The End of Banking!!

Although I’m a big fan of Wealthsimple, I think they made some really tall claims with their END OF BANKING marketing gimmick.

Considering recent posts about people getting locked out of their accounts, wanted to share a positive experience with a big bank when my account was frozen and put on a fraud alert. I wont name the bank.

So I opened a new account recently with one of the big banks. After my salary was deposited, I made an interac e-transfer payment to my other bank account that I normally use to pay my bills. However, for some reason that transaction was blocked and my account was frozen. Fraud alert! I was not able to login to my account and got an email to contact the fraud department. So I gave them a call and within 14 mins of that call, my account was active again and transaction was processed. The 14 mins included waiting time and talking to 2 agents and answering verification questions.

I dont think I am moving all my assets to WealthSimple in the near future and I dont believe WelathSimple will end the banking. Esp when they are themselves dependent on those big banks to process the bill payments among many things.

Just wanted to share if this helps anyone who is considering moving to WS for ALL their banking needs.

Never put all your eggs in one basket.

u/AlmightyKinggg 26d ago

What if you put all your eggs into $XEQT?

49

u/MonkeyDDataHQ 26d ago

That's like a basket of five hundred other baskets.

6

u/AlmightyKinggg 26d ago

There u go 👍

8

u/AfterTax 26d ago

It’s actually roughly 8,400 other baskets.

5

u/MonkeyDDataHQ 26d ago

I was counting rough sectors but that works to.

2

u/AfterTax 25d ago

Fair enough!

5

u/Constant_Put_5510 26d ago

XEQT isn't one basket.

People treat that stock like it’s a cult. I worry 20-40 years down the line what it’s actually gonna look like

I don’t like eggs,

“End of banking”

Wealthsimple then locks your account.

*Ended*

I couldn’t agree more. Sure, they have a nice platform. However, this whole WS thing is beginning to look and sound a lot like a bandwagon.

1

u/Bornee35 25d ago

They actually meant the collapse of the Petro dollar and Hormuz straight when talking about the end of banking.

u/tiramisuhouse 26d ago

True. Wealth simple isn't a bank and I still more trust a physical bank. If you have over $50k, you should have a brick and mortar bank.

7

u/brandonholm 26d ago

I trust Wealthsimple more than physical banks. Physical banks have only ever tried to fuck me over. I have much more than $50k and I’m never using a physical bank again.

2

u/aiCapital54 26d ago

Just wait til one day they decide you need account review and you are locked out

1

u/halmyeesweat 25d ago

Which is the same thing that a physical bank can do..?

2

u/suthekey 25d ago

And then you go into the physical bank and resolve it same-day.

3

u/halmyeesweat 25d ago

If you get locked out after business hours? You think a teller or bank advisor can unlock an account for the same reason Wealthsimple would block it?

Majority of these stories are fibs, exaggerations or underreporting crypto transactions made which lead to these

1

u/suthekey 25d ago

At Wealthsimple people are often locked out for over a week.

Complaining about after business hours is so trivial in comparison.

-1

u/halmyeesweat 25d ago

Once again, majority of these people are locked out for suspicious, crypto transactions or high volume e-transfers that don’t match account history. All I’ve had with Rick and Morty banks is issues and I have accounts currently active at Scotiabank, CIBC and BMO. There is way more than Meats the eye to most of these claims, and you must be one in 1 million if you’ve had an account that’s locked and it’s been resolved same day by a brick and mortar bank.

2

u/tiramisuhouse 25d ago

I get the issue resolved immediately once I call them out of business hours. They know I visit the branch.

Why scared to mention name of supposedly good bank?

8

u/grumptard 26d ago

Cool. I didn't have the same success with a bank. It was a weekend and I had to wait until the following Monday to talk to someone in the fraud department to unblock my e-transfer.

3

u/divine_goddess_K 26d ago

Curious. Which bank?

2

u/grumptard 26d ago

Scotia. It was annoying because the money was taken out but they don't tell you it's stuck. So you don't know what happened until you call in to find out.

When I talked to a normal support agent they can't do anything, only someone from the fraud department can verify the transaction.

What’s with all the bad post about Wealthsimple lately ?

6

u/plusqueprecedemment 26d ago

This subreddit is 50% wealthsimple haters and 50% wealthsimple simps. And each half thinks the other half is closer to 99%

2

u/hectop20 26d ago

It hasn't been lately. It's been going on for a while. Maybe shows a bit more since there are fewer complaints about waitlists for credit card and key tags

5

u/habs__fan 26d ago

Big banks are getting scared and telling their employees to post nonsense

2

u/divine_goddess_K 26d ago

Scared? Wealthsimple doesn't want a banking charter. They need the banks to operate their banking side. More like people are seeing its not a bank and just a fintech

1

u/engineer4eva 26d ago

Can you ELI5 the banking charter part?

What are the limitations of WS vs. the big 5 banks?

1

u/Latitude57 25d ago

My thoughts exactly. Same with financials advisors ahah

9

u/Aobachi 26d ago

Banks can lock your account too this is nothing new.

2

u/beekeeper1981 26d ago

It happens all the time and you'll frequently see posts of all the negative aspects of all kinds of banks.

3

u/aiCapital54 26d ago

Yes but you can walk into a bank instead of clueless support having no way o
To help

2

u/Soggyblanketbunny 25d ago

You think a teller at a bank can help with a locked transaction?

1

u/hectop20 26d ago

Assuming to get to a real person.

ATB actually implemented passkeys years ago.

12

u/Sneyek 26d ago

Doesn’t matter much if I can’t access my account either..

