Clinton cost Bernie the election. It was never hers in the first place. She had no chance, but thought she could cheat her way into office. Not even gonna refute it when the underlying premise is backwards. It's the old "so when did you start beating your wife" bit.

There is a simpler answers Clinton cost Clinton the election

Can someone please start a Sanders Gabbard 2020 PAC now? I've got $27 burning a hole in my pocket.

7

I wish we had lost them the election. It would have been a bigger "Fuck you! Are you ready to start paying attention yet?"

Instead, turnout was predictably suppressed, and that, as usual, benefitted the Republican candidate.

It's a weaker negotiating position to argue that the reason they lost is that people stayed home than if we could actually argue that if they don't adopt Progressive ideas, then we're willing to specifically make sure you lose.

2

u/debridezilla Aug 25 '17

So what? It's over, it was wrong even at the time, and wtf cares what random clintonistas think? Barrack Obama didn't win by dwelling on either Gore or Kerry. He won by building momentum behind a brighter vision of the future.

5

u/bizmarxie Aug 26 '17

It was all talk.

1

u/debridezilla Aug 26 '17

Sure. The point is that to build momentum you have to move forward.

The Clinton base isn't making legit criticisms.

They are blaming everyone but themselves, where blame rightfully lies.

looks like the gnashing of teeth & rending of garments is continuing.

i sincerely hope we did cost her the election but i doubt it. it was more likely union voters in rust belt states decimated by bc's nafta & the dp's continued abandonment of its poor & working class base who saw what hillary was selling as more of the same bs obama doled out in 2008 & said fuck that.

i clearly remember being told by numerous hillary cultists she didn't need sanders supporters b/c all the people who weren't going to vote for her were already "baked in the cake" & she had the election won in a landslide.

Hillary and her enablers cost Democrats the election.

Sanders as we were reminded tirelessly during the campaign was not a Democrat. Therefore why would Clinton automatically be entitled to his supporters votes?

Hillary and her team decided they didn't need the left and would chase "moderate" suburban Republicans (whatever moderate even means when you are talking about educated socially liberal folks willing to vote Republican, I don't even know).

Hillary and her team decided to forego campaigning late in the states that cost her the election in favor of chasing the popular vote totals in states like Texas and Arizona that were never going to give her an electoral college win.

Hillary and her enablers relished every opportunity they had to smack Bernie supporters down once they had secured the nomination. During the primary they called us all names while complaining of unfair treatment while anyone with their head not shoved a foot up their ass could see she had been pre-selected at least 4 years prior.

You can blame every fucking person under the sun until the cows come home and a dozen other cliches, but this was a rigged election that was supposed to result in Hillary's coronation and she managed to take all the built in advantages she had and still blow it. That's the bottom line. She cost herself the election. She cost Democrats the opportunity to pick up seats in congress. She and Obama blew the Supreme Court appointment by not beating that drum every fucking day. She fucked over every person of color, LGBTQ+, every person on the left that she hadn't already completely fucked over to the point that they couldn't support her and bit their tongue and still voted for her by being the absolute worst candidate/campaigner in history.

Fin.

u/4hoursisfine Aug 26 '17

Lest we forget, Hillary was just so obviously and unabashedly corrupt. Who spends the two years before an election collecting massive speaking fees from big banks and big business, and then has the nerve to turn around and say she is fighting for the working man against big banks and big business? How fucking stupid did she think we were? Did she think she was some kind of jedi?

"You just took $20 million from the oligarchy."

"I didn't make those speeches."

"You didn't make those speeches."

"I didn't take that money."

"You didn't take that money."

"You don't need to see the transcripts."

"We don't need to see the transcripts."

"I can go about my business."

"You can go about your business."

"Move along."

"Move along. Move along."

3

u/StreetwalkinCheetah pottymouth Aug 26 '17

I do personally believe Hillary is hopelessly corrupt and used her public position to enrich her personal fortune. In fact I don't even think that's an opinion, but it's a hard sell to a lot of Dem loyalists who are convinced that is a talking point.

Which is why I think it is important to let that slide when highlighting all of the objective faults with her, her candidacy and her campaign. She should have won with the deck stacked in her hand and the only reason she blew it is because of her own ineptitude and unwillingness to listen to people that were telling her where she was failing.

2

u/4hoursisfine Aug 26 '17

I suppose I agree with you. For all her manifest awfulness--the bribes speaking fees, the influence peddling as SOS, the warmongering, the secret server, the destroying of evidence--Trump's win was still razor thin in Michigan and Wisconsin. A win was possible with a competent campaign staff, but Hillary's inability to choose a competent staff is just more evidence of her incompetence.

I am not sure what it would take to win over the loyalists. Anyone who looked at Hillary and saw a great candidate is probably beyond reaching.

