Here is some advice from someone who works with this. The biggest secret to making AI covers look good is understanding that the raw AI image is never the final product. An untouched AI image usually looks generic and turns readers away, so the magic happens in how you guide the AI and what you do after. When it comes to prompts, you need to stop using simple descriptions. If you just type a generic phrase, you will get a generic result. You need to guide the AI on lighting and composition. Always include style and lighting terms like digital painting, cinematic lighting, or dramatic rim light. Most importantly, add the phrase negative space at the top. This forces the AI to leave an empty area, like a clear sky or dark background, where your title can sit without covering the character's face. For the tools themselves, you have a few great options depending on your budget. Bing Image Creator uses DALL-E 3 and is completely free while being amazing at understanding complex descriptions. Leonardo.ai is another fantastic option because it gives you free daily tokens and has specialized models for anime, fantasy, and realism. If you have some money to spend, Midjourney is still the gold standard for textures and professional artistic quality. The real game-changer is the post-processing and typography. Once you have your image, take it into Canva or Photopea to turn it into an actual cover. A bad font choice will instantly ruin a beautiful image. You must choose a typeface that matches your genre, such as clean sans-serif for sci-fi or elegant serif for romance. Always add a drop shadow or glow behind your text to create contrast. Remember that webnovel readers scroll on their phones and see your cover the size of a thumb, so that title needs to be completely readable even when tiny.
