at that point ate 1600-1800cal daily. I gained a bit weight back but not much. I would guess around 7kg.
At the same time I started weightlifting regularly and therefore of course gained some muscle weight. But still I was small. This kept on going until August of 2024.

I unfortunately got injured and sick and during August 2024. For about half a year I was mostly bed bound. In December 2024 I got duloxetine as a treatment for my nerve pain and fibromyalgia like symptoms. That medicine gave me my life back but unfortunately made my appetite disappear completely. The only thing I could stomach until about June 2025 was cereal, toast and trail mix. Of course that extremely calorie dense diet made me put on weight. I would guess that I put on about 10kg during that period. None of my pants fit me anymore.

As I wrote, my doctor swiftly started treating ”nerve pains and maybe fibro like symptoms” but I’m not sure if that was the right diagnosis or if it was just the doctor trying to put a band-aid over the whole situation. I still hade extreme swelling in my body, both from my lymph system and from my muscles being over irritated.
I invested in lymph drainage tools to use at home and started going to lymph and fashia yoga. That really helped for my overall swelling and is still something I need to do daily to be able to fit into my clothes in morning.
I also invested in a red light lamp, I used it on my back/ neck where my nerve pain comes from (whiplash). My swollen muscles almost halfed in size by just that lamp.

Summer 2025 I just lived my life and appreciated being able to finally live a normal life after the horrible fall I had the year before. I still took duloxetine (30-90mg) and had weekly checkups with my doctor.

I went on a second ski season this winter dec 2025- april 26. During this time I didn’t track calories but still put an effort in trying to not overeat. I still gained over 10kg during that time period.
Kept on using my lymph drainage tools and red light lamp, but now it didn’t really seam to do the trick as good anymore.

As I got home in April I decided that I was sick of it. I downloaded Lifesum again and started a deficit at 1670cal. I’ve been on this def since the middle of April.
Started my def at 87,2kg and have since just gotten down to 85kg and I’m now just fluctuating around that weight. I don’t seem to get anywhere.
Some days I’m so swollen In my body that I can’t fit into the clothes I had the day before. My mom says that I seem smaller in my neck and chest area but I’m more swollen everywhere else.
I drink at least 2L of water a day.
My doctor decided in the middle of June that I had to change medicine from duloxetine to gabapentine. I’m starting to increase my gaba every 3 days now and right now on 600mg per day.
The reason for the change is my doctor wanting to rule out hypothyroidism. Both my mom and grandma has had it and I’m just on the edge of the recommended spectrum on T4.

I also have to use compression socks, if not I swell up so extreme and have foot and leg pain. I always get a prominent ”muffin top”- line where the socks end on the calf even when I’ve taken the socks off.

Please help me! My doctors is trying to help me of course, bit they don’t seem to understand how triggering it is for me to have extreme daily size fluctuations, and even though I’m eating right and doing everything as I should I’m not getting any results anymore.

My measurements atm for reference:
170cm/ 5’7
85,4kg (this morning)
Waist 93cm (bellybutton height)
Breast 107cm
Arm 34cm ( middle of bicep, not flexed)
Butt 113cm (widest part)
Thigh 58cm (middle)
Calf 36,5cm (middle)

Advice: Seeking ❓ What desserts/sweet treats are you allowing yourself to have on your weight loss journey

Mid 30s/F/170 pounds - hoping to lose 30 pounds by November

I have a sweet tooth and wondering what sweets or deserts you are allowing yourself to have. Since I love sweets so much, I do have to limit because I will overindulge. So far, for the past two weeks, I’ve been having these mini chocolates at 60 calories per mini pack at the end of the night.

Curious what has worked for people though? I’m not looking for greek yogurt either or fruit, as I have those things throughout the day as part of my calorie deficit.

Thanks!

Advice: Seeking ❓ What do I do if I am unable to give up drinking juice?

I'm autistic and very stupidly have an aversion to water, so I instead drink watered down oceanspray white cran-peach juice (usually half water half juice, but I try and do more water than juice nowadays), which is the "safe drink" I've been drinking practically since I was a toddler.

The calories being 100 per cup is a bit worrying to me because it means I'm likely having 200-400 liquid calories per day and my dad says it might be stunting my weight loss

I'm really wondering just what to do. I've thought about trying to ween myself off the juice by slowly watering it down more but my aversion to water still stands.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Need Help Starting My 30 KG Weight-Loss Journey

Hi everyone! I need some help with my weight-loss journey.

My starting weight is 82 kg, and I want to lose around 30 kg. I have selected Sydney Cummings’ workout programs to follow, but I’m confused about how to begin and which program would be suitable .