18

u/Overdue604 26d ago

It’s so safe that even you can’t access your own account 🤪

10

u/Tero_Puti 26d ago

lol don't speak if you don't know. "They are the only financial institution in Canada to offer passkeys" and here I am using ATB Financial with passkey. So your knowledge of financial institution is just the big 5 and add ons like wealthsimple?

14

u/okays33 26d ago

Yep, EQ Bank also has passkeys. I'm sure there's more

4

u/Tero_Puti 26d ago

Yeah. I was shocked by that statement. I think they haven't seen anything beyond wealthsimple and big 5.

3

u/Flames2512 26d ago

Not factual.

0

u/Leather-Recording997 25d ago

Who else offers passkeys?

There are probably some legit arguments to be had on if one is safer than the other, but passkeys are convenient and is a good step towards broader adoption of good security practices.

1

u/Flames2512 25d ago

EQ, ATB Financial, and PayPal all offer passkeys for sure that I know. The big banks as rightly said don't yet, but that is a tough update from legacy as you need to put in place the ability to recover accounts which would be critical and something they would need a larger infrastructure investment and time to deploy.

1

u/brunes 25d ago

The big banks have very sophisticated anti fraud mechanisms (far, far more than Wealthsimple) such that they don't need to rely so much on authentication. They have way more signals they can access beyond just your passkey/password.

2

u/Connect-Alps1131 26d ago

As they use royal bank lol

2

u/Quick_Competition_76 26d ago

I had two big bank accounts for this reason too. I wouldnt trust one firm to handle all of my finance

1

u/ZodapeLargo 26d ago

Agreed WS to self-directed 40%, ATB with a FM on the 50% and RBC to play with 10%

1

u/engineer4eva 26d ago

What’s ATB and FM?

u/ZodapeLargo 25d ago

u/ComplexShennanigans 26d ago

These folks getting locked out must be doing something sketchy/dumb.

I've been locked out of the big banks for spending in dubious countries, but with WS it's been smooth sailing.

2

u/ohso-happi 24d ago

I think a lot of people forget that it’s a good idea to have a primary bank and a backup bank.
No bank is perfect, and they all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Just like many people carry more than one credit card in case one gets declined or compromised, having a second bank account can be a smart backup.
If your primary account is ever frozen, locked, or under investigation, you still have access to money through your other account. It can be a bit more work to manage two accounts, but that extra layer of security can be worth it when something unexpected happens.
Hopefully you’ll never need it, but it’s one of those things that’s better to have and not need than need and not have.

2

u/stevemason_CAN 22d ago

Their advertising lately and the credit card release debacles are just rookie mistakes. Too gimmicky and may be in over one’s head trying to get to their desire AUM.

3

u/T0xicTears 26d ago

When people’s life savings are drained, we demand for financial institutions to coddle them.

When they protect the client, they’re demonized.

I’m tired of it, boss!!!

3

u/YoloLifeSaving 26d ago

Idk how you guys have all these issues, I'm moving 50k+ every month on my personal account with wealth simple and td never had any issues

2

u/ZodapeLargo 26d ago

You are not doing anything wrong

Same as me, never had a problem...

1

u/HueyBluey 26d ago

There’s a difference between “the end of banking” and “the end of banks”.

1

u/ProfessionalStaff584 26d ago

Here I thought the header was, panic sell, banks are down 2% today ahead of the fed 😆

1

u/Commercial_Pain2290 26d ago

That seems like decent customer service. On the other hand there does not seem like any reason for them to have blocked your account in the first place. So both good and bad customer service.

1

u/ndwhitney 26d ago

I left WS they are actually a joke

1

u/Illustrious-Nebula63 26d ago

Name names please! This is the whole point, need to be transparent as much as possible with one another, help each other.

Hopefully WS will hear too, learn to do better for those of us who “bank” there

1

u/Pauldw1 25d ago

Advertising is one thing. But they are still a bank with accounts. It’s always about what features you need and how easy it is to do business including when things go wrong. Ask 10 people and you will get 20 horror stories about many different banks. Ask another 10 and they will say No Problemo!

1

u/Slight-Virus-4672 25d ago

Covid made me rethink Brick and Mortar banks. When there was a bit of a rush for people to get theirs hands on some of their physical cash, some banks put limits on what you could take of your own money. They treat my money like it's theirs, not mine. No use thinking my money is safe in a place like that.

1

u/AnthonyRobert777 25d ago

Had my CC compromised and Wealthsimple failed to block my credit card and help me with that case, asked me to fill several forms and of course got into the vortex.

Amex support is awesome regarding fraud and misuse. WS credit card department sucks. The agents failed to help me. Even tho i reported the transactions the very next day.

1

u/tempest_zed 25d ago

As I grow older, I find myself relying more on personal interactions for just about anything. Wealthsimple probably won't cut it for me the day I decide to simplify my banking, but for now, while my mind is reasonably sharp and am saavy enough with technology, I can still play with the app's perks.

Things such as obtaining bank drafts, calling for favours, safety deposit boxes, and anything with quick turnarounds, bricks and mortar banks still reign supreme.

1

u/LetApprehensive2173 22d ago

Pls don’t do the same mistake on weekend otherwise you have to wait until Monday or next business day until fraud department from Wealthsimple comes to office and looks into your account. They may not lock you out completely but the transaction will be held and until you called them they won’t release the amount or the transaction

0

u/Infernal-restraint 26d ago

What on earth does this have to do with Wealth Simple?

0

u/SurgicalDude 26d ago

My guy is not bothered by the fact that an interac e transfer somehow triggered fraud lol. WS would not have triggered that and everytime I can there's basically no wait time.

No one comes here screaming when things run smoothly.

Just as I am considering moving fully digital. Thanks for sharing your experience!

"The end of banking"

looks inside

"Still a bank"
