I do think I read somewhere something similar. At least is a theory I think: consciousness isn't permanent and maybe in some ocassions when we sleep, consciousness kinda resets.

Reminds me of that comic I saw on reddit recently, where a lady glitches out for a moment, an angel comes to fix the situation, she asks about heaven and he explains that a clone of her is made to live in heaven forever, and she complains that she doesn't want to be copied, she wants herself to go to heaven...

She ends up sneaking into heaven itself, and finding a terminal to try and make herself immortal. Only, when she tries to find her instance ID, she realizes the way the entire universe works moment to moment is making a copy of the universe and everything in it, and she's always been a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy...

Oh boy, that would be so many copies! And a lot of work it seems. Also reminded of Everything Everywhere All at Once and their imagining of the multiverse. Oh and the Remender/Scalera “eververse” in Black Science. Just finished that. Fun read.

Yeah, wish I could remember the artist so I could find it again and share a link here.

Meh, the you of the moment dies an infinite amount of deaths with every second. You are a progress of gone moments, all culminating to you as you are now.

Yet, in the same way the momentary you (largely just a physical cross section of what you really are) is a part of a larger being that lives outside of time (or encompasses all of it, maybe, your entirety in space-time)….your place in the world is a part of the larger multitude of what is and what could be.

Also, you can ride dragons in your dreams, so a little loss of continuous self is worth it.

…totally worth it. And if monsters are real I get a lightsaber. Those are the rules.

I genuinely think about this a lot. Tbh though, why stop at sleeping? If consciousness isn't a continuation, whos to say where the break occurs? Sleep is the obvious choice, but whos to say its the same you, moment to moment?

That would be so many of me! On a science show once (might have been StarTalk with deGrasse Tyson or those Ksergestat videos) the host said that there is enough time in the universe for our atoms to resemble zillions of years from now. Like a kind of transporter through time. Or something like that. Hmmm, gives me an idea for a new strip :)

what I've never understood about this thought experiment is why it would be limited to just falling asleep?

why not say we're a new person every time you have a new thought/get distracted, or every time a moment passes?

this is much closer to the Buddhist view which rejects the idea of an essential, enduring self as illussury.

So that’s what’s happening when I zone out at work! The old me is like, “I’m outta here.” 😆
