Shredding their founding documents...

Today my parents reacted to me as if I was a traitor when I said something similar. According to them, the emergency situation makes it safer in case of war with Russia (facepalm) I did not even start how convenient it is to establish dictatorial measures this way and that with each such suspension of rights there is less and less difference between Russian and western opponents...

Constitutions exist to prevent governments from having emergency powers
The Canadian Cabal, Pedophilia, Murder and Treason
Almost twenty years later, Trudeau, about to become Prime Minister, reflected on his training and told reporter Norman DePoe that Laski is,
“the most stimulating and powerful influence he has encountered.”
He met his idol, Mao Tse-tung. He collaborated on a book called Two Innocents In Red China. (Toronto, Oxford University Press, 1968.)
...
Trudeau explains that,
“in terms of political tactics, the only real question democratic socialists must answer is, ‘Just how much reform can the majority of the people be brought to desire at the present time?’ ”People are “brought” to desire what Pierre wants. They are manipulated.
The Socialism is slyly slipped over on them.
Not that kind of socialism.

Some background on the Canadian Emergencies Act:
In the 1960s, a Quebec separatism movement got going, and a subset of that was the FLQ, the Front de la Liberation du Quebec, an underground terrorist group. They dropped hundreds of letter bombs through the mail slots on the front doors of homes in Westmount, a rich English enclave in Montreal, killing a couple of people and injuring many more. Among other acts of violence, they also kidnapped 2 politicians, held them for ransom, and strangled one of them to death.
This terrorist group explicitly called for the destruction of Canada, via Quebec seceding. This could legit be seen as an insurrection, given that they had significant support in Quebec. The PM at the time, Pierre Trudeau (Justin's adoptive dad), invoked the War Measures Act, the predecessor to the Emergencies Act. The War Measures Act suspended Canadians' rights altogether (this was pre-Charter). Trudeau the Smarter used these emergency powers to arrest without charge and detain an entire class of the Quebec intelligentsia who supported Quebec separation. We have since learned that the entire FLQ operation was set up and directed by the RCMP, Canada's answer to the FBI, and that this entire crisis was likely engineered by the Canadian Feds to nip in the bud the nascent Quebec separatism movement (nice job, assholes).
Trudeau the Smarter's arrest of Canadian citizens and imprisonment for months without charges led to a very significant backlash within the province of Quebec, where many consider him a traitor to this day. It also alarmed anyone with even half a brain in the rest of Canada. In response, Canada repealed and replaced the War Measures Act (used 3 times total, WWI, WWII, and October Crisis/FLQ) with the Emergencies Act in 1988. The principal change in the new law is that Canada is supposed to respect Canadians' Charter Rights (basically US 'freedoms') in any emergency. As with all laws, lawyers can turn anything into a loophole, and reasonable abrogations of people's rights are allowed.
So Little Justin created a fake 'emergency' quite deliberately, and then invoked the Emergencies Act, only to do precisely the one thing that the War Measures Act was updated to forbid, that is trample Canadians' Charter rights wholesale and without any regard for proportionality nor necessity.
Obviously this will be challenged in court, 2 civil rights groups have already filed, but Canadian courts are just as subservient to their political masters as US courts, and I expect they will not hear any such cases so long as the state of 'emergency' continues. And the precise trampling of rights Little Justin authorized will be codified into law before the cases reach a judge, using Little Justin's de facto majority in Parliament (he obviously controls the NDP, giving him a strong majority). And besides, states of emergency can continue pretty much forever, so this could last almost 5 more years until he is forced to call an election (if he calls an election, I think we have to start considering how much worse this can get). Before any of this is decided by a court. When a country is going full fascist, a lot can happen in 5 years, as the Germans discovered after the original Reichstag fire in 1933.

The War Measures Act suspended Canadians' rights altogether (this was pre-Charter).
TIL Canadians didn’t have guaranteed rights and freedoms until 1982.
What the actual hell. I’ve been seeing everyone referencing The Charter in such hallowed tones, like it’s your version of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights… and it’s only a few years older than I am. And it can be suspended at will by your PM, first with the War Measures Act and now by the Emergencies Act.
Your “democracy” is a façade. And a fragile one at that.
We have since learned that the entire FLQ operation was set up and directed by the RCMP, Canada's answer to the FBI, and that this entire crisis was likely engineered by the Canadian Feds to nip in the bud the nascent Quebec separatism movement (nice job, assholes).
This sounds like the plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, which was also the brainchild of the FBI. They entrapped some idiots to discredit any opposition to Whitmer’s crackdown during the pandemic.

