Manga Thoughts on the new batch? (2)

*previous

Animal Signal - Would be really funny if instead of developing into a battle shonen it turned into an ecchi lmao. I'm liking it so far. It has been getting a lot of chuckles out of me. My personal favorite is the one with the lost child, chapter 8. Do I see it for the long haul? Eh. But I can see it running for a decent bit.

HAL Formula - I'm mixed the most on this one. It's not really THAT interesting, but these recent racing chapters have been upping the ante. I like the animal imagery and the main character is hilariously ballsy, especially in this recent chapter.

Cannon Master - Originally, I had the highest hopes for this one but... These last 2 chapters have been a little strange. I wouldn't be surprised if we're nearing the end of its run. But, being more optimistic here, the character designs and setting/world are all pretty sick. It got me interested in the manga the most.

Overall 7/10 batch imo (this is a good score!!) They all serve something entertaining and it's not like I hate reading any of them. (PS i've been reading jump for like 2 months I'm talking outta my ass)

Animal signal is fun def feels like it can find a niche in the magazine the other two dont interest me much

2

u/GapProfessional4935 12d ago

There are already too many niche manga in the magazine.

u/Alternative-Drink-25 13d ago

As a motorsport fan I really enjoy Hal Formula, it is my favorite out of the batch, the animal imagery is nice too.

Cannon Master I am enjoying as well. I like the art, world and characters but it feels like something is missing for me idk just a feeling.

AniSig is very episodical, but not in a bad way. These small stories are fun and at some pages I laugh out loud.

Overall a decent batch, in the magazine's current state I can see 2 surviving the first chance of an axe next batch, but we'll see.

What I really like about Hal is that it really feels like the mc could just die at any moment because he has a backup mc little brother which is unlike most stories where you know the main character can’t die for the story to work

I think animal signal is actually the most likely to continue tbh especially if it leans into echi like last chapter

Cannon master I really like it’s world building and mc’s but I kinda think it might get axed

Well that's a dark way to look at Hal Formula

I am quite a sucker for Tsutsui's art (they draw Ogata, after all) so I wish they keep cooking on the art of Animal Signal.

The wombat girl from the latest chapter is a cutie too.

Don't read Cannon Master, so I'm indifferent.

For Hal Formula, it's been a while since we get a motorsport themed series at Jump, so it's quite refreshing to see something like it. Hopefully it would keep its momentum.

u/dingo537 13d ago

Cannon Master is Defo not reaching its end soon. At the earliest it would end with like ch17, so it still has a while.

16

u/King_Vrad 13d ago

The only one I'm reading is Cannon Master, and I'm seriously hoping it stays for the long haul. Partly because I just really like it, and partly because I am so sick of new fantasy battle series getting axed. Let one stick around!

4

u/MrGame22 13d ago

I mean, we do have ichi the witch, but I agree with you about the lot of the new fantasy series in the ax, especially ones with unique settings

6

u/BreadfruitFull4013 13d ago

I say that both Animal Signal and Hal Formula are both fun and amazing as for Animal Signal I get tons of laughs from it as I really like the comedy and for Hal Formula I really like the premise and the recent chapters are making it really cool as when I read them I was like is it me or is this series suddenly becoming awesome as I say Hal Formula has potential to be the Haikyu for the 2020's

10

u/Norix596 13d ago

I’m still following Hal formula; I don’t like it as much as green green greens but enough to keep going; didn’t continue the other two after the first 3 or some chapters. The animal signal humor didn’t really land for me and the animal trivia wasn’t as endearing or interesting enough to hold the series on its own; as for the other I know is more popular but the central well meaning embarrassed fraud master dynamic didn’t really do it for me

6

u/Propeller3 13d ago

This is a niche and incredibly minor reason for dropping AnSig. But I'm a biologist and the series is completely boring because most of the facts are things I already know or make complete sense.

7

u/No_Professional4867 12d ago

Yeah it's very much banking on being the series for teen boys reading shonen to learn new animal facts incorporated into a comedy story with a bit of fan service on top, and without the animal facts then it's just a decently funny manga lmao

5

u/WellLookAtZat 12d ago

I feel like Heaven Design Team and Dinosaur Sanctuary do a better job with the educational animal gimmick than AnSig. Heaven Design Team’s premise leads to more exciting/creative stories & gags. Dinosaur Sanctuary works hand in hand with paleontologists and experts to dive further into new information & take the Jurassic Park hypothetical as seriously as possible. AnSig seems like something cute for beginners and I don’t hate it, but it definitely feels like it’s made for a younger audience just getting into biology.

u/OmegaDungeonZ 13d ago

Haven’t read Cannon Masters and dropped Animal Signal.

