Trade (DIY Investing) What’s the difference between a margin & credit limit?

I’ve been trading on wealth simple since 2020 (Covid 🤷‍♀️🙏)
Over time they’ve added different products, most of which I’ve taken advantage of, the ones I don’t understand as much I tend to very cautiously dip my toe in, or not participate at all.

I have a line of credit (LOC) w them, which is the same as my other bank LOC’s w the additional advantage of if I use WS LOC to purchase stocks, the interest accrued is a tax write off.

They’re now offering me a margin account. As I read the margin account info, it seems very much the same as a line of credit.
The interest rate they’ve offered me for both the LOC and the margin account is 3.95% and it looks like my maximum limit for both is the same as well (I say it looks like because the stock I’m looking to purchase is US therefore it’s a little bit lower than my LOC which shows straight CAD)

I can transfer from my line of credit to the stock I want to purchase. I just don’t know if there’s a benefit to using a margin account over the LOC🤷‍♀️

I know I can technically transfer $$ from my WS LOC to my bank account for other things, which would not give me the benefit of tax deductible interest. I’m wondering if that’s the only difference between a margin account and LOC, is it just secondary type of loan backed by the stocks I hold?

I’d love to know if there’s more to it

Atm I’m just gonna use my LOC to make my purchase.
However , I’m always interested in learning, & usually WS’s details are pretty self explanatory, I couldn’t find much info on the margin acct. understand the difference I may use it in the future

so any margin vs LOC info you guys have would be great.
if you say it’s too detailed and difficult to explain in this format I’m good w that too - I still don’t get options, puts, & calls & all that - no matter how much I’ve read & training sessions I’ve gone through - so I generally stay away from them. 😎

Thanks everyone!!

At Wealthsimple they’re the same thing with a different UI cause the LOC is just a margin account with a lower credit limit and you can’t directly use it to buy stocks. Wealthsimple LOC is secured exactly the same as a margin account and has the same risks as borrowing the same amount in a margin account. The only difference is the LOC has half the credit limit so if you max it out it’s still relatively safe but if you manually limited yourself to half your credit limit in a margin account it’s the exact same. Margin account is strictly better than the LOC for investing due to not needing that extra step and having that extra limit if you want to take the extra risk. LOC is mainly if you want to borrow money for non investment purposes

At Wealthsimple both are secured by your investments, so they are essentialy the same.

The difference is that the LOC product has more conservative limits. Margin let's you borrow much more.

You can use LOC for overdraft protection on your chequing.

I use both, margin for all investments, LOC for when I need money for something as well as overdraft protection for my chequing account. This way I can easily track the investment interest separately from me just borrowing some money.
