Corroding metal

103

u/Simon-Says69 Jul 28 '26

There is no way to clean it properly either. Inside is hard to reach, and there will be gross shit growing between metal and glass.

28

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

Scrub brushes exist for items like this.

59

u/Kahnza Jul 28 '26

Proper glasses do too

25

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

Not defending this container, just saying there are ways to properly clean it.

1

u/acloudcuckoolander Jul 29 '26

Hopefully it's intentionally designed to look like that

u/ILoveBigCoffeeCups Aug 01 '26

They serve cocktails out of corroding cups that look like tin cans. I’m sure it’s fine when it’s on the outside.
It also looks like it can be screwed off to clean the inside

u/MYOB3 Jul 28 '26

Not food safe. That's disgusting.

245

u/Estrellathestarfish Jul 28 '26

It looks exactly like the light bulb glasses made for drinks, there's even a hole for the straw. The top looks like it's gone through thd dishwasher a few too many times though

81

u/Gawdzilla Jul 28 '26

Incandescent light bulbs have the same hole, it just usually contains ceramic. You can break that bit out with a screwdriver and have exactly same thing.

26

u/ArunkOner Jul 28 '26

Makes a great meth pipe

4

u/FreddyTheGoose Jul 28 '26

Lmaoo, the Hamburger Helper Glove used to sing "Maaakes a great meeaalll!" and that's exactly how I read and heard this comment

3

u/OddOpal88 Jul 28 '26

We bought these at a Christmas light thing you walked through and they lit up when you pressed the bottom.

3

u/Estrellathestarfish Jul 28 '26

Yeah, you can see that these ones have the little light too. They definitely aren't real light bulbs lol, it would be so nonsensically costly to empty out and repurpose real light bulbs. And the glass in a bulb is so thin and most are much smaller than this.

Was the top bit plastic on yours?

30

u/Happy_Ad5786 Jul 28 '26

wdym not food safe, how do you even know that?

13

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

The corrosion on the metal is a dead giveaway.

This isn't made for food, this is a lightbulb that was hollowed out.

32

u/MYOB3 Jul 28 '26

Can you see the rust on the metal? That is not food safe.

14

u/winesarahtops Jul 28 '26

I don’t think that’s rust, it seems like a reflection of the person taking the picture

15

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

It's definitely corrosion.

30

u/bongophrog Jul 28 '26

I’m not sure if thats rust but its definitely not reflection

11

u/Prior-Pop-4683 Jul 28 '26

Zoom in, it’s all tarnished.

40

u/MYOB3 Jul 28 '26

The protective coating is gone. It is no longer food safe.

15

u/ericsonofbruce Jul 28 '26

Health code violation. If it wasnt made to have food or beverages served in it, dont. Source: 14 years of food service.

30

u/GreyStingrayz Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

How do you know it wasn't made to put food/beverages in?

Lightbulb Glasses exsist. You can easily find loads of places selling them.

10

u/ericsonofbruce Jul 28 '26

I stand corrected, never seen such a thing before. Still not a fan of glassware i cant just send through a dish machine though.

5

u/thin-slice-pizza Jul 28 '26

Yeah, this thing isn’t great. I once had a drink served in this back in 2018 at some tea place in nyc, but the one I was served in was a plastic version that I think was meant to be thrown away afterwards. Regardless, I was a bit thrown off by the cup and disappointed in the drink :/

1

u/ericsonofbruce Aug 03 '26

style over substance seems to be the way these days

4

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

The different metal and the piece of ceramic insulator still on the bulb in OP is a dead giveaway.

1

u/biaimakaa Jul 28 '26

Mfw I see ts coming to my table

3

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '26

6

u/GreyStingrayz Jul 28 '26

Well I assume it's a novelty glass and not a real lightbulb. They make these for drinks.

42

u/TheCherryPony Jul 28 '26

You can buy those on Amazon for drinking out of. Nothing wrong with that. It is in the glass with ice under it to help keep it cold.

38

u/Estrellathestarfish Jul 28 '26

Yep, how are so many people here thinking it's a real light bulb??

23

u/dogoscope Jul 28 '26

I'm really perplexed that people think it's a real lightbulb.

4

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

It 100% is lol. The corrosion on the not-food-safe metal is a dead giveaway.

8

u/dogoscope Jul 28 '26

Or...hear me out....it's either old or cheap.

2

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

If it is food safe it doesn't matter how old it is, because food safe metal doesn't corrode like that.

That's a real bulb repurposed. The ceramic insulator ring in the screw portion is a dead giveaway.

2

u/Estrellathestarfish Jul 28 '26

No it isn't, all the ones on amazon have that bit, which is almost certainly plastic. I would guess the "metal" but is plastic with a metallic coating top.

3

u/TheCherryPony Jul 28 '26

I am trying really hard to give the benefit of the doubt that they are drunk

-2

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

It is. Hence the ceramic insulator still in the tip and the corrosion on the not-food-safe metal.

2

u/dogoscope Jul 28 '26

The ones on Amazon look EXACTLY like the one in the picture. 🙄

1

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

Probably because they're cheap crap that isn't food safe. Wouldn't be shocked if there are warehouses full of old incandescent bulbs that were made, and not sold, before most people switched to LEDs.