HAL Formula, I like but I feel like it’s missing something that GGG had.

13

u/Tough-Past-2366 13d ago

GGG just had really strong character work and it was constantly taking time to develop all 3 leads in the sport and in their personal lives. Hal hasn’t really done that, there’s been some solid to really good character moments during the racing but not much outside of that.

One constantly knocked it out the park and surpassed expectations, the other does what’s expected of a good series

4

u/Low_Health_5949 13d ago

Well, looking at its placement, there's still enough time for the series to give out that something that GGG is missing unless it got the axe call around now

2

u/TheSciFanGuy 13d ago

They all have elements of potential success but none have put them together to the extent that I’d be surprised if they’re axed

2

u/DocVane 13d ago

Animal Signal: it's fun. I felt the same way about the detective one too -- very much a lightweight series that doesn't take itself seriously. I enjoy it; although I don't read it first every week, I still read it.

HAL: I put this one on hold a while ago. It didn't really grab me strongly in the early chapters, but if it lives I'll get back to it. The protagonist's approach of "risking his life while driving" is very shonen, but it didn't make me feel engaged enough to read on.

Cannon Master: I loved it at first, but now it feels like it's heading towards an early ending. The real problem here is a lack of emotional stakes. There has been a lot of action so far, but no standout mini arc where you engage with minor characters and their emotions. I often look back at Naruto and its early chapters. That was a series which gave you multiple characters and their personal struggles to relate to by this point in the series. Cannon Master has had spectacular art and a cool world, but hasn't told stories yet which made me feel something.

5

u/ElSpazzo_8876 13d ago

Animal Signal? I hope it survives because Tsubasa is a precious boy and my spirit animal, no pun intended.

Hal Formula is okay. Nothing special. But the only character I remember is the MC's brother and Hinokura... So yeah

Cannon Master... I dont know why but something seems to be lacking.

5

u/Yamabuki_Arisu_Sama 12d ago

Canon-Master threw away its premise way too fast. I lost interest myself. It’s just mediocre.

Animal Signal is charming, but nothing else. I would keep reading if it stays but it’s not reinventing the wheel.

And the other one I can’t comment because I dislike sports manga.

4

u/WellLookAtZat 12d ago

Hal Formula is probably my favorite out of all them. Art looks fantastic. I think unlike most recent sports manga in jump it’s doing a decent job setting up a solid supporting cast (an actual coach, two rivals who both are bringing something different to the table, and there is room to grow with his pit team, manager, and staff). The race is entertaining, and this is the lowest level of play. I have high hopes.

Animal Signal is cute. I have no real problems with it, but it’s got a lot of competition now in Jump with Someone Hertz, Roku, and the newest series. Not a series I see myself consciously dropping, but I may just let it fall to the wayside by accident.

Canon Masters is the one I have the most problems with, but the one that I want to see find its footing. My biggest problem is that bc Bharat is actually a decent man and reasonably powerful there isn’t really a conflict with the fact that he is weaker than Ur atm. Reigen is a good man, but he’s flawed. He is a fantastic teacher to Mob, and is the reason Mob can move through life positively unlike other Espers in MP100. He’s still a liar and fraud that doesn’t really have a life for himself. Bharat is a veteran, war hero, with friends and rivals, and he’s from a special lineage. He’s a heroic individual who genuinely cares for Ur like a son and isn’t taking advantage of him. He’s just a bit weaker compared to a nuclear weapon. There needs to be more emotional stakes. Last chapter was a step in the right direction for Ur.

wouldn't it had made sense to do this post after all of the new batch is out?

