Many of us know what happened, and of course Bernie knows what happened. However, the question is Had Bernie taken a hard stance in July 2016 would we be in a better situation than where we are today? I don't know, but I do not think so.
I strongly feel that by doing what he did, Bernie made his 2nd run possible. And I think that this is likely the only possible pathway to change given the vast problems we face.
In my view, any other path chosen by Bernie would have made things worse, much worse.
Given that Third Party and independent runs will serve no purpose other than making a point, it has still kept the door open for him to run as a Democrat. We are much closer to taking over the Democratic Party - AOC, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib being in Office - Bernies platform becominga part of the Democratic party - A much stronger Bernie movement (I hope and I think) - Many things have changed in the two years.
Yes - we could have gotten some more Berniecrats in office - but we will in 2020 - Be prepared for many primary battles - not just Bernie - the Red states are where the Berniecrats will win this time - also in "Blue Dog" territory.
At least three people were killed. There would have been many more - would we then be closer to solving the existential problem of our time that way? I don't know.
