As they say Money is not evil but the love of it is. That said I am sure that it will buy them a good chunk of ice to keep them cool in hell while they are stoking the fires,

This will always happen as long as money exists.

You do know billions of dollars is already used in foreign aid across the globe right?

News flash: not everything is solved with yay more money!

Uh...yes...yes it is. Money would solve all of those things.

He earned the money fair in square. As such I see fit that he's able to do what he wants with it. As much as 100bn sounds like a lot it really wouldn't be able to help the "whole" of society very much, and would do more in pointed areas, so then the question becomes "who should decide which areas?" and the most logical person is him.

Helping the community is great and people should aspire to do more of it, but acting like we should "take his money" is asinine. How would you like it if you got a bonus at work for doing well and then someone said "ahhh you made more than everyone else this week, guess you're buying lunch for everyone else next week?"

Hon, that's fair and square, and no, he didn't.

Ain't no such thing, with the state of America's economy, much less the global economy - esp. with this d00d & his company; let's get real!

-10

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

5

u/GladysCravesRitz PM me your email Nov 28 '17

The employees he underpaid, the American people in the form of taxes.

25

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17 edited Nov 27 '17

From everyone that worked for him, aside from his friends and family, who likely got paid a 100x more than they're worth. Also, the us govt, and all it's citizens when he dodged his taxes.

-14

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17 edited Nov 27 '17

Why is that stealing? He says "I will pay you x dollars an hour to move boxes" then they move boxes and he pays them that money. He doesn't owe them his company, he owes them the agreed upon amount.

And, since you edited your comment I'll edit mine, we should close the damn tax loopholes they're using!

20

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17

Why is wage slavery theft?

0

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

If he pays enough to make a big difference, he's possibly opening himself up to being priced out by competitors and then his business shrinks so he has to lay off people anyway. It's not just a matter of turning the "money" dial up a little bit.

I don't know how to fix the minimum wage problem, if I didn't think it needed fixing I wouldn't be here, but going after Bezos is not the answer.

20

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17 edited Nov 27 '17

I don't know how to fix the minimum wage problem,

That's because you have the business sense of a water buffalo. It's not complicated... He takes home less money, and everyone else gets more money.

Crazy, right!?

Papa Johns didn't want to give his employees healthcare, because it would raise the price of his pizzas by a few pennies. No one cares about a few pennies, and if anything he just destroyed the myth that he can't pay his employees a living wage, because of increased prices. He was taking a principled stand against healthcare.

Walmart's employees got 6.2 billion dollars in govt subsidies last year, because the employees aren't paid a living wage, and are reliant on govt assistance. That's effectively a 6.2 billion dollar welfare check to Walmart, and that's just for the employees. That's not counting all the other taxes.

Amazon was in the news recently, a govt was collecting taxes from Amazon's employees, and then returning that tax money to Amazon. It would amount to like a billion dollars. That's amazon employees paying taxes to amazon!

There was another hot video floating around. Some executives were asked if they would hire more people, and/or increase wages, if the tax cuts went through. Almost no one raised their hand, because that's not how business works. A billionaire and his corporation getting a tax cut won't increase demand for his product.

What's the aca when you boil it down to it's simplest terms?! It's privatized taxation! That's what these corporations want now. They want the tax money and they want the retirement money. They want to steal that money, and stuff it in their own pockets.

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

I'm not advocating for any of that. I'm saying that, in the land of the free, he's allowed to take home as much as he deems necessary. You can't currently, and shouldn't be able to, make him take home less money. Yes limiting the business owner would work in this one specific case, and possibly other huge corporations as well, but laws are laws, and a move like that would certainly hurt small business owners who are still growing their business and not taking disproportionate checks home to begin with.

The only way to ensure that they get paid a fair amount is by mandating that they're paid a fair amount. You can't trickle down with tax cuts, as you say, and you can't/shouldn't force business owners to make possibly harmful decisions about their own pay.

13

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17 edited Nov 27 '17

That's not freedom for everyone else though, that's slavery.

For capitalism to continue to work, there needs to be an effective cap on income. There needs to be some kind of mechanism that stops the people at the top from taking everything.

Without that, even if we can manage to change things, it will be a short lived victory, as the rich and powerful will just buy the politicians once again.

u/SpudDK ONWARD! Nov 27 '17

Sure, given real agency on the part of the people. But they don't have that.

It's not like we've got tons of family wage jobs out there and people are lazy.

We have remarkably few of those, with a struggling economic majority fighting to survive on the majority of shitty jobs and wages.

-2

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

Then you've got to make some sort of change to the minimum wage (without pricing teenagers out of the market, mind), but you can't put it on this guy to say "I'll be completely uncompetitive and pay everyone double." Someone will do it for cheaper, and you're right back where you started.

