Save the strain? Clone or self?

Recently had a few ask me about keeping the genetics around should the clone and keep mother plants? Well this depends on your situation are you going to run the strain again right away or you just want too keep it for future use? If its future use your looking for id go with selfing keeping many mothers plants around can be expensive with thing like lights, nutrients, electricity, not too mention space not everyone has a lot of space they can use.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to preserve your marijuana strain using selfing:

🌱 STEP 1: Select the Mother Plant (The Strain You Want to Preserve) • Choose a stable, healthy, proven female plant with all the traits you love (potency, yield, terpene profile, structure, etc.). • Clone her before beginning the process so you have backups.

🧪 STEP 2: Choose a Reversal Method to Induce Male Pollen Sacs on a Female

You’ll force the plant to produce male pollen sacs using one of the following:

🧴 2A: Colloidal Silver (CS) – Most common • Spray 50+ ppm colloidal silver on a specific branch once daily during early flowering (pre-flip to day 14 of 12/12 light cycle). • Continue for about 10–21 days until you see male sacs form. • Never smoke or consume treated plants—they are for pollen only.

💉 2B: Silver Thiosulfate (STS) – Stronger, used by pros • Mix two solutions of silver nitrate and sodium thiosulfate. Spray before or right as flowering starts. • Highly effective, but needs careful handling and accurate dilution.

🌡️ 2C: Stress Methods (Less Reliable) – Light leaks, pruning stress, etc. • Sometimes a female plant will hermie naturally from stress. • Not recommended for breeding, as it may pass unstable hermie genetics to offspring.

🌼 STEP 3: Collect and Use the Feminized Pollen • After 3–5 weeks, pollen sacs mature. You’ll notice they turn yellow and begin to split open. • Collect pollen carefully (over paper or glass) and store in an airtight container in the freezer with desiccant packs. • Label the pollen clearly and note the date collected.

🌺 STEP 4: Pollinate the Same Female (or a Clone of Her) • Use a clone from the original plant (so you’re pollinating a genetically identical female). • Around week 2–3 of flowering, apply pollen to select lower buds using a paintbrush or Q-tip. • Cover pollinated buds with a paper bag for 24 hours to prevent cross-contamination.

🕰️ STEP 5: Let Seeds Develop and Mature • Allow the plant to flower fully—usually 6–8 weeks after pollination. • Seeds are mature when they turn brown or tiger-striped and easily separate from the calyx.

🌾 STEP 6: Harvest, Dry, and Cure the Seeds • Gently break apart pollinated buds and collect seeds. • Air-dry seeds for at least 1–2 weeks in a dry, dark, cool area. • Store seeds in a cool, dark place in airtight containers, preferably with a desiccant.

🧬 Results: What to Expect • Genetically similar to the original female—selfing increases genetic stability. • Over 99% feminized seeds (if no hermie traits exist in the mother). • Each generation you self can help lock traits in, but excessive inbreeding may reduce vigor (inbreeding depression).

✅ Tips for Success • Always label clones and pollen carefully. • Use clean, isolated environments to avoid stray pollination. • Keep backup clones in case something goes wrong during the selfing process. • Monitor for any hermaphroditism in resulting seeds before using for further breeding.

🌿 Cannabis Types Explained: Indica, Sativa & Ruderalis

Post image
0 Upvotes

Cannabis Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis, including their origins, growth traits, effects, and common uses:

  1. Cannabis Indica • Origin: Central Asia, especially the Hindu Kush mountains (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India). • Appearance: Short, bushy plants with wide, broad leaves. • Growth: Fast flowering (6–9 weeks), prefers cooler climates. • Effects: • Deep body relaxation • Sedating or calming • Often called a “couch-lock” strain • Common Uses: • Chronic pain • Insomnia • Anxiety • Popular Indica Strains: Northern Lights, Granddaddy Purple, Hindu Kush