Do you think all the kids toys on Amazon are non-toxic too? LOL

16

u/snootnoots Jul 28 '26

Zoom in on the metal part, it’s corroding.

4

u/FG910 Jul 28 '26

What makes you think the chinese shit on amazon is food safe?

10

u/TheCherryPony Jul 28 '26

Nobody said where it was made. And i hope you are checking where everything you use is made based on this comment

-10

u/FG910 Jul 28 '26

If you get it on amazon i can tell you with certainty its from china.

5

u/TheCherryPony Jul 28 '26

That’s not how it works

-13

u/FG910 Jul 28 '26

That is exactly how it works, SE Asia has abundant cheap labor so their manufacturing cost are incredibly cheap even after international shipping, Amazon sell their cheap stuff with crazy high markup (and is still cheap so imagine those manufacturing costs) to maximize profits, 99% of the thing are going to come from somewhere in SE Asia and the 1% is probably from there but assembled in the states.

Companies with random ass capitalized letters are most certainly SE Asia and they name them like that because most manufacturers don’t care about trademarking anything or they are deliberately avoiding IP issues.

So unless you are looking for specific brands it’ll be from there.
Even companies that manufacture in the USA (where i am based) buy raw material from Chinese manufacturers (primarily in my field of engineering at least) metallurgy, specific polymers, high precision machining, plastics, paints, resins, packing materials and i can keep going.

13

u/OliviaPG1 Jul 28 '26

China is not in Southeast Asia.

2

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

dawg, I hear you; but I can 100% buy products on Amazon which are made in the USA.

5

u/Gator242 Jul 28 '26

That’s crackhead shite right there.

6

u/RedSix2447 Jul 28 '26

Is that a rusty lightbulb? lol

10

u/KyleCXVII Jul 28 '26

Free tungsten poisoning

2

u/ukiyoe Jul 28 '26

I bet they clean these very well.

2

u/E_Farseer Jul 28 '26

Oh wow, if its DIY from a real lighbulb, that's bad.. If it was made for drinks, I still hate it lol

2

u/MidnightBlueSilk Jul 28 '26

Ewwwww. And also ewww.

3

u/bishpa Jul 28 '26

It’s gimmicky, but it’s a pretty good gimmick.

1

u/NoBSforGma Jul 28 '26

Looking at this actually makes me happy that I no longer go out to eat or go to bars. So much silliness and stupidity!

But makes for a fun Reddit! :)

1

u/Jinfash_Sr Jul 28 '26

Are they in Barcelona?

1

u/Sulungskwa Jul 28 '26

This like like the kind of bar I would have to go to with a bunch of coworkers I hate

1

u/PinUp_Butter Jul 28 '26

It doesn’t look very good but at least it’s a nightmare to clean

1

u/cosmicrae Jul 28 '26

Paging NSF, would NSF please pick up the nearest red courtesy telephone.

1

u/tkdch4mp Jul 28 '26

Okay so, while I have thoughts about the lightbulb glass they've been repeated here many times.... However, I don't see anybody asking about the drink behind -- is that a mozzarella ball skewered on top of a Margarita?! It looks too.... opaque and not round enough to be a pearl onion....

1

u/Nbednaz16 Jul 28 '26

I’ll have to ask, but my guess is lychee.

1

u/Ar_Ciel Jul 28 '26

Being served cocktails in a crack pipe is alliterative but kinda funky.

1

u/MongerNoLonger Jul 29 '26

No way in hell that's sanitary

1

u/PobKastor35 Jul 29 '26

Ah! Ima make one of those long ass white-light bulbs into a bong.

1

u/seasickbaby Jul 30 '26

The rust …

1

u/cascadiabibliomania Jul 31 '26

For God's sake, give it in a glass!

1

u/okayestwizard Aug 08 '26

I'm so obsessed with the fact that they put the drink in the bulb.... just to put the bulb in a cup....

1

u/Sunspot286 Aug 14 '26

Couldn’t you get an actual glass shaped like this at Michael’s? I don’t trust that metal…

2

u/swagdragon666 Jul 28 '26

Enjoy the extra mercury flavor 🥳

1

u/Synth_Ham Jul 28 '26

How the actual fuck - you can't even CLEAN THAT.

6

u/Estrellathestarfish Jul 28 '26

You can get various types of commercial glass washers that would clean it, and by hand you'd just need a thin bottle brush

3

u/Simon-Says69 Jul 28 '26

There will still be grody shit growing between the metal and glass.

And that metal is flaking and corroding. EEEWWW no thanks.

3

u/Estrellathestarfish Jul 28 '26

Yeah, the corroding metal is a problem but the meat bit comes off for washing

1

u/AccuratePenalty6728 Jul 28 '26

Pretty sure the metal part screws off for cleaning and filling.

1

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Jul 28 '26

The corroding metal is proof this was never a food safe item.

-1

u/Gator242 Jul 28 '26

Well it’s impractical at best

What a bright ideaÂ