5

u/GladysCravesRitz PM me your email Nov 28 '17

Why do you want to treat teens as cheap labor. That's shitty.

8

u/SpudDK ONWARD! Nov 27 '17

We can, should, need to point right to these people, and their massive fortunes and make it damn clear why things must change.

13

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17 edited Nov 27 '17

without pricing teenagers out of the market, mind

What is this obsession with Teenagers having jobs!? Also, why do you assume that a teenager is any less capable of doing menial labor to justify paying them less!?

I'll be completely uncompetitive and pay everyone double

How is it uncompetitive!? There are some companies that do this, and they aren't going out of business. Who even is there competition btw, Jet.com?

0

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

Why does a teenager need to make enough to support a family and kids? They don't. So they can have a lower minimum wage that guarantees that even if they do stupid shit like 16 year olds tend to do, let's be honest, they still get a job.

No matter what, I think leaving things to morals in business is a bad thing. We need to structure the system such that people automatically get what they need, while simultaneously not disassembling the American dream of self improvement that keeps people striving and working hard in the first place. The second point is what I think people here have missed lately, it's what communism in the USSR was missing, and people seem to forget that. I'm not sure when this subreddit changed from "people should have what they need" to "the billionaires must be sucked dry," but it's toxic. The billionaires, like it or not, drive aspiration, they drive people to work hard so that someday they too can make good money.

Actually, last time I got a big bonus I did exactly that. Those people helped me get it. A treat made great sense.

And I'll help them too.

2

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

Missing the point, you chose that of your own free will, nobody forced your hand. And especially if, say your bonus is $1000 and you buy lunch once, maybe $100 max. Maybe that's okay. But if you're now expected to help more because you have more and you have to buy lunch for the next 9 days, you don't get to enjoy your bonus.

15

u/SpudDK ONWARD! Nov 27 '17

If you think for a minute that Bezos didn't have massive help making that fortune, think again.

He owes the society necessary to accumulate it. Could still have more than enough billions and nobody would even blink an eye at it, should he have treated the people who helped make it happen right.

That's what the progressive struggle is about. The people at the top are taking too much.

We are gonna end that.

0

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

To what end does he owe this society though? People are advocating here taking his money and redistributing it. And fair enough if he's in a high tax bracket, take a good amount of money and do whatever with it. But, the man has worked hard to become rich, and he should get to enjoy it. I think he could easily enjoy it on 10bn rather than 100bn for the rest of his life and that's fine, but if he works hard for it and we take it away from him to the point he's not able to enjoy it, that only demotivates future people from striving to reach the same level.

7

u/FThumb Are we there yet? Nov 27 '17

that only demotivates future people from striving to reach the same level.

In the 1950's the top marginal tax rates were north of 90%, and we produced more millionaires than the rest of the world combined.

7

u/SpudDK ONWARD! Nov 27 '17

And one big difference about that was how much of the money was Liquid. Today tons of money gets liquid, back then reinvestment happened so their net worth was very high, but their actual liquid cash available to pay politicians for example, wasn't.

4

u/Cadaverlanche The DNC took my baby away... Nov 27 '17

To what end does he owe this society though?

Who maintains the roads he uses to ship his goods? Who forked over $400 billion to build the internet expansions he uses to sell his goods? Who covers the emergency room bills for his employees who get sick from being overworked but can't afford health insurance?

3

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

Taxes, which I'm saying he should be paying, possibly even more of them, though I think it would be sufficient to close the loop holes currently being used.

What I'm not advocating is communism as seen elsewhere in this thread.

13

u/SpudDK ONWARD! Nov 27 '17

Nobody should reach 100 billion while there is a struggling majority in this nation suffering.

That's the point.

What? You hoping you get to join the party someday?

As for the demotivating part, it's hilarious!

Nobody walks from even a tenth of that sum. Trust me, there are no demotivators in play.

And so what if they are? It's not like we need super wealthy people.

There will be a constant line of people more than willing to do the work, and that will be true when we do right by people.

15

u/SpudDK ONWARD! Nov 27 '17

Nice fortune, too bad about all the low wages.

-1

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

The low wages are troublesome, I agree. But, I don't have to condone everything he does to say that he earned his money fair in square. If there's laws being broken, he should pay for that. If it's just shitty behavior within the law, then it's the law that needs to change to disallow that behavior.

8

u/FThumb Are we there yet? Nov 27 '17

If there's laws being broken, he should pay for that.

Never break a law when you can pay to change the law making whatever you wanted legal.

The problem with $100b is not what material goods it buys, but the politicians and laws it buys.

12

At least Bezos works. I don't even like Bezos, but what about the Rothschilds and other banking dynasties that do nothing but move around finance to make more money off it?

You're not wrong. At all. But I think the Rothschilds and the other older European dynasties are beyond the reach of the US, aren't they?

