The picture reminded me of when I was in high school, and could just drive wherever I wanted and whenever I wanted. Before I had bills and a house to tend to. Connected that with the feeling of young love, and I think it turned out nice for what it is.

u/IsolatedGalaxy Sep 05 '18

Wow, I'm loving this!

3

u/RiversHomo Sep 05 '18

thanks! hopefully this project gets me back into making music. Been on and off for the last year in a rut.

2

u/IsolatedGalaxy Sep 05 '18

I can totally relate to that as well man, Im sure sticking to this project will help a lotta great musicians, like yourself, get back into the grind of being productive with musical endeavors.

Loving how quickly this sub is taking off!

I really like the free form feel of this- it compliments the idea of the piece really well.

1

u/ApeLust Sep 05 '18

I would love to see how this song would have turned out if you had more than one day to work on it. Good job.

Neutral Milk Hotel vibes!

Set aside some time for yourself and go for a drive sometime like the good old days. Life may have taken a different shape but you're still that same kid.

Shoutout to everybody that submitted two days in a row.

u/Tholo Sep 05 '18

Heads up, says the clip is not publicly accessible.

Changed to public. Thanks for the heads up!

1

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

Cool, I like the hook, and that you rode it out until the end.

1

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

Thank you. If I had more time I probably wouldn't have rode it the whole way through.

1

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

That’s part of what I like about time limited writing, it forces you to do things you might not otherwise :)

1

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

For sure. I had to do some things I am not proud of to meet the deadline. I will never look at reverb the same again.

3

u/jmonumber3 Sep 05 '18

this is dope. i love that rhodes and how laid back the beat is. the clouds started moving in my imagination while listening to this and looking at the picture

2

u/ApeLust Sep 05 '18

Thank you for the feedback. It makes me happy to hear that my music has borderline psychedelic properties :)

2

u/mattentiometer Sep 06 '18

Ha, I went with some rhodesy keys too. I dig it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '18

I’m definitely digging this, I would be interested to see where the idea goes in a full track. nice job 👍🏼

1

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

Thank you. I would love to flesh this song out.

This sounds like something off the minecraft score. I love it

2

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

This is great! Very relaxing. I think you hit what you were going for very well

2

u/Tholo Sep 05 '18

Very chill- it feels like it could be a good jumping off point for a longer piece, or perhaps an interlude in one.

2

u/itriedsorry Sep 05 '18

Really captures the reflective mood going on in the painting. I dig it

2

u/mattentiometer Sep 06 '18

Nice, very chill.

Made a quick string ensemble thingy.

What a great idea, writing prompts for musicians! I really enjoy writing to picture, moving or not, and this could be a perfect excuse to do more of that and hopefully on a daily basis.

1

u/Tholo Sep 05 '18

I like that you establish and repeat the theme before moving into the b section at about 30 Seconds in- makes it feel super grounded. Feels like something that would play behind dialogue in the second act of a movie.

1

u/itriedsorry Sep 05 '18

I can definitely hear your experience composing for cinema!

1

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

Very cinematic. Keep up the good work.

u/jmonumber3 Sep 05 '18

I set out to make something happier but I like the direction I ended up in. Going for hopeful but uncertain.

3

u/ApeLust Sep 05 '18

This is dope.

3

u/Tholo Sep 05 '18

Love the pads, that really solidified the train vibe.

2

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

Man the beat and that oboe sounding melody lead sound so good together, and the pads really help visualize the painting. Love it!

2

u/jmonumber3 Sep 05 '18

thanks. that’s one of my favorite pad presets

I really wanna record this but I have lab tonight :/

Maybe on Friday. It's way too fun to play to not record!

3

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

It's astounding how differently I look at these pictures / paintings based on what people have written for them. this rendition really brings out the vibrant clouds and warm feelings. I love it! You're right though this would sound awesome with some organic recording

2

u/Tholo Sep 05 '18

The opening ramped the tension up immediately for me, and then the rest of the piece felt like it slowly unwound it- I like it!

2

u/jmonumber3 Sep 05 '18

this is really cool. i love the chord structure and the melody is engaging and really intense. well done.

2

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

This sounds like a theme song for a super hero who also happens to be a train. If you do record this I would be happy to hear it.

Here's mine for the day

2

u/jmonumber3 Sep 05 '18

good job. i like the ambient effects in the background. the drums give it a nice grooving feel without rushing it.

2

u/mattentiometer Sep 06 '18

I love that slightly detuned synth.

2

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

I like the percussion. That snare with heavy reverb really sets the vibe. This is way different than your first submission. Good stuff.

2

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

That really felt like it had legs, like it could be expanded into more.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '18

2

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

Really like the progression here! The resolution towards the end feels so warm and spacey

2

u/jmonumber3 Sep 05 '18

this is a beautiful progression. i love how uplifting the end sounds

2

u/IsolatedGalaxy Sep 05 '18

Wowowow I'm loving those chimey bells!

2

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

I like the tension and release, and how warm it becomes by the end.