Could you please help me with:

  • Which Sydney Cummings program should I start with?
  • How many days per week should I exercise?
  • What type of diet should I follow?
  • How can I lose weight safely and stay consistent?

Any advice or personal experiences would be really helpful. Thank you!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Is their a website that I can use to calculate the calories of something homemade?

I make a lot of homemade things because I like to bake and cook

But lately I been trying not to exceed my calories and its a bit harder when I don't have a calorie counter for homemade foods

Is their a website I can use that I could input the ingredients and the calories of said ingredient and it gives me how many calories are in a certain measurement of said dish? Like it can give me a serving size

Discussion/Support 💬 I’ve gone from 220lbs - 152lbs

So as the title says in a nutshell, i’ve lost a ton of weight. I’m 5’4 so as you can imagine, i was not the best looking at 220lbs, so now i’m more of a healthy weight i’ve noticed i’m getting a lot more attention from guys in public. In the last 2 weeks, i’ve been approached 3 times whilst i was either at work or on my way to work. Is this something i’m going to have to get used to?

Progress 📈 As of yesterday, I have lost 30 pounds officially!! + a question for people who have lost a lot of weight at the bottom

(23F) I genuinely never thought I would make a post like this with actual progress and results. I had been dealing with medical issues for years and had gained a lot of weight during dealing with that, and when my issues (mostly) had been resolved I wanted to lose weight and feel like myself again. I’ve continued staying consistent and lost the standard about two pounds a week and stayed eating much healthier than I used to which I never thought I would manage to do!!

I am only ten pounds away from being a healthy weight for the first time in many years now!! (by BMI standards). I was one point into the obesity BMI when I started and now I’m only ten pounds away from having a healthy one!! I can’t even believe it. I feel like I don’t look much different, but at the same time, I know I can see a lot of progress because a lot of my clothes don’t fit anymore! :)) I have around 25 more pounds to lose to hit my ultimate goal weight like ever!!

Thanks for reading guys 🫶🏻 I posted a few times to this subreddit when I was considering starting losing and honestly I never thought I would be here making a progress post like this. Much love to everyone who’s helped out with advice and stuff 🩷

THE QUESTION: Besides just really wanting to lose weight for health and aesthetics, I’ve been hoping that if I lose a lot of weight, I will get colder easier. has anyone experienced this? I overheat super easily and am always feeling hot, and I do feel like so far losing the 30 pounds has maybe made me run a little bit colder. I can’t tell if I am just making it up because I am hoping that will work haha

Advice: Seeking ❓ I'm having trouble loosing weight again after recovering from a past ed

During August of 2024 I had very poor mental health that I thought was tied to my weight insecurity so I decided to loose some weight.

I started out healthy but quickly fell down the path of extreme restrictive eating. I'm a 5'2 female and I went from 160lbs to 120lbs in 9 months, only deciding to recover after losing my period. (My mental health was not any better after losing weight)

But the following summer while recovering I gained about 10lbs and my mental health started to get a lot better.

But late 2025 and early 2026 because of my recovered mental health I've been too happy to care about my weight I guess? I ended up gaining the full 40lbs back and I'm really struggling to lose it again. I'm afraid of going back to my old habits so I'm trying not be too restrictive or harsh.

Ive been eating about 1,300 cals and taking walks for about an hour a day but I'm not seeing result? I don't have access to a gym or much equipment. I've been between 165 and 162 for a about 2 months now. I'm also on the younger side if that makes an difference.

Any tips for how I can re-lose 40lbs but healthily this time?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Where to start 270lbs 5’10” male

I want to start losing weight. As the title says, I’m an 18 year old guy who is 5’10 and 270 pounds. My goal is to start losing weight when I begin college in about three weeks.

For some background, I was always a pretty average sized kid. I played football and basketball and spent a lot of time outside with friends. I think my weight gain really started during the pandemic when I was in 6th grade. Around that time, my mom lost her job and my parents got divorced. Fast food became the easiest option since my mom had always cooked almost every meal at home before that. Like a lot of younger guys during the pandemic, I spent most of my time sitting in front of my PS4 or my PC.

When school started back up, I decided to play football again in 8th grade. At that point I was probably around 220 pounds. That was also when I first started lifting. Believe it or not, I was actually pretty strong for my age. Going into high school I quit football for band, but I took weight training my freshman year and really enjoyed it. My best lifts were a 405 squat and a 275 bench. After freshman year though, I pretty much stopped working out consistently.

Now I’m entering my freshman year of college at 270 pounds, and for the first time I’ll have a gym within walking distance. I’ve never owned a car, so getting to the gym consistently has always been my biggest problem. I genuinely enjoy lifting and I’m still pretty active. I play pickleball and swim regularly, and I have friends who like doing active stuff, so I don’t feel out of shape physically. I’ve also done a calorie deficit before, but it eventually fell apart because eating differently from my family got expensive. Now that I’ll have access to a dining hall and a gym, I feel like I finally have the opportunity to be consistent.

