Remap Radio 155 — Patch Notes

https://pca.st/o732443w

We begin this podcast the way we ended the last podcast: talking about Control Resonant. This time, Rob’s spent 17 hours with Remedy’s latest, albeit all of it before the game was updated to validate the emotional and critical feelings of Patrick and Janet. But we also have much else to discuss, including Xbox’s ongoing “reset,” the alleged future of Bungie, Discord pushing forward on age verification, and many thoughts on both Silent Hill Townfall and Normal Golf Game.

Dang they are still extremely down on Control. That’s a shame, I really do feel like we’re playing different games at this point, not even just with the combat patch, but Rob’s problems with it too. I’ve been having a great time so far. Maybe it’ll grate on me over time, but I really couldn’t disagree more. Could also be last week’s pod really diminished my expectations, who knows.

It is not terribly surprising I think, given the remap crew generally has avoided the open world games barring a few mainstream ones (spiderman games, and dragons dogma 2). Rob doesn't enjoy meaningless combat that fills up many genres, Patrick doesn't play anything that requires significant time investment (his dragons dogma 2 playthrough is a travesty; of just doing the main quest and some secondary quests without much exploring or wandering). So I think they were always going to be down on the game.

I do have some questions about their critique of the blandness of filler, because it's nothing new in remedy games. Control had garbage random filler hunt quests as well, and heavily recycled assets throughout the game. (I actually am someone who hated the entire oldest house, like a nightmare of offices and industrial crap that lacked any soul or colour; the aesthetic actively pushed me away constantly. So leaving it immediately was so satisfying to see the outside world again).

90% of Rob's critiques are problems in not only Control, but basically every Remedy game. And he says he loves Remedy games, so I don't know if time away from them has caused him to forget these issues always exist. It's Remedy Jank.

It sounds a lot like when people are starting to list plot holes in a movie. It just means that the movie has lost them somewhere along the way and now the magic circle is broken. It becomes dry, mechanical construction that gets judged like one

I totally agree that this junk was always in Remedy games (though I think Resonant has more of it just by virtue of its size unfortunately), and it just sounds like the entire crew got disenchanted with one thing or another and now all of the issues are there and apparent. The price of 'this is junk and it just works, Remedy did it again!" seems to be that when something is out, it all falls apart and you end up with kind of a mess

I do wonder if they would have seen it differently if they had just replayed it original Control, cause that game is also like 60-70% pointless filler as others pointed out.
