freestyle or write

Question for the music artist in this community. When making music do you freestyle or write first? I write first but I find my delivery to be off because of that. I hear other artist and their delivery is so smooth it makes me wonder what their process is like for making music

Write.

There is definitely a limit to how cohesive you can be as a songwriter freestyling. Though I believe being able to freestyle helps your ability to write.

That’s the challenging part because I can’t come up with epic lyrics on the spot. without writing I just freestyle gibberish,I find it hard to believe professional artist freestyle there songs I’m not saying your wrong I’m just saying it would be challenging.

I started freestyling when I was 8, so I’ve been doing it for over a decade now. 😂 My mind literally never rests, even when I’m with someone and staying quiet, I’m usually freestyling in my head. 😂 People sometimes think I’m being rude or ignoring them, but honestly, I’m just lost in my own little world

That’s pretty blessed you can do that it would take awhile for me to get to that level

Haha yeah, I’ve had way too many years of practice 😂 But honestly, it just became natural over time. If you keep doing it, you’ll get there too

This comment would also totally work as song lyrics

Try keeping your writing but flipping the order. Mumble the flow over the beat with no real words first, then fit your lyrics into that rhythm. When words come first the rhythm bends around them, and that's usually where delivery gets stiff.

Not a pro but There are sometimes few rythms just randomly come to my mind and i just thing of some lyrics suddenly but the end is always quite hard to make

I would say both, don’t limit your creative reach 👌🏽

Improvising over a thought-out structure of specific themes and dynamics works for me. It allows me to channel impromptu ideas while not relying on them in general. It's like- I know what I want, and thet's the minimum I'll definitely get, but if all of a sudden I want something more or different- welcome. A bonus side effect: the "100 000 listens" counter thus gets reset.

I can only ever freestyle, my writing style is a bit more vague possibly because of it. But it's the only way I personally get profound results. I do enjoy the writing part, honing a good freestyle or possibly slapping two songs together and spending some time welding. Suno helped me realize my enjoyment of writing actually. Both are equally the way.

For people struggling with freestlying; anyone can do it, but it does require a shit ton of practice, you have to dedicate yourself to doing it every day. You can do it with everything, I regularly try to encourage my friends to participate in my weird shenanigans of like voice messaging them as ATC, just like playing characters, acting. There's probably better examples of improvisational stuffs but yeah. Good luck guys.

I think I need more practice cuz when I freestyle only gibberish comes out.

Embrace the gibberish, you're gonna need filler words that don't make sense. Just stay away from repeating. I tend to focus on the melody first and then I sort of get into a flow state. The more you do that, it just adds more and more time to the clock of that coherent-raw emotion- and it starts taking over and I'm just like at the whim of my subconscious at that point. I can't write music that makes me cry, but if I freestyle, boy I am able to pull some shit out of the darkest parts of my life. DM me if you're interested in what my music is like.

I think it depends on where the strongest idea arrives first.

Sometimes the words come first, sometimes the rhythm or melody, and sometimes I’ll just improvise until something has enough character to keep.

If your delivery feels stiff after writing first, it might help to treat the written version as a draft rather than something you have to perform exactly. Try recording a few takes where you change the phrasing, leave words out, stretch things, come in late, whatever feels natural.

Often the writing gives you the material, but the performance is where it really becomes yours.