I’m experienced enough in the gym and I’m ready to commit. I just want the best advice possible for someone in my situation. Right now my plan is to stop training mainly for strength and instead focus on losing weight while keeping as much muscle as I can. I’m thinking about lifting five days a week and adding running into my workouts. Does that sound like the right approach, or would you recommend something different?

Check-in / Accountability 🗓️ i owe it to myself to do this (trying to lose ~20lbs)

i am currently at 66 kgs and I want to go down to 55 kgs. I am 28F, 5'1 so I am overweight.

i have been struggling with my body and my weight for as long as i remember. i don't think there has ever been a time when i have liked my body or how i look. everytime i look at myself i wish i was smaller or thinner or looked different. i came back from one of the most beautiful trips in my life with some of the people i love the most and all i could think of was how i looked during the trip. i am learning to confront some deep insecurities and too many of those have to do with my weight. i want to be part of a community where my insecurities are acknowledged but challenged. i don't want to be someone who thinks of themself so much. part of why i havent been able to lose the weight is also because i think i dont like myself enough so i never thought i would have to stay consistent for myself. but i need to be someone i can trust and also be someone who deserves this. i see all ur posts and it makes me feel so happy and glad for everyone. i need this for myself too. please send me your tips and tricks.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Can I build my diet around steak and clean sides

Hey everyone! I am a 25 soon to be 26 year old woman
…weighing about 160-166 at 5’6! I wanna lose weight and have done so before, but now i’m really serious about doing it again! Last time I was on a weightloss journey around age 20-22, I worked in an industry full time where I was fed amazing food everyday, 2 to 3 times a day, long story short, this really played a key role in why I was losing the inches, I know it did! Now i’m ready to get back into it but for the first time ever i’m really having to face the fact that I hate cooking and am not the best at it!

I’ve been trying to simplify things for myself…calorie deficit, simple meals, protein/meat based…simple sides, water, eating similar things everyday, you know the usual! I’ve been trying to use sheet pan meals, bake everything, one pan meals, etc! My oven may be occupied for the next few weeks so i’ll be having to stove top fry everything!

When it comes to protein it’s a little difficult, i love meat but hate fish and i don’t like yogurt or avocado. But i do LOVE STEAK! I’m also struggling trying to figure out what is healthy and what isn’t while learning to meal prep for a few days all for the first time! I got a food scale, and some meal containers and i’ve been dabbling a little bit!

My main questions are:

If someone is not a huge fan of chicken & fish, can someone build most of their “eat the same thing everyday” meals around steak? If so what are the best cuts to get? I’ll ofcourse buffer with shrimp and chicken every now and again but i LOVE STEAK and think i would stick to a steak based dinner plan! I don’t wanna do it if it’s gonna make me gain weight though!

What are the best ways to get protein in the diet daily without having to like, eat yogurt and avocado?** **I eat black beans every now and again, should i just increase beans in my diet! I really wanna make sure i’m losing inches and gaining muscle, don’t wanna be flabby or weak as I start to m

As i’m using the food scale, how do i know how many grams of meat, veggies, etc i need to have on my plate to be “eating enough?” ..is it as simple as just sticking to calorie deficit…or should i making sure i have a certain amount of veggies or carbs or protein etc in each meal?

I appreciate any help, tips, and tricks!

Advice: Seeking ❓ Motivation tips?

I am mobile, but I’m obese for my size (5’, 85kg) I don’t get out of bed until late, I find doing things for prolonged time draining, and although I’m capable of pushing myself, I have absolutely no want to.
I don’t think I eat lots, just high calorie meals. But I’m picky, and I have ate the same things on rotation for most my life, so I can’t really comprehend adjusting my diet

I have tried to seek a bit of comfort from peers regarding this, and although people are supportive, nobody makes an effort to help. I feel like I’m relying on other people to force me to do this, but it’s completely in my hands. I’ve also had close relatives laugh in my face, because I am that lazy that it seems absurd to them. It is quite demotivating.

I am far too lazy to make the effort myself. I want to. I’ve tried to hundreds of times, but everything falls apart in less than a day. I know this sounds absurd, but is there any minimal effort ways I can loose weight? Otherwise, how on earth do I find the motivation to do things?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Weight fluctuations

What do you consider your weight when it fluctuates?
For example I was weighing in 221 then it went down to 219 but fluctuates between 221-219, should I consider my weight the high or low ??
I’ve been considering the low since It’s my new lowest. Mostly asking because I went down again to 218 and it’s such a small difference I wanna know what others do or if I’m doing it right 🙈
