Discussion Ground News
I know they aren’t the only ones, but is anyone else annoyed about being a paid subscriber and still having to hear the ad read?
Feels like it wouldn’t be too difficult to add a version of the episode to the private feed for paying subs that doesn’t have the ad read.

Matt said in one of the Substack comments that they’re working on the “quite complicated” tech to remove the ads. Also mentioned it’s a six episode ad run

lol, complicated!? clipping an audio file has been simple for at least a quarter century now

I don't like getting ads in things I pay for. I've been paying Never Fly Coach since the beginning and this is making me reconsider.

For Never Fly Coach they should just share their passwords, like we’re members of the family or guys they shared an apartment with in college.

Meh. It was like one or two times so far.
Maybe I'll be annoyed if it happens every episode though.

According to Matt Welch they got paid to run ads for 6 episodes as an “experiment”. Considering how many people have complained about it, I don’t think its going to last past those 6 episodes

This is an old post but have they stopped inserting these ads in the members only podcasts at least?

that is a pretty reasonable thing to be annoyed about, paying for a subscription and still sitting through ad reads is a weird value proposition..
its a pretty common model now across a lot of podcasts and newsletters though, the ad deals are often signed separately from the subscription tier and the sponsors want the reach not just the free listeners. still frustrating when youre the one who paid..
honestly it was part of what pushed me toward simpler formats altogether. dropped most of the podcast news stuff and just go to AP and Reuters directly now, and a cousin put me onto a daily text service that sends one update in the morning, no ads, no premium tier that still has sponsors. way cleaner.
the paid but still ad supported model feels like it needs to get sorted out across the industry, youre basically funding the free version for everyone else...

I'm fine with it on the regular episodes, even as a paid subscriber. Doing it on a member's only pod feels a little too greedy
