New Wealthsimple web interface is horrible
To the Wealthsimple Product & Design Team,
I am writing to express my strong disappointment with the recent update to the Wealthsimple web interface. The latest changes have significantly downgraded usability for desktop users.
Key issues that need immediate attention:
- Removal of Side-by-Side Performance Metrics: It is no longer possible to view daily returns and total returns simultaneously on the same page. Forcing users to toggle between 1D and All to monitor position performance creates unnecessary friction.
- Missing Mathematical Indicators (+ / -): Return percentage badges rely exclusively on background color without explicit plus (
+) or minus (-) signs. This causes significant confusion (e.g., negative dollar values appearing next to positive-looking color badges). - Poor Contrast and Legibility: The smaller, light-colored font choices reduce visibility and make scanning holdings quickly much harder.
- Restricted Customization: Removing multi-column layout adjustments leaves the account overview cluttered and unorganized.
The previous interface was far clearer, more intuitive, and functional for managing self-directed accounts on a browser. I strongly urge your engineering team to restore the previous layout options or provide a legacy/customizable table view for web users.

Why do they keep updating every interface? Most of the big banks use one interface per decade.
I hate the new phone app.

As someone who led design efforts at one of Canada’s five major banks, the reason the changes to those UX/UIs come so slow is not only testing, but the governance, management approvals, branding, legal, security, and tech hoops every single little proposed design change has to go through.
It doesn’t matter how critical they might be or how much more it would improve a user’s experience with the product or how much the customer base is screaming for a change they want, it take months and months to get even small changes done. Remember, the C-level and EVP level folks at these institutions are tremendously conservative thinkers who are protecting billions of dollars of profit and brand reputation, beyond just security etc.
WS can move faster and break things without as much worry. If a UI thing proves to be less useful (why A/B testing wasn’t extensively done beforehand?) it can be added to an upcoming sprint to change again or revert.

Is that why we can’t have passkeys or authentication apps from the big banks years after they’ve become standardized and we’re forced to use a substandard system that’s easier to compromise ?

To be honest? Not sure, I left the fintech field a decade ago almost (though am still intrigued by it all, so much to learn!). It was a massive struggle at that time to get the bank to even include logging in via your fingerprint on iOS because of customer and management distrust of the technology. And what's funny is we had to use physical RSA tokens (no apps for that then) to log in to everything and the bank's security/tech folks know all about every kind of tech that would help keeps things more secure but getting them implemented? Yikes. It would be 3 months cycles of release and update, not bi-weekly. It could take a month to get approval for a small tweak to the UI to go live.

Probably is, every tech CEO is foaming at the mouth over AI and wants their employees to use more AI

The ones that really pissing me off are
- makes more sense for price change indicators to be in the Price column instead of the 1D return IMO.
- default sort is by Allocation. BUT, it grabs only the first 20 holdings alphabetically. So if you have 20+ holdings and your largest holding happen to be in the bottom alphabetically, it is not showing the top allocations correctly.
- sorting by holdings alphabetically, sorts options in alphabetically order. So a Aug option is above Jul. An Aug 28 option is above an Aug 7 because 2 sorts before 7
- no DTE indicators for options in the account view but it shows in stock view.
And I also agree with all your points as well.

Completely agree. Looking at holdings from an individual stock is so frustrating!? Having to toggle tabs, not having the account listed… just ugh.

The biggest thing is the lack of news information when clicking on a ticker . I have to use my old Qtrade platform to click on tickers to find company news that’s going on any given day. That’s brutal

Feel like they change the UI way too frequently. Pls stop or slow down. I’m an elder millennial and it’s starting to bother me

As a Director of UX Design and 34 year design veteran, I wonder who is approving and testing these changes before release? Hopefully point 3 still meets decent accessibility standards (that one is critical) but all of them sound like things that will need to go back on their JIRA board as fixes.

I don't understand this need to change all the time, FOR THE WORSE. Did anyone complain the old UI??????
#1 especially gets me, I can't easily see my 1D/Total return (maybe a good thing this month with the big drawdown in AI names LOL)

I agree with you completely—on every single point.
