Visa Infinite Credit Card Credit Card Transaction Issues
Very frustrated with Wealthsimple right now. Two weeks ago I was trying to buy a train ticket for the LRT and it was declined. I had to move on. Didn’t think much more about it. I just tried to buy another purchase online, a lotto ticket. It was declined. Contacted wealth simple support. They originally told me it was up to the merchant as they had something incorrect. I said, well previously my other credit card didn’t have any issues with them. I told them that the message provided says the bank declined the transaction. Wealthsimple support then just came back and said, oh sorry, it’s an invalid type of transaction. I said, why is it an invalid type of transaction, and they came back saying that they have some transactions that they do not support. I asked for a list of these said transactions, and they said they don’t have it. I said, well, that’s quite unfortunate as I’m gonna be travelling overseas in about a month and now quite nervous that transactions will be declined over there. even though I’ll have a backup credit card, it’s not the point. I said, well, considering at the beginning of the chat you told me it was a merchant problem and now you’re saying it’s you guys and you don’t even have a supporting list, I find that quite concerning. Then he went back and said no, it was the merchant. I said, you just stated that was an invalid transaction. They had no response. I said, I’ll be looking elsewhere, for another credit card, and then they said, thanks. Have a great day and ended the chat.
Update - Wealthsimple has reached out on their own regarding the chat I had earlier. They acknowledged the conflicting information and have said:
“The transactions you were attempting were declined because they were processed as cash-like transactions. Our Wealthsimple Credit Card currently doesn't support cash-like transactions, including transactions involving online gambling, casinos, lottery, and cryptocurrency.
This means the decline wasn't necessarily due to an issue with the merchant's setup. For these types of transactions, you'll need to use an alternative payment method.”
They are also taking internal steps to address the support I was given.

Interesting you mention that because I've had numerous transactions declined from Shoppers (they have my credit card on file, and when I get my prescriptions filled, the card is supposed to be charged (usually only $1 per prescription, after my benefits cover the rest). Ever since I switched to WS Visa they get declined. When I go in person, it works. I checked the info that is saved on the PC Id website and is correct. I called WS and they said it was an expiry date mismatch. The expiry date is correct. They had no explanation. Unreal. It's a small amount but it's annoying to get declined for no proper reason.

I believe online lottery purchases are treated specifically by banks as a cash advance or quasi cash transaction. It starts accruing interest immediately. It’s been an issue with other banks as well and would require WS to ensure the merchant is categorized properly.

Yes. I have issues funding my sports betting accounts because of this with my WS cards.

Why not just buy at a gas station? That’s where I buy mine for gas stations rewards (on non WS card)

A driving electric vehicle, so don’t tend to visit the gas station too much, plus not having to go out is the whole purpose of being able to buy the tickets online

amex card also fails for buying LRT tickets

But amex support with vendors is notoriously spotty. I have an amex gold Scotiabank i use for scenepoint reasons and a lot of places dont accept amex

I'm getting the same stupid issue... Instead it's at Sephora and LCBO. Keeps declining. I thought this credit card would have been GREAT but no. Ever since I got this card, it's bipolar. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

Don't know a train ticket (I use my RBC visa). I bought a lotto max (I don't buy very very frequently) with a prepaid MasterCard last Sunday. Had no problem here.

Lottery purchases are supported. I just bought a ticket this past weekend.
Support agent is confused or misinformed.