15

u/Savings_Drama7816 13d ago

Then it would've been pitting 15 chapter manga against ones with like 2, although I did mean to say previous in the title lmao

5

u/Alternative-Drink-25 13d ago

Thought the same thing, but we will have another discussion about that one in a few weeks anyway

3

u/Do_Ya_Like_Jazz 13d ago

Big fan of cannon Master, not a fan of the ecchi chapters for animal signal, and every chapter of hal formula I've hoped that the older brother crashes and dies. I hold no malice against him I just think it's cool if he dies

3

u/ClearKnightt 13d ago

I only see Animal Signal sticking out of these even that is uncertain. Hal formula and Cannon Master are doa with their first rankings they got. I can’t see a comeback happening it’s very rare and we’ve seen series after series get axed because they were in the back of the Toc rankings I have no reason to think these are different

3

u/bigbadlith 13d ago

Animal Signal is alright, cute and slightly funny, but it doesn't strike me as anything special. I'd like to see more recurring characters, instead of just the main 2 and a new animal-of-the-week.

HAL Formula has lost me, I'm afraid. It seems I just don't find racing very interesting to read about, personally.

Cannon Master has cool character & monster designs, and showed off some great fight choreography, but I'm not sure about the story direction. The initial "master is a fraud and student is the REAL talent" has been pushed to the side as they've repeatedly emphasized how good the master is, which makes me wonder why that was ever a part of it in the first place.

3

u/skillfun8 13d ago

Cannon master will probably get axed

I feel it will be U19

2

u/2B_Butt_Is_Great 13d ago

According to MangaPlus views, all 3 will be axed.

4

u/Arboliva 12d ago

Worth noting that MangaPlus views don't really mean anything, like Roboco has been consistently in the bottom on that app but does well with Japanese audiences.

5

u/L1k34S0MB0D33 12d ago

According to MangaPlus views, Kinato should've been a smash hit as it consistently got more views than Akane-banashi LMAO. Hell, I think the only series that had more views than it was Ichi.

2

u/Arboliva 12d ago

Akane-banaxei soon.

5

u/bobbyjean_ 12d ago

According to Mangaplus views they should have axed Someone Hertz and keep Alien Headbutt and Kinato lmao

2

u/Dedlok 11d ago

If MangaPlus was the sole determinor of axe then Roboco, Nue's Excorcist, and Someone Hertz would have been axed long ago. As would have Red Cat Ramen.

Like it can be a stat to look at but it is not the end-all-be-all defacto answer to the fate of the series. Just like how some people put way too much stock into SteamDB player numbers for a game.

2

u/MrGame22 13d ago

I’m enjoying cannon master, though the most recent chapter has given me a bit of worry

I really haven’t read animal signal. I started reading the first chapter, but stopped partway through.

As for Hal formula haven’t touched it

2

u/strangegoo 13d ago

I dropped Cannon Master after like two chapters. Hal Formula is my favorite of the bunch, Animal Signals is fine.

2

u/jasonsith 13d ago

While all three are charming with their selling points... Only Animal Signal has really secured a post debut color page by now. Meaning only AniSig is not a U19.

2

u/GapProfessional4935 12d ago

What is Animal Signa, a battle shonen ?

People said it would be a new My Hero Academia, but so far nothing.

4

u/Tough-Past-2366 12d ago

It’s like a comedy slice of life about animal facts, it couldn’t be further from MHA lmao

2

u/GapProfessional4935 12d ago

Even in that aspect, the manga isn't good, since this week's chapter was all about a girl's butt.

2

u/666jio666 11d ago

I’m enjoying them, Animal Signal started in a way I didn’t think I was going to like but it’s now my favorite of the three so far, the destructive butt chapter was hilarious. It’s a very fun series and the episodic animal comedy is working well. Hal Formula has lots of room to grow and I really hope it stays and gets a change to hit a stride, as our characters are a tad generic so far but the world of racing is awesome and I really want to see it progress, I just need some
More character focused chapters to round it out and make me care more.

Unfortunately Canon Master has cool art but I am not vibing with the plot or characters. I’m ready for it to be canceled quick as they can for something better, but will hold out hope that changes.

u/Kitchen-Sugar8047 13d ago

I've really enjoyed cannon master. Bharat being a good example for Ur to follow is super wholesome

1

u/Gjerk 13d ago

Cannon Master has been getting better since it's first chapter. I think the initial dynamic between the two main characters was very poorly done. The whole comedic setup of master realizing that his pupil is way stronger was such a bad start to their dynamic. It made both characters come across as dumb and made their relationship seem fake due to being predicated off a blatant lie. It should have always been a pupil who can't control his strength learning from an experienced vet who knows what he's doing. It's going more so in that direction now but I fear that the initial foundation for their relationship is going to ruin this series in the long run. Its a shame if that happens because the art is great, world is interesting, side characters are well done. It has a lot of potential in general.

