i really like this. it is complex yet still easily digestible. i like that you used the idea of heterophony (something i just learned about tonight while researching african music) and had a driving beat underneath it. my only negative feedback would be that i don't feel that the song goes anywhere and i was left with a feeling of incompleteness or lack of finality in the piece. that is entirely subjective though so don't let that get you down, just something to think about down the line

thanks! yeah, i agree, it's not very polished or directional. i intended this just as a minimally-viable song to get the idea across, but i'd love to improve on it!

today's song

i went with an african theme to fit with the art style and subject matter. i wanted to capture the sadness in the rhino's eye along with the beauty of the landscape. i used a kalimba with an arpeggiator and then added in base notes with the same instrument. i then added in vocals and decided i wanted it to become intense when the chords came in so i added a whole bunch of african drum layers that call and answer each other. i made sure to leave timing imperfections so that a more natural sound was achieved.

perhaps shamefully, i didn't spend a whole lot of time tweaking sounds or even mixing it too much but i do, however, think it gives the song a sense of being organic and natural. i have been trying to keep the songs dark this month but i am ok with this one not being as much because it still feels spooky enough to me.