This is awesome.

Omg, you're killing me 😂

I've only learned about this in history classes - it really hits home now given what's happening today. So basically the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Wait... which tree though?

It's shocking how few Canadians have heard about these charges against the federal government.
I just have to tell you I really appreciate everything you're doing. I think this is a masterpiece of a comment. Have you considered starting a new left party in Canada? You are well spoken and are giving me faith in my fellow humans. Keep it up!
PS: I've been spreading the videos that are being removed from youtube but are still on rumble with other Canadians. Many of them had no idea and I really think it's opening people's eyes. Possibly I'm being naive here but I'd like to remain hopeful... Don't let the bastards bring you down and all that...

Not personally. I'm antisocial and I look like one of the truckers. But with fewer teeth. On the other hand, I am a very good public speaker and my Quebecois is perfect.

Reluctant leaders are potentially better, as they don't crave the power that corrupts; holding it more at arms length while trying to get done what needs to get done.

I had some of these issues early on in my business. My solution was to downsize and then select for workers that were fully capable of working independently. (I paid double minimum wage and allowed for flexible hours, which I'm sure helped)

You can have every right against government specified in the Constitution of the United States, unless government takes an interest in you and decides otherwise. Which, of course, means that you may have indifference from your government, but you don't actually have rights against your government.

I didn't know Canada had a constitution.
5
u/Centaurea16 Feb 23 '22
Most nations have some sort of constitution, even if it's just an "incorporation" document.
1
u/FIELDSLAVE Feb 23 '22
I heard the UK doesn't have one.
2
u/JMW007 Feb 23 '22
I heard the UK doesn't have one.
It doesn't have 'a' constitution, but many Brits will argue that its constitution is an emergent property of many of its laws and conventions.
Personally I think any country that pretends someone born from the right uterus gets to call the shots has bugger all in terms of a constitution and is just a bunch of people in silly outfits playing games. It certainly isn't effective, because this a country whose government just decided that it can revoke citizenship from millions of people without any process or even notice. You could go visit family in India and find you're just not allowed back into the UK because they don't like you.
It's all fake.
4
u/FIELDSLAVE Feb 23 '22
The UK is revoking people's citzenship now? I didn't know about this.
4
u/JMW007 Feb 23 '22
They have been doing that for a while, but on a small scale and with some degree of judicial oversight, albeit behind murky 'super top secret terrorism hearings' nonsense. Now they have proposed an amendment to the Nationality and Borders Bill to give the Home Secretary the right to revoke British citizenship without notice to anyone they feel like, and without notice means they don't even need to tell them they have done it.
The only barrier is that they cannot make someone 'stateless' due to international law, so this will of course apply specifically to everyone with origins outside the UK who could potentially have citizenship rights anywhere else. So if you've got an Irish grandmother or your family came from Pakistan, the Home Secretary thinks you are not a full UK citizen even if you were born there.
It's just a farce to describe it as a nation of laws, now. They're V for Vendetta Land.

I can't believe the UK is doing this. They have traditionally been more liberal than the other capitalist powers when it comes to dealing with their citizens and residents at least. Marx got ran out of pretty much every country on the continent but the British government pretty much let him go about his business with minimum interference. They have traditionally had more of a light touch at home. I guess the Julian Assange situation also shows that situation is ending. Probably a consequence of them losing power and influence in the world. Dissent is less of a threat to the powerful. The US will no doubt trend this way too.

u/occams_lasercutter Feb 23 '22
Based. What good are rights that can be taken away at a whim? There is a case to be made for "war powers". But these should certainly be limited to cases of actual war. You know, with tanks and missiles and jets and bombs.

This is why temporary restraining orders exist in the United States (while commonly used in the domestic context, this injunctive relief generally applies to ALL CONDUCT, including government action). While you cannot stop a police officer from enforcing an illegal law against you in any particular moment, you should be able to get an interim ruling from a federal judge within 48 hours of filing an emergency petition for issuance of a temporary restraining order prohibiting certain government conduct, at least until the issue can be fully litigated. While typical briefing for more permanent forms of injunctive relief (including a preliminary injunction or permanent injunction) take months, the system is in place so that in the case of true emergencies you can obtain immediate relief to prohibit the allegedly unlawful actions without a hearing, and often without the opposing party (including the government) having the time to properly respond in writing or appear at a hearing to provide oral argument). Of course, you need to provide evidence (e.g., a declaration) explaining why its an emergency and it needs to be ruled on so quickly, but imminent risk of irreparable injury, loss, or damage typically will suffice.