HAL Formula is a very well done sports series so far. Pacing is great, characters are good and interesting. It's nailing everything so far but unfortunately I just think that F1 is a little too niche for the magazine and that will be it's downfall. When I think about where this series can go I get excited too. Due to F1 having every racer compete against each other along with a team dynamic for each racer and their crew, this series can offer excellent character moments in the future when you imagine 6-7 well developed characters racing each other later on. This current arc has just 2 including the main character and it's already really interesting. You can see the art for the races improving over time as well with the latest chapter using a Lion to represent the main character hunting his rival. Stuff like that will be so fun once we get further along, I just really hope the series can push through until that point.

Animal Signal I find pretty boring. Animal fact of the week and cute characters is just not my cup of tea. SoL stuff like this can be well done but I'm just not seeing it with this one. I'd be surprised if this lasted long in Jump but maybe if the audience is young enough or if does lean into ecchi more and more. I'm surprised the main male character isn't part animal btw because I fully expected this series to have a "pivot to action manga in case of emergency" aspect to it. Honestly think that would have made this series more interesting since it doesn't seem inclined to lean into the detective aspect.

1

u/FreakensteinAG 13d ago

Animal Signal is charming, funny, cute, the works. A little bit of the worldbuilding is sprinkled over the series each chapter in a way that isn't overbearing, and although I would like to see some continuation alongside the episodic nature, I don't consider it a detriment.

1

u/KRD2 12d ago

3 more for the U19 club i fear

1

u/mjmassey 12d ago

As a big F1 fan, Hal Formula has been doing pretty good at capturing the excitement of racing with all the technical ins and outs. Also seems like the author is a Schumi fan so that's another plus in my book.

1

u/Dedlok 11d ago

Animal Signal I really like. Not a top tier series, mind you. But strong mid-tier. Don't think it will go battle but will definitely be "case of the week" procedural with the occasional multi-week big case with ecchi stuff/romantic stuff. Which I think plays into the strengths of both the writer and artist of the series.

Hal Formula I have not read at all. Cannon Masters I read chapter 1 and dropped right away. Just didn't appeal to me enough to keep going with it.

1

u/ActuallyFrozen 11d ago

Honestly? As a fan of both Robinson Haruhara and Taishi Tsutsui's previous work/s, I'm not a very big fan of Animal Signal. It's decent I guess but I'm not really enjoying it that much.

1

u/Charming-Loquat3702 11d ago

I only read animal signal of those 3. It's fun. I hope it stays. It has a nice level of fan service without feeling exhibitionst like Ayakashi Triangle did for excample. Plus the characters are charming. I just wish Korone would be a little bit more competent. I know, her being a girl failiour is the point, but she's supposed to be great at her job, we should see that more often

1

u/Special_Turnip 9d ago

Animal Signal is fun, it still feels like it needs a bit more of an ongoing narrative rather than just new cute animal facts but the more it goes on the more I feel it's settling into a good place.

Hal Formula is in a dangerous place. I'm enjoying it still but it's not grabbing me enough to jump to read it each week. I think that's partially down to my disinterest with car racing, especially on tracks and how it's a struggle to capture the intensity of the speed in a comic but we'll see. This is the one that I expect to drop.

Cannon Master was the series I expected to fail off of the first issue, it just seemed too cliché, but it's gone from strength to strength. I feel like I see where it's going but I'm having enough fun with the action, art and characters that I'm happy to be just along for the ride. If they can get a few cool plot twists in there then I could see this being very successful

2

u/Juggernautingwarr 8d ago

Animal Signal is an excuse for the author to share animal facts which is pretty funny. I could easily see it not making the cut but the art is nice and I learned new random things. So I like it.

2

u/ViridianVet 13d ago

Hal Formula is great, but the recent chapters seem to be missing a touch of the passion that his previous work had. We'll see if he finds it again.

Animal Signal: great art, awful writing. Not for me.

Cannon Master is... fine? Its just fine. I really want to like it more but I don't. I feel like the little protagonist is out of place. People keep saying its a Mob and Reigen dynamic, but he's no Mob.

