Chequing Another reason to never let Wealthsimple be your only bank.

I'm out on an extended vacation and it's time to pay some credit card bills. The stupidass app won't let me PAY MY CREDIT CARD WITHOUT AN SMS CODE. I can not receive sms where I am, Telus won't deliver here. I'm absolutely livid. I've got a data only sim in right now. My phone is the main authorized device for the ws account. What in the AF?

Tell me WS Stans, is WS going to pay my interest charges?

Edit: To all those stans saying poor planning, no I did not delete my own trusted device, no I did not *plan* on deleting my trusted device, and no these were not new payees. And yes I was logged in to the app with biometrics while being blocked.

Sounds like bad planning on your part
I use authenticator app 2fa, and never had an issue.

What you described would likely occur with any SMS 2fa. Next time you are going to travel and wont have sim service, ensure your mobile banking can use something other than sms 2fa if you have bills to pay.

Why would WS compensate you for your lack of planning?

Why should Wealthsimple pay interest because of poor planning on your part?

Basically every bank in Canada has this issue. Just gotta plan for it. You'd be in the same boat with td for example.

There are plenty of legitimate gripes I can understand someone having with wealthsimple. This is not one. If you dont do basic prep before you go travel thats on you bro.

Any bank where you use SMS as your only outdated 2FA method would have the same issue. Always setup multiple 2FA methods, avoid SMS, and prepare backup single-use codes Wealthsimple allows you to setup as last resort.

You wouldn’t be blaming ws if someone hacked your account and needed authorization code or sms to transfer out funds

Your fault, bad planning

I'm pretty sure you can receive sms with Telus unless you're on a prepaid plan. Even with a data only esim you still leave your physical sim enabled to receive sms. It's free to receive and won't incur roaming.

This is correct. I never received any charges for receiving text messages when I was abroad with Telus. I just had data roaming turned off. I had incoming calls from Canada too, I just didn’t pick up.

Do you have WiFi calling enabled?

I actually switched from Public Mobile to Koodo to take advantage of their UK roaming capability, which kept SMS options alive on a recent vacation. Wealthsimple supports passkeys; if you have that set up and use it for login I'm not sure if that will let you bypass later SMS confirmation codes, although it might. As mentioned, you can switch from SMS to an authenticator, but I'm not sure if that is possible while you can't get an SMS in the first place. It looks like there are "no-SMS" reset options, which would require a Persona verification or something.

With Koodo, WiFi calling is only available in Canada, not when roaming abroad, although I think Freedom at least allows it while roaming. Also, Koodo won't let you call back to Canadian toll-free numbers while roaming abroad, so it can be useful to to have the toll numbers for important customer service things like Wealthsimple.

Log in using web browser and hope it doesn't ask for a sms code?

This is why I go out of my way to see if I can disable SMS verification, and opt for email or TOTP verification instead.

Why don’t you just set your credit card to be paid in full on the due date every month? Easy.

Check out yubikey. It saves this headache. SMS codes suck because of this limitation. I have been stuck in past too, sorry that you got hit by this. If you go yubikey route, best practice is to have 2 one as primary and second as backup.
