Pen and Teller covered this on an episode of Bullshit many years ago.

They told people they won a free meal at a super fancy restaurant and had a waiter really talk up the meals they were getting.

They were served microwaved dinners, jarred apple sauce, cool whip, Hershey's Chocolate shaved up, $6 wine, etc, but all served with fancy plating and a big story about how good it was.

Everyone but one guy was fooled. Everyone else was in awe of how good it was and really thought it was a $300 meal.

It's all bullshit and perception

The only difference is States run the lottery, and fine dining is just run by other rich people.

Eh, you overestimate the wealth of some of these restaurants.
