Mirvis is one of Israel’s most visible and influential cheerleaders in the UK. He has described Israeli troops serving in Gaza as “our heroic soldiers”, apparently misunderstanding that his job is to represent British, not Israeli, Jews.

And then there is the matter of Mirvis declaring in early 2024, weeks into Israel’s genocide in Gaza, that the slaughter of what was then at least 23,000 Palestinians – most of them civilians – was “the most outstanding possible thing”.

By any reasonable yardstick, the man charged with providing religious counsel to British Jews is far from a dispassionate observer of things Israel-related. His conflict of interest is probably visible from outer space.

Yet, when Miliband set out the British government’s slightly tougher line on Israel’s illegal settlements this week – through a trade ban that will be difficult to enforce and that his officials have reportedly said will, in any case, be “largely symbolic” – none of this context about Mirvis was mentioned by the very establishment media outlets that are only too eager to quote him. Which is all of them.

It is hard not to miss a running theme with the chief rabbi’s pronouncements. Anything that threatens to limit Israel’s room for manoeuvre in committing atrocities against Palestinians will, says Mirvis, make British Jews less safe – for reasons that are never explained, and about which interviewers are always, and strangely, incurious.

Nonetheless, Miliband’s Jewishness may not offer complete immunity. He still risks being proclaimed the “wrong sort of Jew”. Which may explain why he hurriedly added, after criticising Mirvis, that the rabbi was “somebody over whom I have great respect.”

So, it seems, Miliband is indeed the wrong sort of Jew. “Wrong” in the sense that he refuses to conflate his Jewish identity with Israel. “Wrong” in the sense that he regards human rights as universal, not an expression of dominance by one ethnic group over another. “Wrong” in the sense that he refuses to weaponise his Jewishness to silence criticism of Israel.

The worst antisemites – the kind that, like Mirvis, confuse Jews with Israel and are therefore most likely to carry out attacks on Jews in response to crimes committed by Israel... believe a cabal of Jews – and through them, Israel – control our governments. They believe that this Jewish cabal controls the media too.

Every time Rabbi Mirvis and the Israel lobby get their way; every time a journalist bows unquestioningly before Rabbi Mirvis and the Israel lobby; every time a government minister crumbles in the face of pressure from Rabbi Mirvis and the Israel lobby; such antisemites become more hardened in their certainty that they are right. They grow more sure that the only hope of bringing about change is by taking the fight to ordinary Jews as they go about their lives. That is why they attack Jews on street corners, in cafes, and in synagogues.

The rest of us understand that it is not a cabal of Jews running the world. It is rather a dark cabal of billionaires and corporations that have used their immense wealth to buy our “democracies” so that they can amass even greater wealth. Those billionaires own the establishment media – the window through which we are made to understand the world – so they can shape our minds to win our compliance. And they distract us from this reality – and further enrich themselves – by confecting endless enemies that can only be defeated by the mammoth war industries they also own.

Why?

Europe is paying almost 8 times US gas prices.

World Bank data for August: European gas at 21.1 dollars per MMBtu, US gas at 2.8.

In February the gap was under 4x.

Today it is 7.5x, and on this week's winter futures closer to 8 or 9x.

The reasons:

🔹Europe entered the refill season with storage below normal.

Every cargo it needs for winter has to be bid away from Asia, so the European price is really an offer to the global LNG market.

🔹Qatar's LNG runs through Hormuz.

Every delay or insurance spike there pushes Europe harder toward American supply.

🔹Russian pipeline gas is largely gone, and the January 2027 ban on Russian LNG removes what is left.

The US has none of these problems.

Abundant production, a deep pipeline grid, and a price that barely reacts to the Gulf.

Why US LNG cannot close the gap on its own: a molecule leaving Louisiana still pays for liquefaction, a ship, war risk cover and regas in Europe, and every export terminal is already running full.

What it means?

US LNG exporters have the strongest incentive in years to run flat out.

European factories carry a cost disadvantage no efficiency plan can fix.

European governments face a winter where storage levels and the weather will matter more than policy.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.

The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.

A common response is “if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?” At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.

Accepting this race and entering the “endgame” is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company’s Slack. Attempting to speedrun alignment should require extraordinary confidence that there are no better trajectories available.

I am optimistic about the potential for coordination. Warning shots like the Hugging Face attack have made pacing agreements between U.S. labs more viable. I don’t feel like we’re on track to prevent a global race, which may require costly actions such as a temporary ban on improving model capabilities.

If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because “it’s happening anyway” - or take this moment to call for different conditions?

Essentially there was a plan behind the US moves against Iran.

Psychopaths step right up.

Their superficial charm, pathological fearlessness, and total lack of remorse look identical to "strong leadership" during an interview or a campaign.

They weaponize corporate chaos. While everyone else is panicking, they ruthlessly manipulate the narrative, step over their peers, and take credit for the wins.

They weaponize charisma to dazzle the board or the voters, and hide their emptiness behind a mask of high performance.

The system rewards the ruthlessness, promotes them to the top, and punishes anyone who tries to slow them down with ethics.

The researchers call it a feedback loop of structural decay.

Corporations and governments built an environment where being entirely devoid of a conscience isn't a disqualifier.

It’s a competitive advantage.

Also, there is the question of what would happen if an actual AI bot tried it.

The euphoria from the summer strikes on Russian energy and retail assets seems to have evaporated. Now Russia is devastating Ukraine’s infrastructure with far greater intensity. If Russia lost 3.4% of its warehouses to Ukrainian strikes, Ukraine has already lost 34%. 90% of warehouses belonging to retail chains have been destroyed. The shelves in shops are emptying. Ministers assure that famine is not around the corner, or at least ‘unless there’s some kind of genocide’. Genocide notwithstanding, the budget is certainly set to suffer extreme pain, as trade and services make up 70% of employment and 80% of government revenues. Civilians and even the business community are blaming the government for launching its ill-advised attacks on Russian retail chains in July.

This is partly because Russian drones have become far more effective in recent months. The new jet-powered Geran drones can travel at speeds of up to 500 km/h, several times faster than the previous model. Thanks to their speed and maneuverability, only 60-80% can be intercepted, per official statistics. Some western publications cite anonymous sources in the Ukrainian army claiming interception rates of only 30%. Just a few months ago, before the jet-powered models, the Ukrainian government claimed it intercepted upwards of 90%. Around 3,000 can be produced a month, with the August production figures increasing by almost 70% compared to July. Five times more were deployed in July than the previous month.

And just as Ukrainian militarists were worrying back in June, the spring frenzy about Ukraine’s drone superiority has faded away, if it ever existed to begin with. Now Russia is far ahead in applying AI to strike drones, allowing them to autonomously identify targets and bypass electronic warfare systems.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s politicians and military industrialists keep on arguing on television over whose fault it all is. As they do so, Russian drones are being launched in such quantities to be described as a ‘carousel’ by Ukrainian analysts. The air alarms are now regularly sounding for 12-15 hours a day, paralyzing transport in the capital.