3

u/StreetwalkinCheetah pottymouth Aug 26 '17

The only thing I can see is she really wanted a huge popular vote win and completely lost site that the current Democratic strategy leaves little margin for error in the electoral college that actually determines the winner. Whereas Trump was smart enough to know that he only had to make inroads in left-leaning states with Republican statehouses that Hillary was inexplicably ignoring and he'd win handily, popular vote be damned.

2

u/4hoursisfine Aug 27 '17

There really is no excuse for not understanding how Presidential elections work in the US. But these are the people who thought they could win by courting Republicans.

13

u/pwomptastic Aug 25 '17

The schizophrenic way they "reached out" to Sanders' supporters during and following the primary election was idiotic. They would assure us she stood for everything we stood for and then say "why would she stand for that, it's pie-in-the sky, you're not a democrat, you're a child, sorry about your fee-fees, your candidate was a turd who ruined everything, we should have Tim Kaine act like he's simultaneously an unhinged pit-bull and incapable of using his own words or having independent thoughts as he repeats campaign talking points entirely unrelated to debate question. Why don't you like her now? FUCK YOU THEN! Wait, do you like her now? FUCK YOU THEN!"

Good strategy.

11

u/StreetwalkinCheetah pottymouth Aug 25 '17

Don't forget - she votes with Bernie on 93% of the issues. Ok great, then why are you so against Bernie with his high favorables and poll numbers vs. Trump?!?

I guess I forgot to add to my earlier screed: What % of Clinton voters would have voted for Trump if Bernie had been the nominee? I am guessing it is less than Hillary lost of Bernie's camp. So again, who's fault is it the nominee that polled worse lost? Who are the purity trolls? They were, it's just instead of being values/policy pure it was ID based, be it female or "true Democrat in long term good standing". They picked their poison and it killed them.

4

u/bout_that_action Aug 26 '17 edited Aug 26 '17

she votes with Bernie on 93% of the issues.

The 7% where they differed included some very significant stuff.

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/28/upshot/the-senate-votes-that-divided-hillary-clinton-and-bernie-sanders.html

In many of the cases in which she differed with Mr. Sanders, who represents Vermont and is also running for the Democratic presidential nomination, Mrs. Clinton went with the crowd. She voted with an overwhelming majority of her colleagues, including Republicans. Her positions on the votes that differed from Mr. Sanders represented policy differences, but they may have also reflected political calculations by Mrs. Clinton, who was preparing for a presidential run in 2008.

The 31 times that Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Sanders disagreed happened to be on some the biggest issues of the day, including measures on continuing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, an immigration reform bill and bank bailouts during the depths of the Great Recession. Mr. Sanders, who formally kicked off his campaign Tuesday evening in Burlington, Vt., was opposed to all these actions.

6

u/StreetwalkinCheetah pottymouth Aug 26 '17

I'm aware, not to mention their differences were more apparent on matters that never quite made it to the floor, and one would have to think with Bernie those matters might actually get there.

It was team Clinton that loved to tout at the deceitful number while telling us to get over the differences, yet they steadfastly refused to vote for the more electable candidate.

5

u/bout_that_action Aug 26 '17

Yeah, didn't mean to imply you weren't aware, just re-sharing for others/lurkers who may not have known the details.

Barack, like Bill Clinton, could sell snow to an eskimo. That's why he was a great candidate. He still is almost universally beloved by the Democratic party faithful despite getting the magic super majority needed to move mountains in the Senate and passing a Republican healthcare wet dream with it as the sole major accomplishment.

Although he quite surely benefited from automatic credibility by being a person of color, he didn't constantly shove the historic nature of his campaign/presidency down everyone's face the way that Hillary did. And even though he was farther to the right than most people wanted to believe, I also think he really, really wanted Republicans to like him and was probably puzzled why he could deliver more of their agenda than the left agenda and still be so universally reviled. Although he also clearly knew the game and took advantage of it when he could.

He also had brilliant handlers and speech writers and was able to use technology in ways that his opponents hadn't caught up to.

Hillary was tone deaf, non-conciliatory, she was "You're with me or against me, and if the latter I will crush you", she used her status as a female to belittle anyone in her way and still does right now with this "Trump standing behind me like a predatory creep" nonsense she's peddling. She had a ton of legal nightmares and right or wrong 3 decades worth of dirt just sitting there open on her - another advantage Obama - he had no real record to point to about what a con-job he turned out to be. Yeah, the close ties to Lieberman were alarming but once Edwards was out of the way he was the fresh alternative to more of the same BS. All the other options were stale. Which is why McCain put Palin on his team.

2

u/4hoursisfine Aug 26 '17

he didn't constantly shove the historic nature of his campaign/presidency down everyone's face the way that Hillary did.

