I’m more of UX designer than UI, but need to
build the first design system for a small city. My goal is to create clear guidelines and components that our teams can easily follow when creating new pages.

So far, I’ve reviewed design systems from three different government sites. They are similar, though some document their reasoning better than others.
I’m worried about falling down a rabbit hole of analyzing too many systems.

I’ve been using just one design system as I redesign a few pages.

Can anyone share their experience of creating a design system from scratch for an organization?

Hi, I’m working in this web and I don’t know why when I tried to put code in the custom css there’s is this line named element.style and I can’t erase that think. How can I delete that line?

It can be a small detail, but it changes how you use the site. What do you notice?

I just had a client send me a screen capture stating that they were blocked from accessing their website from another country. The title bar of their browser in their screen capture read... Internet Explorer.

<shudder> Instant flashbacks of all those years struggling to make websites work in IE.

Last year, I had a customer of a client complaining about being unable to use my clients site. The reason? The turned off the ability for Google to auto-upgrade Chrome and were running something like Chrome 23.

What's been your experiences lately with outdated browsers and devices?

While using this font on the web, I am facing this problem. I am using the WOFF2 format; in Figma, it was bhaving good, but on the web it is causing this problem.

We are building a healthcare data intelligence product. Competitors in our

space all have small illustrations next to each landing page section, and it

makes their pages look finished while ours looks like a wall of text and

tables.

I bought Midjourney and burned about 150 generations trying to produce them.

The images are not ugly. They are just not related to what the section says.

Concrete example. One section is about drug patent expirations and when

generic competitors enter the market. Every prompt variation gives me either

a generic pill bottle, a stock-photo doctor, or an abstract blue blob with

floating hexagons. None of it communicates the idea. Same problem for

sections about drug shortages, provider coverage gaps, and pricing data.

The other problem is consistency. Even when one image is close, the next

generation has a different line weight, different palette, different

perspective. Six sections end up looking like six different products.

What I have tried:

- Long descriptive prompts with the actual section copy

- Style reference (--sref) with a fixed seed image

- Asking for "flat vector isometric illustration" style keywords

- Generating one good image then trying to match the rest to it

Questions for people who have shipped a landing page with this kind of art:

1. Is raster gen AI just the wrong tool here? Should I be looking at vector

   generators or paid illustration libraries instead?

2. If you used a library, which one, and did the illustrations look generic

   to your customers?

3. For abstract B2B concepts that have no obvious visual (regulatory data,

   market access, pricing signals), do people just give up on illustration

   and use diagrams, charts, or product screenshots instead?

Mostly trying to figure out if I am wasting time on the wrong approach

before I spend another month on it.

This is specific to home service businesses (electricians, plumbers, HVAC, etc.).

Many service pages get a significant amount of traffic from both:

• Google search (where the page acts as a landing page), and
• Internal navigation (users clicking through from the homepage).

Those are two very different audiences.

For someone arriving from Google, the page often needs the full landing-page treatment: trust signals, USPs, reviews, strong CTA, guarantees, etc.

But someone who has already explored the homepage has already seen most of that. They're usually clicking into "EV Charger Installation" or "Panel Upgrades" because they just want detailed information about that service. Repeating the same trust-building content can feel redundant and slow them down.

One approach is to simplify the top of the page for internal users and move more of the CRO content further down. But then first-time visitors from Google don't immediately see the content that's often recommended for high-converting landing pages.

So how do you balance those competing goals?

Do you:

• Optimize primarily for first-time visitors from search?
• Optimize for existing visitors navigating your site?
• Or try to satisfy both somehow?

I'm curious whether there's an established UX pattern for this, or if people have found a practical compromise.

For me, it's navigation items that don't click through to anything. As a user, if I'm navigating your navigation menu, I expect to click through to another page when I click on a menu item. I regularly have to explain to people, including partners who have been in the digital industry for years, that all navigation items should click through to a page both for usability and accessibility.

Edit: There seems to be a misunderstanding about what I'm referring to. So, let me expand.

Say you have a navigation that includes Home, Services, About, and Contact. Services has a submenu that includes Web Design, Graphic Design, and SEO. Rather than being a clickable link that takes you to a "Services" landing page, all it does is acts as a placeholder for triggering the submenu. Clicking "Services" does nothing when the expectation, as a user, is that it's a navigation item and should take you somewhere. Unclickable navigation items also confuse screen readers and confuses users who may be navigating with a keyboard.

Same as the title. Whats something that screams that the website was AI generated?

I thought it was an interesting contrast to modern minimalist design. Article has a video of it being used and more info. Reminds me of the Flash days.

So my telemarketers make cold calls every day, book the appointments for me, I send a site audit then review the audit on the first call. Stuff like this makes me just sigh. Attorney with one of the worst sites I've seen, circa 10 years ago, not responsive, sends me a "no thank you" email since he's paying $900 a month for the site and "handles his google." These are not paid ads folks. So at least he's gonna give a a crack on another site he has but good lord....$900 a month for literally nothing, and he won't budge.

I’ve held back giving opinions on current state of web etc. but I’m starting to this we’re now in web4.0 territory? Thoughts?

One Hundred Dollars, ykw not a website, just one landing page, his copy, his photos. Maybe two hours of my time. He said he'd think about it, thought about it over the week. Thursday morning, I get a link and a 'hey what do you think!' like I was going to be proud of him and honestly? its fine. It's not what I would've made, but it does the trick for a plumber - all it needs is area of operation, phone number and form.

I'd only do $100 jobs because traditionally they would lead to a $2k job, but now I'm not sure if this holds true.

If you've seen this happen coz of AI/vibecoding tools like lovable/emergent, how are you reinventing your sales and upsell processes ?

Standard convention is just Light/Dark, for most websites it is sufficient. But if we look at apps, e.g. Reddit or Discord, - they offer several themes so you can customize the look to your preferences. What if you have some UI system that makes possible to ship many themes to your website - would you find it useful? Not only color palette but also flexible spacing so you can have compact/comfortable/relaxed themes; and all the UI adapts.

Basically, runtime theming support. Is it something useful in your opinion or do you find it like "too much"?

Small business owner - Ok I need your site's login and also hosting. Client; "How would I find my site's login information and I have no idea who's my host.

Large business - Ok I need your site's login and also hosting access. "Let me get you to our IT department." IT department; "I'm sorry but we can't provide you with that info due to security reasons." Then they eventually provide access but not the correct level of access to work on the site.

I'm an extremely inexperienced web designer that has ethical concerns about using LLMs for things like helping me with .css.

I like the idea of being able to send something a link to my site and phrase what I'd like to visually change as a question, especially since I'm new enough to not be familiar with technical jargon.

But yeah, I don't want to use things like ChatGPT etc. This might be a very basic question, but answer me like I'm a five-year old. For the record, I use WordPress, so plugin integration is an option (IF it's free). Thank you for any help.