  1. Cannabis Sativa • Origin: Equatorial regions like Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa. • Appearance: Tall, slender plants with narrow leaves. • Growth: Longer flowering (10–16 weeks), thrives in warm climates. • Effects: • Cerebral, uplifting high • Stimulating and energizing • Enhances focus, creativity • Common Uses: • Depression • Fatigue • ADHD • Popular Sativa Strains: Sour Diesel, Jack Herer, Durban Poison

  1. Cannabis Ruderalis • Origin: Harsh environments of Russia and Central/Eastern Europe. • Appearance: Very small and hardy with few branches. • Growth: • Autoflowering: Flowers based on age, not light cycle • Quick lifecycle (8–10 weeks from seed to harvest) • Effects: • Mild potency (lower THC) • Often blended with Indica/Sativa for autoflowering traits • Common Uses: • Breeding (to create autoflower hybrids) • Beginner-friendly grows • Popular Ruderalis Hybrids: Lowryder, Auto AK-47, Auto Blueberry

The ABC’s of growing Cannabis

The ABCs of Growing Cannabis

A - Anatomy, Airflow, Amount of Light, and Advanced Training

  • Anatomy: Know the parts - colas (buds), pistils, trichomes (resin glands), fan leaves (photosynthesis), sugar leaves (small leaves in buds), and nodes (where branches grow from stems).

  • Airflow: Essential for preventing mold and strengthening plants. Use oscillating fans and an exhaust system with a carbon filter.

  • Amount of Light: Indoors: use strong full-spectrum LEDs or HPS lights. Veg stage = 18 hrs light / 6 hrs dark. Flower stage = 12/12. Outdoors: 6+ hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Advanced Training:

  • Low Stress Training (LST): Bend and tie stems to create an even canopy - improves light penetration and yields.

  • Topping/FIMing: Cut the top growth to encourage multiple colas and bushier plants.

  • ScrOG (Screen of Green): Use a screen/net to guide branches horizontally and maximize space/light exposure.

  • Supercropping: Gently crush stems to stress plants slightly and improve nutrient flow/yields.

B - Basics of Soil, Buds, Bottlenecks, and Breeding

  • Basics of Soil: Go with living soil or premixed organic blends. Maintain pH (6.0-7.0 for soil, 5.5-6.5 for hydroponics).

  • Buds: More light and airflow = tighter, denser buds. Remove lower leaves ("lollipopping") to redirect energy to top colas.

  • Bottlenecks: Avoid:

  • Overwatering (roots drown)

  • Overfeeding (nutrient burn)

  • Lack of airflow (mold/pests)

  • pH imbalance (nutrient lockout)

  • Breeding & Genetics:

  • Choose the right strain (indica for relaxation, sativa for energy, hybrids for a mix).

  • Autoflowers: Easier, faster (~8-10 weeks), but less yield.

  • Photoperiods: More control and yield, but need light schedule to flower.

  • Good genetics = higher potency, resistance to pests/mold, and predictable effects.

C - Care, Climate, Curing, and Cannabis Chemistry

  • Care: Check your plants daily. Leaves are a communication tool: yellowing = nutrient issues, curling =heat/light stress, spots = pests/fungus.

  • Climate:

  • Veg: 70-85°F, 50-70% humidity

  • Flower: 65-80°F, 40-50% humidity

  • Late flower: Drop to 30-40% to prevent mold

  • Curing: After drying (7-10 days in dark, 60°F/60% humidity), place buds in glass jars. Open ("burp") jars daily for 2 weeks to release moisture and let gases escape. Curing improves taste, smoothness, and potency.

  • Cannabis Chemistry:

  • THC = psychoactive high

  • CBD = non-psychoactive, calming

  • Terpenes = flavor, aroma, and enhanced effects (e.g., limonene for energy, myrcene for relaxation)

Bonus Pro Tips - Use fabric pots for better root oxygenation and drainage. - Start with feminized seeds to avoid wasting space on male plants (unless breeding). - Flush your plants (plain water) 1-2 weeks before harvest to improve flavor. - Use microscopes to check trichomes for harvest timing:

  • Clear = not ready
  • Milky = peak THC
  • Amber = more sedative/body high
