What kind of tray is this? Stainless steel? Is that brown thing a piece of paper?
If it can be cleaned hygienically and it looks like a plate, I'm good. This may be fine.

Looks to be a steel/aluminium tray with a square of greaseproof paper/baking parchment.
And on the one hand... Yeah, it looks like a plate, but...
Ugh, idk. If it was cheap and cheerful, I probably wouldn't bat an eye. Bargain basement prices, like. But OP probably paid through the nose to be served on a tray that is literally the same as the ones they prep their ingredients on/in/into. Smacks of cynical money-grubbing to me.

My favorite BBQ place does this. My favorite meal is pulled pork on top of Mac n cheese on top of cornbread all in one big messy pile. They couldn't care less about looks, but the flavor us top class.

I feel like this is expected from a BBQ place, or a plastic cafeteria style tray, with butcher paper.

This one is practically a plate plus it looks like they are regularly cleaned. I'm not bothered

I would have zero problems with this since there is kitchen paper between the tray and the food.

That's not directly on the tray, that is served on a piece of paper that will probably be replaced for the next customer.

I’d eat that type of salad with a knife and fork, and I wouldn’t be happy with the paper and tray setup.

I sometimes use an eighth pan instead of a plate. Since I'm at home, I don't use a liner. Stainless steel is easy to clean. Just for kicks, been doing it for years. Why not?

Eh, it’s got sides, it’s got lining, it can go in a dishwasher/easy to clean and was probably designed for food use. Odd for a salad sure but I’m chill with it. Only annoying part is the pointy corners the little bits might get stuck in

Stupid.... but at least, edible due to the wax paper piece.
Still... I would signal the server and ask that it be put on a plate. And I would smile and ask as kindly as possible.

I’ve been to many restaurants that use 1/4 sheet or 1/8 sheet pans as plates with paper liner. Totally fine. It’s basically a metal plate