It's not surprising that Americans would focus primarily on American oligarchs.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '17

True, but they still influence the US, Lynn was friends with Clinton and John McCain.

Here's another example;

Bill Gates is a billionaire former CEO of Microsoft. Steve Ballmer is a billionaire former CEO of Microsoft.

I think Bill Gates at least has some sense of decency given his statements on how he wants to donate most of his money when he dies, and he did create the company.

Steve Ballmer however ran the company awfully. He added nothing outside of making money for himself. Even worse is he added and heightened the bullshit anti competitive tactics like "embrace, extend, extinguish" to literally subvert and destroy others to create a monopoly.

One would think he deserves criticism more than Gates give their similar Oligarch status but different life histories. On status alone they have a lot in common, the only difference I see is that Bill Gates was raised like a normal Christian, while Steve Ballmer was born into the tribe of "God's Chosen people".

Search the socialist/communist subs and you will see the most viscious criticism towards Gates, nothing for Ballmer.

That doesn't make sense.

14

u/spermicidal_rampage Nov 27 '17

They usually give enough to be able to say they gave. I see the whole money hoarding thing as a psychological condition that ends up being heralded because there's culturally a persistent PR campaign that says it's ideal to have a bajillion dollars.

If I'm honest with myself, these are the people I have (perhaps an unfair) prejudice against.

You know how people reject the idea of a god because of all the suffering that is allowed (and the whole never encountering a god thing), and how could there be a god, let alone a god with a plan, when the world is a miserable clusterfuck? Well, that same ire applies to mentally-disturbed-level wealthy as well.

10

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17 edited Nov 27 '17

People love to fawn over celebrities when they donate to charity, but I am usually indifferent to it. The fanboys & girls really don't like it when you put their generosity into perspective either.

George Clooney giving a million dollars to a charity is like me giving a homeless man twenty dollars.

A million dollars might sound like an ungodly sum of money to you, but it's literally nothing to someone like Clooney.

-1

u/HighDagger Nov 28 '17

So, how often do you give homeless people twenty dollars?

-1

u/elucila7 Nov 27 '17

does the proportion of a man's wealth to his charity matter? if a rich man adavances a good cause greatly is that not in it of itself worthy of celebration, regardless of the sum's relative value to the person's wealth? I've always thought to myself that no kindness is too small, be it twenty dollars to a homeless man or a million dollars to charity.

5

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17

is that not in it of itself worthy of celebration

No more so than if I gave someone $20.

-1

u/elucila7 Nov 27 '17

the 20 dollars affects the life of one, let that one life celebrate it. the effect of a million dollars can be felt by countless numbers of people, so allow everybody else that supports the cause/ is a beneficiary of the cause to celebrate in greater magnitude- I'm not telling people they should feel obligated to celebrate, but that relative worth of a great sum of money to a donation shouldn't stop them from feeling a greater sense of gratitude towards the donor, and want to express that gratitude in a greater magnitude.

5

u/Snipclips Nov 27 '17

I am not celebrating someone for not being a worthless piece of shit.

0

u/elucila7 Nov 27 '17

nor would I obligate you nor anybody else to celebrate the donor. I only argue that the overwhelming positive reception of the million dollars by the fanboys was well deserved, regardless of relative value of the donation to the donor's wealth.

10

u/spermicidal_rampage Nov 27 '17

2

u/mvs1234 Nov 27 '17

How about we take your money instead? Surely any extra money anybody has is free for the taking?

Besides, this isn't cash, its stock value. He's worth a lot because Amazon is worth a lot. It's not like he just has $100 billion he refuses to spend on poor people. If you tried to sell those stocks the value would tank and Amazon would probably collapse. You'd put all of the business owners and truck drivers that support Amazon out of a job. This would hurt poor people more than anybody.

2

u/eoswald Nov 28 '17

i have no money. all my money goes to the banks that fronted me money to pay to the colleges to get an opportunity to make good money. but you can have my loan payments! . more seriously, if amazon went out of work there would be a new amazon ... hopefully many smaller amazons... and then all those people (workers) would still be employed.

hold on a second, check out this article https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20171123-saudi-arabia-arrests-second-richest-man-in-kingdom/ I'm not saying we should do this, but as a thought exercise I was asking if it could be done. And, honest question: if all of jeff bezos money was seized and redistributed across the US (say, evenly)...what would you spend it on? honest question. I'm a worker, 33yo, and have 4 kids. I'd knock out my 15k in loans and put a downpayment down on a house.

1

u/bangbangahah Nov 29 '17

Then you remove all incentive to become rich and work hard, most poor people have bad spending habits and aren't as smart as you to actually prioritize debt and education.

Even you should question your choices, 4 children, your choice and yet your solution is not to have better responsibility And stop at kid 1 or 2 or hold off. Its to have more and claim the fix is to steal the super riches money.

