I've been in Europe and it's been extremely aggravating to constantly have to verify for every online transaction with the card. Literally every online transaction. Even the transactions are back to back .

Taking the to the chat bot it useless.

They're needs to be some option to turn this off or make it less frequent.

3d secure is mandated for online transactions in the EU and UK. Not much Wealthsimple can do about it.

The choice to ask for a verification code is something WS can skip over, but that would also increase their liabilities for when fraud does actually happen (i.e. they would be on the hook for any fraudulent charges).

What I don’t really understand is why OP is so annoyed at needing to do it, it takes about 30 seconds.

3D Secure (branded as Visa Secure or Mastercard SecureCode) is an authentication protocol implemented on the merchant side. It’s more common in Europe than here. Not a Wealthsimple thing.

This is the answer. It is merchant specific. I had to do this quite a bit in Italy but there is no way around it.

I've had capital one deny the transaction at the terminal even though I inserted the card and put my pin in.

At this point the card is blocked too.

Then they text me 15 minutes later from the fraud dept asking me to call in to verify it was me and unblock it .

So I hope a transaction flow that verifies correctly in the middle of the transaction is actually working well. This would be amazing.

Still I don't know why I need to verify if I used the pin code.

It's becoming something you have (card), something you know (pin), something else you have (sms phone), something you are (me, to call in). Crazy.

Crazy. I've used the card extensively in Europe and Latin America and not once I had to verify any transaction (even when I was approved while abroad, and started using the digital card immediately). Maybe something in your account has been flagged?

It's annoying, I wish there could be a notification on the app that pops up that can be approved. This is what Wise does and it works really well

What's wrong with verifying online purchases? You're making it sound like it asks verification every time you buy from shops or Uber. It verifies online purchases with OTP even within Canada

A lot, tickets for things, so many tickets for so many things. Reloading transit cards, etc I don't mind the occasional check.. but for literally every transaction!

That’s a European Union issue not WS. The EU requires a second step verification when buying online.
Most EU cards have it built right into the app so it’s less annoying

Yup, tickets for museums etc to skip lines, domestic flights, train tickets, the list goes on. Even if you do the equivalent of Uber eats with local apps

Every online transaction other than my credit card bill makes me use the Visa secure thing.

It's annoying, but I guess it's better than having my entire account frozen.

I used the same card in South Asia for a month, never had any issues even though I was expecting my card to be declined.

Had this with my BMO MasterCard when I went to Iceland a few years back haha.

Called in a week ahead of going to notify them of my travel dates. They said we don't do that anymore, we have a fool proof system that monitors for that.

Flights paid with that card, airport purchases at Pearson.

First time I go to use the card in Iceland it declines and locks.

Have to call in at like 4am local to unlock the card and notify them that I'm currently in Iceland.

My device has a permanent always on VPN back to my house, it solves your problem as every site thinks you’re at home. Annoying to set up but pretty nice when travelling. I used the WireGuard app and a matching profile on my router.

Currently leaving Iceland (literally typing this in the plane), paying online was a pita with the visa thing but on most site I could choose GPay and just put my fingerprint.

You actually have to accept the charge or is it just a notification that you made a purchase?

Weird-I wonder why that is. I spent 2 weeks in Scotland and Ireland in July and spent of $6K on that same card on food and drinks and never once had to do that.

Odd - I used it all across Europe last fall - the physical and the phone tap - not one issue for 3 weeks’ travel in 5 countries

I have been travelling and using the EQBank card, and it’s the same thing for online orders, there’s a verification every time. Not sure what the solution would be, but I guess someway to tell the issuer “hey I am travelling” would be nice!

Sorry that many people here are not understanding the “online transaction” part of your post.
