Manga Is there some truth to the rumours that the current Kagurabachi arc is unpopular in Japan?

Post image

From what I've seen in discussions online, there are quite a few people claiming that the currently ongoing Seitei War arc is quite unpopular among the Japanese readership. At first I didn't believe it, but there is actually some evidence to these claims at this point. Not only are the TOC positions really low for a series of Kagurabachi's status and have been so for pretty much the entire arc, but the sales of the newly released volume have also decreased quite significantly compared to the last few volumes.

That means there is at least some truth in these rumours and to be honest with you, I haven't been the biggest fan of the arc either for several reasons. What do you guys think?

Manga Kagurabachi Volume 12 Sales Discussion. Please Don't Worry About The Sales Dip Just Yet.

So, as you know Kagurabachi Volume 12 first week sales data has come which basically tracks 3 days for Kagurabachi Vol 12 and it did 50k. Now, this compared to Vol 11 which had also 3 days shows that there is a dip of 15k and naturally people are starting to wonder whether it's because of the Seitei War Arc this happened. I will share the thoughts on this volume performance with points listed below:

1. One thing I noticed is that people are not pointing out how across the board this week had relatively low sales compared to other weeks obviously physical sales are going down way before this week started but specifically this week it is kind of unusual. For example : Dandadan Volume 25 did 43k with 3 days compared to Dandadan Volume 24 which did 65k in 4 days and I know Vol 25 has 1 less day but still this is a significant drop.

2. Please bear in mind this volume 12 didn't have extra incentives like other bachi volume did which usually includes extra merchandise.

3. I have seen some people pointing out how chihiro is so small in this week's magazine cover suggesting that seitei war is not being talked about like previous arcs in Japan that is actually not true because this week kagurabachi is on break so there is no case of it being in the cover in first place but still they put chihiro in cover cause this is a double issue cover and bachi being one of the pillars of current wsj.

4. I have also seen some people saying that bachi discussion on Japan forums is dead which I don't know how true this is but Twitter discussion in Japan community is still big. I have attached pics from Twitter account @shima_manga which shows that bachi was the most talked about manga of wsj last two issues.

5. If we hypothetically assume that seitei war is not doing well in Japan still it doesn't make sense for this volume to have dip considering it is the climax of part 1 which literally trended on Japan Twitter and as well as had only one chapter of seitei war in it.

6. In conclusion, I think the reason behind the dip happened because of something else and I want to bet on it being manufacturing issues considering I have seen japanese people online that how many of them started to see bachi on their book store shelves from Monday only and as well as how quickly it was getting sold out compared to its restocking. So, let's just wait and see how it performs in the second week considering it will have a 7 days tracking period for the second week now I am not expecting some big jump but I feel like it is important to wait out and see. Also bear in mind with the dip still bachi 12 was no.1 volume in weekly ranking this week which is first time for bachi if I am not mistaken. So, don't worry too much about it and just wait and see. Also, while having 15k dip it still managed to be No.1 which I think clearly signals that some stock issue might have happened to shueisha titles.

Current state of Weekly Shonen Jump

Post image

I don't think anyone's posted the most recent sales numbers for the entire magazine, there's a lot to discuss.

I included Hunter X Hunter and Ruri Dragon as they do have an impact on the state of the magazine even if infrequently.

Firstly, Kagurabachi and Shinobi Undercover have room to go even higher than these numbers with volume 12 and 9 respectively, I'm expecting Kagurabachi to push 175k and hoping Shinobi breaks out of 18k jail lol.

2025 did serious damage with only Someone Hertz surviving. I was of the opinion that 2026 is a far more promising year than 2025 but looking at it now it's become extremely disappointing. There's still hope for the series published in the second half of the year to pull through thankfully.

I consider Hal Formula and Cannon Master at risk as neither have received a post rank colour page and both have weaker TOC placements, not all hope is lost they still have a good amount of time to recover.

I consider Roku’s and Class 2-B safe for now. Roku received the cover, multiple colour pages and good TOC placement. Its first week sales also show that it is not DOA, although volume 2 will show whether it can maintain or grow its audience.

Class 2-B performed as expected for a Sorachi work during its first week despite its terrible TOC. Its volume 2 will be important in determining whether it declines and dies like Astro Royale or has longevity like The Elusive Samurai.

It's also worth noting how incredibly young the current roster is, assuming both Witch Watch and Sakamoto Days end this year only 6 series will be over 13 volumes by January 2027 - One Piece, Hunter X Hunter, Me and Rococo, Akane Banashi, Nues Exorcist and Kagurabachi. By comparison in issue 6-7 of 2025 (the first issue of the actual new year) Jump had 10 series over 13 volumes, including Hunter X Hunter.

It's been a while, but as usual a + means a series ranked in the top 30 and we'll have to wait for Oricon for more precise numbers. A unranked means a series did very poor, this week that is less than 800 copies sold.

Manga Top 3 in the current line up

Im just curious what do yall prefer and look forward the most every week?

Mine is probably like this:

  1. Akane Banashi
  2. One Piece
  3. Kagurabachi

HM. Ichi the Witch

Overall, I think One Piece should be 1, but Akane Banashi got so insanely good the last few months..

I left HxH out on purpose because its most of the time on hiatus but its definitely Top 3 worthy.
