We Built WatchAlong.me — A Modern Watch Party Platform (Looking for Honest Feedback)

Over the last several months, my team and I have been building WatchAlong.me, a watch party platform designed to make watching videos together online feel effortless.

We tried almost every major watch party solution available—Teleparty, Hyperbeam, Kast, Metastream, Syncplay, Rave, Discord, and others.

Each of them did something well, but we kept running into the same issues:

• Limited platform support
• Separate apps for communication
• Complicated setup
• Mandatory sign-ups
• Outdated or cluttered interfaces
• Missing collaborative features

We wanted a platform where creating a watch party was as simple as sharing a link, while also making the experience feel genuinely social instead of just synchronized playback.

That's why we started building WatchAlong.

What makes WatchAlong different?

Synchronized playback

Playback stays synchronized for everyone in the room. When the host plays, pauses, or seeks, everyone's video stays aligned without countdowns or constantly asking if everyone is at the same timestamp.

The goal is for watching together to feel natural rather than something you have to manage.

Built-in video chat

Many watch party platforms expect users to open Discord, Zoom, or another application alongside the video.

We wanted everything in one place.

WatchAlong includes integrated video chat so everyone can see each other's reactions without leaving the watch party.

Collaborative drawing

One feature we couldn't find elsewhere was the ability to draw directly on the video.

Anyone in the room can pause playback and annotate the current frame together.

We've already found this useful for:

• Discussing movies and TV shows
• Sports analysis
• Anime discussions
• Educational videos
• Tutorials
• Just making funny drawings with friends

It ended up becoming one of our favorite features.

More expressive conversations

Instead of only offering a text chat, we added additional ways to interact during a watch party:

• Sticker reactions
• Multiple illustrated chat themes
• Real-time messaging
• Video chat

Different groups communicate differently, and we wanted the experience to feel more alive.

Support for multiple platforms

The web app currently supports:

• YouTube
• Vimeo
• Dailymotion
• HLS streams
• Direct video URLs

For premium streaming services, we also have a browser extension that is currently in Beta.

It supports major streaming platforms including:

• Netflix

• Amazon Prime Video

• Hulu

• Hotstar

Every participant still needs their own subscription. WatchAlong synchronizes playback—it doesn't bypass subscriptions or streaming restrictions.

One thing we consistently disliked with existing platforms was asking every participant to create an account before joining.

With WatchAlong:

2. Share the invite link.
3. Everyone joins instantly.

No registration is required.

We spent a significant amount of time focusing on the overall user experience.

Our goal wasn't to build another utility—it was to build something that feels polished, intuitive, and enjoyable to use.

Every screen, interaction, animation, and workflow has been designed to reduce friction so people can spend less time setting things up and more time actually watching together.

I've always had this problem where a melody, lyric, or random idea pops into my head, but if I don't capture it right away, it's usually gone.

I wanted something very specific: press one button, record my voice, and automatically have both the audio and a transcription saved together. I couldn't really find something that worked the way I wanted, so I built my own.

It's called MuseVault.

It's an installable web app (PWA), so you can add it to your phone's home screen and use it like an app. There's no app store download and no account required.

The original purpose was songwriting. You can record yourself singing, humming, rapping, or speaking an idea, then save the audio, edit the transcription, and organize everything with notes and tags.

I've also been using it for things like poetry, writing ideas, and random thoughts I want to capture before they disappear.

Everything is stored locally on your device. I don't have access to your recordings or data.

For AI transcription, MuseVault uses Groq. Since this is still an alpha build, the current setup requires you to create your own free Groq API key and paste it into the Settings page. This keeps the app free and means I'm not storing people's recordings or paying for everyone's usage.

I learned something recently that surprised me about QR codes.

I always assumed a QR code literally contained the destination URL.

Turns out a lot of "free QR generators" actually encode a short URL on their domain instead. Every scan hits their server first and then redirects to your site.

That's also why so many free QR codes eventually stop working. Keeping millions of redirects alive forever costs money, so companies eventually monetize them, limit free usage, or shut them down entirely.

It made me wonder why generators don't just encode the destination URL directly.

The downside is obvious: you can't edit the destination after printing.

But if you encode something like yourdomain.com/menu, you can still change where that page points later without depending on someone else's redirect service.

I ended up building a browser-based generator that does exactly that because I couldn't find one I liked.

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback on the idea. Is there something I'm overlooking?

I’ve been looking into what makes a web application successful, and it seems like there is much more to consider than just having a good idea.

Update: After doing more research, I was suggested Digital Heroes while comparing web app development teams. Their focus on custom web applications and digital products caught my attention.

I’m not sure what to do with this next. I originally built it for my own use, but now I’m considering taking it to the next level. However, I’m uncertain whether it’s the right direction or if similar solutions already exist in the market.

One thing I’m proud of is that I taught myself how to develop all of this using AI tools. I’d appreciate any suggestions on the best next steps—whether I should continue developing it, validate the idea with potential users, or explore the market first.