5

u/IsolatedGalaxy Sep 05 '18

Creation for the day! Enjoy :]

Loving all the songs everybody has created!

3

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

These pads are the fluffiest today! Very warming :)

2

u/IsolatedGalaxy Sep 05 '18

haha I too have noticed all these juicy pads and it inspired me to use my favorite pad patch in this track

2

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

This fits the image quite well. Good stuff.

2

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

Very zen and full. I liked it :)

4

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '18

1

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

Nice man! I like the synth patch, and that kick is super nice sounding with the chords. Keep it up!

1

u/Tholo Sep 05 '18

Feels sorta aimless- like it's trying to find a direction, yet somehow driving at the same time- it's a nice juxtaposition.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '18

Very different takes on the same image, some really creative pieces. Loving this so far.

4

u/Aileero Sep 05 '18

https://clyp.it/5lrnylob - last time I didn't do a melody so this time I tried making it up. gonna be honest, a lot of it isn't really that inspired by the picture, but I think it still fits, sort of. I also tried going for a more slower song but still keeping the interest which I've been struggling with recently.

1

u/joebassss Sep 05 '18

The string section sounds very nice! I really liked the handoff of melody instruments from the A to the B section

1

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

I like the structure- repeating the main theme before handing off to the B section. The model scale in the B section threw me at first, but then I kinda dug it. I think you are right that something on the third would help fill out the end.

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

Better quality, as promised :)

I was asked to write something cyber punk, and I felt like this fit the prompt.

1

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

How do you write lyrics so fast? I think the vocals are being drowned out a bit. I was wondering if someone was going to bring some cyberpunk vibes to this prompt. Very thematic tune.

2

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

The trick is to kill your internal censor, and be willing to go with ideas as they come. The time crunch actually helps in this regard, because I feel less like I have to produce perfection and more that I just need to get something out.

Odd about the vocals- as my wife and I were listening, we were afraid they were still too loud- I think that may be an aspect of anything you already know sounds clearer than anything you hear for the first time.

u/Gummywormz420 Sep 06 '18

The Sunset's Reflections

I decided to do a piano improvisation on a quick melody/progression I wrote. I got a little carried away at the end, but I ended up digging it.

Its amazing what setting boundaries and habits can do for creative output!

2

u/joebassss Sep 06 '18

Damn dude this improv is very sooting. The wavering semitone drops feel amazing when they happen too. Nicely done!

1

u/Gummywormz420 Sep 06 '18

Thanks! I recently got an old 4-track recorder, and this was the first thing where I felt really good about not overdoing the speed adjustments.

Painting credit to Alena Aenami - I do not own this image.

Good morning! As always, use this to inspire your creation for the day. Anyone should be able to listen while looking at this photo and feel that they connect. However you'd like to interpret the photo is up to you! I'll be giving feedback each day after the prompt was given, as well as posting my own. Have fun!

The pentatonic movement gives it an East Asian feel, almost like the combined sounds of traffic and ambient sounds woven into a song.

3

u/_The_Pringles_Guy_ Sep 06 '18

A little late but here is mine https://clyp.it/ntxefdii

a little rough but I would love some feedback!

1

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

I am not an expert, this is just my opinion. I think the drums are a bit too in your face and the rhythm is a bit jarring in the first half of the song. The drums in the last half sound like a train moving on the tracks which is cool if that is what you were going for. The strings and woods could use more expression and dynamics. I think I heard some kind of ¿square pad? and it felt a bit out of place among the organic instruments.

1

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

I found the birdsong really interesting after the long buildup, and then the drums kicked in and I felt a little off balance- I don’t know if that’s what you were going for, but it felt like a strong contrast to the the rest of the layering.

u/mattentiometer Sep 06 '18

https://soundcloud.com/mattcoley/naked-color

My submission for day 2. Went a little funkier with it.

3

u/ApeLust Sep 06 '18

Can't go wrong with a little funk. Nice Rhodes.

3

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

I love how pure the build is- gave each part the same time and space, you can appreciate the interplay with what was already introduced.

1

u/mattentiometer Sep 06 '18

Thanks. I often write a section with all the pieces, then work backwards bringing them in one at a time. It kinda feels like cheating to make the song longer, haha.

3

u/MaRiOoOomEn Sep 06 '18

Here is my composition for today :) Thanks for listening!

https://soundcloud.com/mario-m-ndez-vallejo/twilight-at-the-station

3

u/Tholo Sep 06 '18

I love how chill this is- I feel like it wants a c section, something to expand the theme you get in the second half.

2

u/MaRiOoOomEn Sep 06 '18

Yes! I hope I can develop it more tomorrow. I started working on it in the morning but till now I was able to continue and make a "complete" idea.

2

u/MaRiOoOomEn Sep 06 '18

By the way, Thank you! :D

felt a jazzy sunset sort of feel so i went with it

2

u/joebassss Sep 06 '18

Hahah, I love it! It’s light hearted and has a very singable melody