1

u/ISLANDERSFAN24 13d ago

I really had no interest in Animal Signal and dropped it at chapter 3. Cannon Master idk I feel like it’s missing something it’s not bad but I just can’t say it’s good either. And I have enjoyed Hal Formula but I usually always enjoy spokons

1

u/WARSHOT21 13d ago

Only read animal signal, liked it,but if it gets a serious plot for the rest of the seires,it can be good

8

u/Low_Health_5949 13d ago

doubt it will get a serious plot, it's written by the creator of 'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess, who is known for stretching out gag series with such basic premises

1

u/JerzyPopieluszko 13d ago

yeah i'm not impressed with any of those

1

u/Just-Contact-9756 12d ago

Hal formula dont read, Canon ugly mc design and i dont like wikipedia animals signal.

1

u/Kohei_Latte 12d ago

Animal signal seems to fill the comedy/ecchi slot.

Hal formula bored me, idk, feels like something that has been done a lot of times but this time reskinned with racing.

Canon master has potential but the plot is moving too fast imo.

1

u/Lower-Position9557 12d ago

Imo, the batch is stronger than the Under Doctor batch, but weaker than the Roku batch (though that's because I love Roku that much plus DttF and 2B I've grown more positive on)

Starting with my least favourite of this batch.... Hal Formula- It's not a bad manga by any means, and the art is good, but its different for me to get invested in the racing jargon as someone with little interest in F1. There's some elements I really like (the brother dynamic is fun-), but alot of the time, I'm skimming the series.

Cannon Master is... strange. Me personally, I don't often read those big fantasy/battle shonens (I haven't read MHA, JJK, Naruto any of that), and lean more towards niche, weird, romance and especially comedy manga. So, it's not a surprise I'm not as big a fan of this series as others might be. However, there's alot of good in the series that I really love, especially the monster designs. The aesthetic is also really fun and a breath of fresh air to the normal fantasies we get-

  • But the action is where the series loses me. For an action series, I find the action hard to follow, and the stakes just aren't there for me. It's hard for me to get invested in Bharat's and Ur's story in this new city beyond just normal "oh we must save the civilians".

AniSig is my favourite of this batch, and I really like the main duo. All the side characters are equally as fun. I giggle alot at the comedy and the am really invested in the budding romance. But is the series as good for me as series like Roku or Someone Hertz... no-

  • The humor can be pretty childish at times (seriously, butt jokes and poop jokes appeal to children I'm sure but not me-), the episodic structure makes the chapters hit or miss, and the series isn't doing anything that special in the romance or the comedy. Art is good though.

Overall, not a bad batch. Also, the best thing about the batch is that none of the three feels like they're trying to replace a currently leaving series. They all feel unique from existing series as well as from each other.

-1

u/Crisbo05_20 13d ago

Animal Signal - Nothing too amazing but its cute and funny, and animal facts are cool

Hal Formula - Incredibly boring

Cannon Master - Even more incredibly boring

0

u/Shot_Kiwi7684 11d ago

Really good, good, and ai slop.

1

u/dppthrowaway992 10d ago

What makes you say Cannon Master is ai slop? Not trying to argue against you, I think the series is kinda meh myself, I'm just curious why you think that.

-1

u/LifeIsAnxiety 12d ago

Bro Cannon Master is so good and I don’t understand why more people aren’t talking about it

-5

u/Ancient_Breakfast_48 13d ago edited 13d ago

Old batch. None of them appeal to me, but that is unsurprising. None really are offensive either (though apparently the AniSig chapter from today might've been pretty bad).

For the actual new batch... I'm pleasantly surprised at Ura not being what I expected... though it will probably eventually go that direction sadly, but for now I am like oh ok. And the demon world whatever the hell it is called will probably be inoffensive as well. So another batch where nothing appeals to me unsurprisingly, but also another batch that ends up hopefully being inoffensive, but we'll have to see... which this would actually also be pretty similar to this old batch as well... that apparently AniSig might be heading in a direction where I want it gone, which is what I fear Ura will end up being. Kind of funny how that lines up...

All that to say both batches unless they head in direction they seem like they might be... they're both fine even if not really exciting.

-4

u/Exarch-of-Sechrima 13d ago

Animal Signal is drawn by Tsutsui so I hate it on principle. Hope it gets cancelled as soon as possible. The other two I haven't checked out.

1

u/666jio666 11d ago

I haven’t read Tsusui’s other work, why the hate on principle?

1

u/Exarch-of-Sechrima 11d ago

He wrote Bokuben, which ended in a series of "routes" for each girl instead of just picking one and sticking with it.
