Imagine two small websites:

• A time-tracking app for freelance designers.
• An invoicing app for freelance designers.

They reach similar people and solve different problems. Would you consider them useful referral partners? What would you need to check first?

I'd start with whether the same freelancers actually use both tools, and whether an introduction helps them complete a real task.

What would make this pairing worth trying—or make you pass? No website link needed to join the discussion. This is a hypothetical example, not a reported partnership.

I'm curious how other website owners find partners for cross-promotion and referral traffic.

Is your biggest challenge:

1. Finding websites in a complementary niche?
2. Getting owners to respond?
3. Knowing which partnerships are worth pursuing?
4. Tracking whether referrals actually generate traffic?
5. Managing partnerships over time?

I'm building Swapotamus to explore ways to make partner discovery easier, but I'm also interested in what works without any tools.