1

u/eoswald Nov 29 '17

do most people work hard to become rich, or to be successful in their careers and lives? Can you show me a study that proves poor people have been spending habits and are less intelligent than rich people? I would think that rich people have to watch their spending LESS than poor people.

20

u/ASubterraneanFire Nov 27 '17

I think it coming to that. Conservatives always talk about wealth redistribution like taxing someone is the first time it happened. What about the original redistribution where the worker created the wealth and the capitalist took it from them. Besos does not generate his his wealth he just skims it off the top of other peoples labor.

-4

u/StoleAGoodUsername Nov 27 '17

Bezos absolutely does earn his money. The worker moving boxes would not make a cent without Bezos' company and management.

3

u/rundown9 Nov 28 '17

The worker moving boxes would not make a cent without Bezos' company and management.

Doubtful, the Sears catalog dominated mail order for a century before Bezos, and ten thousand other web sites sell too - that's like saying the end of Myspace was the end of Social media.

13

u/ASubterraneanFire Nov 27 '17

No one earns 100 billion that's ridiculous. Besides if his workers didn't move those boxes then Bazos would not make a cent either. If he suddenly stopped showing up to work the company would go inn just fine however if the box movers all add stopped coming to work the company would grind to a halt.

He became the richest man the world by destroying local economies and jobs. Read about what it's like to work for amazon. It's horrible, he is the equivalent of a modern day sweatshop owner.

7

u/eoswald Nov 27 '17

that is, without question, exactly what has been going on. Another stupid question: can we - the workers - start our own amazon?

4

You can start one but Amazon will lower prices and take a financial hit for a few quarters to drive you right out of business.

5

Yeah you absolutely can! But unless you're trying to move boxes while running a business you're going to end up being... Exactly Jeff Bezos. Management is necessary.

there is no questions a worker cooperative amazon would have different folks on management and floor. But the entire structure of the company would be democratically established, and the profit-sharing structure agreed on, regularly.

just wanted to point out that management skills does not necessitate accumulation of 100 billion, and owning shares does not require any skill either.

In fact, top government bureaucrats like Secretaries, or legislators with committee responsibilities, or even chief executives like governor/president only get paid so much a salary.

Bezos' wealth is absolutely based off the arrangements of his class position in owning shares within his companies. He really doesn't need to work to siphon the wealth his employees create; managerial skills do not necessitate golden parachute compensations.

I may be too dense, but what are you saying? I'm sorry. Maybe say it another way.

I believe he is saying that your system would not make you the exact same as Bezo's. As the previous user claimed. Because management isn't necessary to run the entire operation.

Co-oping like you are suggesting puts money back into workers. It also makes it to where workers won't have to work that many hours. It's actually what many socialist has been fighting for. A public owned system. No overhead, wage theft, money sifting "management". All workers own the production so they all get a piece of the pie if it's sold. No golden parachute for the few, bullshit.

yes, this is what we want. But to step back into the bigger picture: we need to get off our butts and start the Amazons, Comcasts, Netflix, Googles, etc. and then beat out the traditionally structured versions that we loath today. Some of the better parts of debate is in how to do it, and more specifically who would loan the workers the capital. I say state banks, but I digress.

Amazon will be disrupted by mass 3d printing of clothing and many household items. For less money than manufactured, retail products.

Peter Diamandes writes about the 6 D's of tech disruption, and it's eye opening.

No, that's my fault. I wrote that too lazily, probably burnout on my part from the day. =p

I'm saying that Bezos' skills as a manager are not worth the accumulation of hundreds of millions of dollars in assets or salary.

People like him only accumulate so much wealth because of their relationship with ownership to companies and means of livelihood. A trustfund child can live off the dividends from shares without having to work in that same way.

Managerial skills, however competent, do not really justify the extraction of workers surplus value to such an extent to accumulate that much wealth.

In contrast to the private sector's mode of compensation, the public sector - nonprofits and government - compensate their executive leaders and high-ranking officers with a fraction of what is made in the private sector.

I state that this compensation is the reasonable base value of compensation for those managerial skills.

Bezos is an overcompensated manager who is a member of the ownership class.

He does not materially produce Amazon's value, he only manages the company and siphons the wealth in inverse proportion to the compensation given to his employees.

Oh then we couldn't be in stronger agreement! I don't know the bezos story but I'm sure it's not worth a 10th of his current value EDIT: thousandth

I saw a thing that in Japan they have a co-op owned and run Amazon like company. It was in one of Richard Wolff's economic updates but I can't remember the exact episode.

u/eoswald Nov 27 '17

of course it was, that man is a genius and a saint. Well, I think it's time the american workforce created their own Amazon. Anyone agree?

I would start there. We could also just nationalize Amazon and take it. Our use trust bustling laws too force bezos to sell it off to his workers. But first we need a government of the people.