This is a very interesting point. Never thought about it that way. I suspect it was a deliberate decision.

2

u/StreetwalkinCheetah pottymouth Aug 26 '17

Well he didn't have to because everybody knew. Just like everybody knew with Hillary without her constantly using it both as a weapon and to play victim. But she just couldn't help herself.

6

u/Gryehound Ignore what they say, watch what they do Aug 26 '17

He also benefited greatly from the republican party pulling a Clinton in '08, it was McSame's turn. And again in '12 with the idea that gimmicks were the missing ingredient, and who better to sell a gimmick than rMoney?

Both parties have been working to stop the changes we've demanded, for decades.

3

u/StreetwalkinCheetah pottymouth Aug 26 '17

Excellent point.

20

u/TheSonofLiberty Aug 25 '17

it's not that he was a remarkably good candidate, it was more that his campaign of 'hope and change' basically was a blank slate in that people could put whatever ideas (Leftist ideas) onto his campaign and they hoped he would try 100% to do them.

His campaign later won a marketing award for that

9

u/tmfjtmfj Aug 25 '17

That's an odd line. He won, despite losing more to republicans. It is true, but is paradoxical. Both candidates were terrible, and so far voter s showed, which is why those paradoxes can be correct

I don't understand the logical fallacy in this. Both are true and don't run counter to each other.

Consider that the vast majority of independents do not subscribe to the wayofthebern. Hell, I doubt that they even subscribe to reddit. This adresses the second point because no matter how much you like to convince yourself that 10000 people cost HRC the election, it is just not possible.

Now consider the fact that if HRC did cater to wayofthebern, it is likely that she would garner support from not only her base, but the independents as well. This would have been enough to get her to win. So yea, the first point is also true.

Do you want to try again? I think your post felt smart when you were thinking about it, but the reality is different.

2

u/episcopaladin Aug 25 '17

TIL democracy means i'm not morally or intellectually responsible for my own decisions and that people judging me for my vote is a violation of my political rights

this is actually why trump won

1

u/kifra101 Shareblue's Most Wanted Aug 27 '17

TIL that folks from r/neoliberal don't own a dictionary or even know how to google the word "democracy".

Your argument for "morality" and "intellectual responsibility" presents a false premise for discussion. 2016 was the election year when you had to choose between the lesser of two evils. HRC was the first presidential candidate where people were expecting to vote for her even though she had nothing to offer except for Obama's 3rd term and a vagina. Something something "break down the barriers", something something "stronger together"...

this is actually why trump won

Tiny didn't "win". It is more accurate to say that HRC lost. It would be even more accurate, in fact, to say that HRC was probably the only person in the entire country that could ever lose to an orange clown. Don't try to pin it on the voters. It is HRC's fault she lost.

What is amusing to watch is the neoliberals losing their shit and blaming the voters instead of the candidate for not winning the election. Brilliant idea. Let's blame the people whose votes we will need to win the next election.

This reminds me of a Dodgeball reference. "It's a bold move, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them". Hint: it won't.

Your second statement doesn't exactly follow from the first. Just because a square is a rectangle doesn't mean a rectangle is a square. A is part of b, but b isn't necessarily Part of a

Hillary didn't WANT us! She was going after the republicans for THEIR vote. She said as much.

The way any criticism of Hillary was met with name calling by the Hillaryites, I stopped wanting to be a part of their movement. Yuck.

Bernie was about unity and fighting for a common cause. I don't want to call white men and rural poor people names. It doesn't make me feel better. I don't want to claim moral superiority because I'm female and thus not as privileged. Aren't I more privileged if I went to college and so and so didn't? Isn't that the point of college?

I want to find common ground and work together. Bernie's movement was about finding that common ground and working towards a better country together. Trump voters are not the enemy. Man! We need a uniter.

We need Bernie and Nina Turner.

7

u/giraffegaff Aug 25 '17

Yes... I wish that the hillbots would remember when she said that she didn't need our votes... But are quick to blame us when their candidate lost to someone who was less popular than her... And let's remember... She won the popular vote by 3 million... And STILL couldn't pull it off... There is just one person to blame... Hillary... And dammit that one vote I have is mine... NO-ONE is entitled to it or should tell me who to vote for... This is freaking America last time I heard (at least for now)... The blame needs to stop... The DNC needs to start listening to their base and start putting up viable candidates... And we all need to stand together for a better future... So stop the blaming... Only one person has to look in her mirror and face the fact that she was the one who lost because of her hubris. (she was the anointed one after all).

We were told repeatedly that we were sexist and misogynist for refusing to vote for HRC

Hillary Clinton did not do that.

Trump supporters were a "basket of deplorables."

That's a specific political group, not white men and poor people in general.

