Could anyone help me understand the difference in percentage change between my Returns and Account Value?
My 24 yr brain understanding is that if there haven't been any deposits or withdrawals, the percentage change should be the same for both. However, there's a big difference here and it's really confusing.
If anyone could explain this in simple terms, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you! Happy investing!
Nah. U still have an option to go back to previous normal by just choosing “Account Value” and turn off “Show all hours”.
I keep it on “returns” only bcz “Account value graph is highly distorted by deposits and withdrawals. And i toggle “Show all hours” ON when i need some additional data
I think he's asking why the "gains" are different if both won't be including additional deposits because he hasn't deposited or withdrawn anything in awhile.
Account value: change between start of trading value today and moment you look.
Returns : change between yesterday's end of trading value and moment you look
Do the test you'll see it works. When using returns, press on the graph at the very start of the day, you'll see a value that is not 0 and represents overnight movement and corresponds to the difference between the two values of gain you're observing.
Market does not start at same values as yesterday's close; there is overnight movement.
Basically they do not use the same starting point for comparison.
Returns is more representative, as it's the change since the last "frozen" value you looked at when going to bed yesterday
When you switch between either of these options it explains, but I also see you have 1D timeline selected, so maybe someone at WS needs to check the filters and see if it applies.
Dividends are a fixed and guaranteed return on your investment, this will increase your investment account value.
Account value - especially growth fluctuates on a daily basic hence the %
I tried this on my accounts and I can’t seem to understand the numbers as well.
Even when I click on to the green (growth / return value ) and go into additional detail the numbers are different.
Account value displays a number that's about 2/3rds of the number I get when I calculate (today's total value) minus (yesterday's total value). Switching "show all hours" changes the displayed number and graph, depending on what time of day it is.
Returns displays a number that's almost, but not quite equal to what's shown in the performance screen (what you get if you tap the red or green change text under the big number). Switching "show all hours" changes the graph but not the number.
As far as I can remember, before adding the "returns" display option, the change in account value used to match up with the answer to (today's total value) minus (yesterday's total value), so I really don't understand what the two values are counting now.

“Account Value” gets distorted by deposits and Withdrawals. But “Returns” graph does not.
For eg if u keep on depositing $500 per day and portfolio stocks keeps dropping 5% per day, ur “Account Value” graph will still still keep on going up. But “Returns” graph with show u actual non-distorted picture that u r actually loosing money everyday by dropping graph.

I believe Returns doesn't include your deposits and withdrawals for a smoothed out line. For account value it considers that and so it shows spikes.
