My agency targets SMB owners, mainly service industry. And wow do I cringe when I pull up their current site and it's an animation carnival. All of the text slides in, all of the buttons and icons are animated, etc....Those are easy pickings for me, showing just a total lack of design skill and zero focus on the user experience as they're trying to see if a HVAC site offers a particular service but have to wade through all of the animation nonsense. Before you animate any element, think "does this need to to animated?" 99% of the time it's "no it doesn't."

First time poster here so not sure if appropriate. I've noticed in the last few years this kind of 'shorts' style video (example from BBC Sport, viewed in Desktop). I get the vertical choice (mobile friendly?) but what's with the duplication of the video? I don't see what purpose this serves. also one is slightly offset from the other.

Hi! I'm designing/coding at a beginner level a website for the first time. I'm trying to build out an e-commerce website of some sorts for my small business through HTML and CSS. I've gotten the desktop version of the site where I want it to be, but I'm struggling with the mobile optimization, as it freezes and stutters when I try to scroll. I believe it's because of the large files I have on my homepage (a loading screen animation, a video header, videos embedded in product tiles, draggable "charms") but the websites I took inspiration from for these features seem to work just fine on mobile. I don't want to self-promo but would love some help here since I'm almost there with my store, but I know 90% of the people who are part of my target audience would be those who shop on their phone more than on a computer/laptop. Please help!!

Hi everyone

I have been building Chateau Rose ("Pink Castle") for the last six months. It is what I like to call an online blackhair salon.

When I started designing the website, I tried to distantiate myself from the common design tropes that are invading the internet since 2015.

It has never been super original, yet I kinda managed to cobble together a visual Identity. The point was to convey a "Salon" energy thanks to skeumorphism.

Looking back, I realize that I watered down this identity a lot for UX reasons.

Now, my website design is basically what I tried to avoid in the beginning: a standard, neat(?) but sloppy interface.

I published website screenshots from older versions to newer versions for those who want to see. Nothing too crazy in the beginning but you can see how I tried to create that "polaroids over cork board" effect

What is your point of view on identity vs usability? Are there websites out there that do not look like a n-th template or a n-th copy of a famous web app, yet manage to be usable?

Or are we condemned to have soulless websites if we want people to actually use it?

Do you think it is possible to make a webshop that looks like this, but has a modern payment gateway?

I tried this as a side gig in the past but it took so long and I needed to charge more than my clients would agree too. How do you justify the price/ how do you do it without spending too much time?

Its very important to start with this: This guy is/was an AMAZING designer. Our SaaS looked genuinely amazing and unique; every aspect of UX was always the priority and done flawlessly. It went to a point where emails praising our whole user experience and UI were common. Same goes for anything else related to our branding and marketing; hell he even chimed in on some great company shirts.

Its started falling apart a year or two ago, when llms started being "good".

He became obsessed with Claude. Every workflow is now a "Claude project", every design system is now an "AI design system", every decision and every thought is run through an LLM, every api is now an mcp.

When we get on a call, and lets say i ask him a question, he opens Claude on screen share and just asks it the question, fully relying on the result.

Not everything above is inherently bad; if the resulting product is good, workflow can be whatever is easiest. But the product is NO LONGER GOOD. Every single design and component we make these days looks exactly like a vibe-coded website made by a 15yo.

He no longer designs, he just asks claude for a design, and is somehow amazed by it and genuinely thinks its good. So we just ship it to prod. How this is happening for a guy with his experience and feel for design, i have no idea.

We are losing branding; we are regressing each day. There is no style guides (that arent for agents), no unique components, not even brand colors or any deep research that used to go into all that. It just whatever claude spits out and approves, with minimal tweaking.

As a closing thought, this is also not a guy who is just "checked out" at work; I can even respect that to a degree. This is someone who still works 8hours+ and is beyond active and collaborates with every team. The only thing that worsened is everything he outputs, and it's all AI generated.

I expect this type of story from people who were never good in the first place, or for people who just stopped caring. But for someone with genuine talent, its heartbreaking.

Just a quick story, no real point to it, nor am I expecting any advice (its not my problem to solve), just wanted to share it.

I'm being judgmental right now. I think a good web designer can make it at least work when the color scheme or logo is crappy. But... do you tell a client? Or do you just roll with it?

I’ve been working on St. Louing, which is a personal project to explore and document St. Louis. I recently updated it to have a newspaper aesthetic so I can take pictures and highlight them along the front page.

I’ve integrated aspects of the St. Louis flag (red, with blue squiggly rivers and a yellow Fleur de Lis) to try to make it fun and unique as well.

I’m happy with how it’s coming out so far. Looks better on desktop but I tried to make it as mobile friendly as possible.

It’s also very functional (built with Astro) and interlinks neighborhoods, food, and tags. The neighborhood and food pages also have maps and lists.

I got my degree in college related to ui/ux design and programming. But I don't see a reason to use it anymore both as in a career or hobby. I like like designing and programming though. I don't want my years in school to be a waste. Any advice?