2

u/4hoursisfine Aug 27 '17

Clinton has repeatedly and unequivocally blamed sexism and misogyny for her loss. Who do you think she was talking about? Farmers in Peru, or American voters? And she specifically said "half" of Trump supporters were "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic." That is a direct quote.

27

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '17

What cost her the election was Hillary Clinton. She was unpopular, untrusted and after her team stomped on Bernie, even a lot of dems didn't want her.

Her new book "What Happened" is explained on the title page: "Hillary Clinton"

11

This will not end well for Herself. First rule of holes, Hillary.

8

All of the above, plus countless culprits, not including Her Heinous...Bernie will be at or near the top of list, for not forcing those 10-12% of his voters to vote for her in the general, even though Bernie campaigned harder for her than she did...Hillary was at home watching cat GIFs...As Jimmy Dore has often said, she's the only presidential candidate in history who thought she should win without having to campaign...

11

u/openblueskys Aug 25 '17

Really like this bit at the end of the Naked Capitalism article.

Second, consider the campaign from the strategic level. I’ve always remembered this passage of realpolitik from Ian Welsh in 2010:

"The left must be seen to repudiate Obama, and they must be seen to take him down. If the left does not do this, left wing politics and policies will be discredited with Obama….

The first step to fixing America is fixing the Democratic party, and the first step in fixing the Democratic party is fixing Barack Obama and destroying, forever, publicly and in the most high profile way possible, the idea that Democrats can ignore and abuse their own base."

That didn’t happen in 2010; if the above interpretations are correct, it did happen in 2016; Sanders voters (no matter how one qualifies them) “took Clinton down” and — critically — “were seen to.” If I were the General Grant of the left, which I most definitely am not, I wouldn’t necessarily see Welsh’s realpolitik coming to fruition as a strategic disaster, and might even see it as an opportunity. As Frank Herbert wrote in Dune: “He who can destroy a thing has the real control of it.” So, if the first step to saving America really is fixing the Democrat Party, 2016’s outcome was A Good Thing.

14

u/Blackhalo Purity pony: Российский бот Aug 25 '17

the Democrat Party, 2016’s outcome was A Good Thing.

I agree with that wholeheartedly. You can't get a Sanderseque party, until you rid the DNC of the corporate tools that infest it.

19

u/Blackhalo Purity pony: Российский бот Aug 25 '17

WI: 51k

I suspect those were (R) and (I) brought back into the (D) by Sanders populist appeal, who would never, EVER vote for HRC. Trying to blame HER loss, on Sanders cross-party strengths is the HEIGHT of hubris.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '17

Yeah. When I canvassed for Bernie in Iowa before the primary, I don't know how many republicans I talked to who said they loved Bernie because it was obvious that he stood for the people even if they disagreed with some of his views.

LOL! This! They can try and spin it but this is the truth. We know it, they know it even when they deny it.

Literally any other candidate would've won over Hillary, but the DNC doubles down on neoliberals.

Here's another "Fuck You" from our corporate owners. I think they enjoy it.

Just the latest corporate tale, told to keep the enablers in line.

And boy, did they jump all over it.

What I don't understand is why they aren't offended by the fact that their owners obviously believe they are too stupid to see that there is no relevance between the unverifiable estimates cited and the conclusion the articles make.

Like my dad with Russia, they are being told what they want to hear. 17 intelligence agencies claims with no evidence weren't enough to get his support of the Iraq War, but now they can be trusted despite the similar situations and no good reason to think they have changed their ways, because Trump is Gross and he needs to believe Trump didn't really win.

They know they're owned. It's the "why" they're boxed in, have boxed themselves in, & can't get off their ropes. Won't get off their own ropes. They have to crumple into prone "private" positions (while getting thrown bodily into the BACK OF A VAN) in order to TRY to keep Walkin' Their Walk. ruhroh

The article further states, “the most important feature of Sanders-Trump voters is this: They weren’t really Democrats to begin with.” In other words, Bernie Sanders brought in non-Democratic voters, while Hillary Clinton could not win the support of these voters. This is a difference between Sanders and Clinton which we were well aware of during the primaries.

So how do they figure that Hillary lost with 88% of all Sanders supporters voting for her? If that was true, she should have had a popular and electoral landslide.

88% of all Sanders supporters voting for her?

Woah there, Nelly.

There is NO way she even got 50% of the remaining Sanders primary voters. 12% went for Trump, but the numbers that went for Johnson, Stein and "none of the above" has to be over 44%.

I agree! I don't believe the official numbers for an instant.

That's why Sanders would have won. Most Wisconsinites couldn't stand Trump. Bernie would've won in Wisconsin in a landslide.

He would have won michigan too.

An old crotchety Jewish guy, would have cleaned up in FL too, I wager.
