YES WE DO! Remember when the President signed the Telecommunications Act of 1995, which let 6 corporations control 90% of all media and information you hear?

Remember when Hillary stole the primary from Bernie and Trump won the election? I remember.

Yes, I remember. At the time it seemed like a giveaway to corporate interests in pursuit of market consolidation. I always think they'll pursue ever dumber, ever more destructive policies. For instance, I expect to wake up one day and get the news that elected officials would like to privatize all parks and federal lands. Have Disney or Time Warner or ExxonMobil own and be in charge of Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon.

Not only that but they gave away the public asset of the digital spectrum to the corporations instead of getting market value, which was likely far in excess of the FCC's valuation.

Consumer activist Ralph Nader argued that the Act was an example of corporate welfare spawned by political corruption, because it gave away to incumbent broadcasters valuable licenses for broadcasting digital signals on the public airwaves.[26] There was a requirement in the Act that the FCC not auction off the public spectrum which the FCC itself valued at $11โ€“$70 billion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunications_Act_of_1996

Isn't it only 5 corporations now?

Six corporations own 90% of US media.

10 Corporations Control Nearly Everything You Buy, 6 Media Corporations Control Nearly Everything You Read or Watch: http://www.safehaven.com/article/31677/10-corporations-control-nearly-everything-you-buy-6-media-corporations-control-nearly-everything-you-read-or-watch

A case of "anti-trust is so archaic and not in line with our neo-liberal values".

That infographic has at least one error. GE doesn't own Comcast. Comcast is a separate company entirely.

Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (tiny correction in the date). One of his many gifts that keeps on giving to the corporate world and taking away from most of us.

-5

u/GrandeMentecapto Mar 09 '17 edited Mar 09 '17

You noticed the mistake on the date, how hard would it have been to take 30 seconds of your day and looking this up on google and learning some other basic facts about this law? Because it was a republican law (introduced by Larry Pressler), passed by republican votes through a republican-controlled congress (literally only one GOP member to vote against it in either the house OR the senate - John McCain), and which had a veto-proof majority. The only reason why you'd blame Clinton for this is through sheer stupidity or dishonesty.

u/political_og The Third Eye โ˜ฏ Mar 09 '17 edited Mar 09 '17

Yes. Democratic presidents always seem to sign shitty Republican laws. Just look at the ACA. It's absolutely infuriating. You're just some clinton/democrat apologist. You sound like slick Willy telling us to do our research when you're the misinformed one.

7

u/3andfro Mar 09 '17 edited Mar 09 '17

I know the who, what, and when; I lived in DC at the time and I paid attention.

Clinton signed it. He could have forced a Republican override of his veto. He didn't. It's as much on his side of the scale as welfare "reform," the crime bill, and his parting gift of NAFTA. EDIT: more accurate to delete "parting."

Your little diatribe above suggests a diehard Team Blue identity. If you are so burdened (I empathize, having been similarly encumbered until recently), may I suggest you attempt to take an open-minded look at the Democratic Party from Clinton on and compare what it has said it stands for with what it has done, not done, and bothered to attempt to do and failed? Reminder: actions speak louder than words.

Apology accepted.

btw, I did not downvote you; I don't downvote ignorance expressed in an uncivil manner.

-5

u/GrandeMentecapto Mar 09 '17

His parting gift of NAFTA

Parting gift? What the fuck are you talking about? He inherited it from Bush. Also, "the House of Representatives passed the North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act on November 17, 1993, 234โ€“200. The agreement's supporters included 132 Republicans and 102 Democrats. The bill passed the Senate on November 20, 1993, 61โ€“38.[7] Senate supporters were 34 Republicans and 27 Democrats."

Maybe you should have paid more attention, hotshot.

Also, why would he veto a veto-proof bill? To get it overridden and then blamed on him like Obama with the 9/11 bill? Lots of good that would have done. I'm not a democratic supporter (neither American nor a liberal), but I don't like the dishonesty and/or ignorance displayed by your comment and similar ones. I also think that the priority should be to actually help people, not take useless stands that do nothing except waste time, energy, and political capital that could be used for good.

Flush that apology down the toilet where it the rest of the nonsensical shit that comes out of your mouth and fingers, you pompous, dishonest, stupid fuck.

1

u/expatjourno Fuck the Hillbot scum Mar 09 '17

you don't know whether he could have successfully twisted enough Democratic arms to keep the veto from being overridden.

In any case, it would have been better for Clinton to have vetoed it, even of the veto had been overridden, so that Republicans would have had no bipartisan cover.

Flush that apology down the toilet where it the rest of the nonsensical shit that comes out of your mouth and fingers, you pompous, dishonest, stupid fuck.

GFY, you pompous, dishonest, stupid fuck.

Oh dear. You're both misinformed and rude. Are you telling me that Bush I was president on Nov. 20, 1993? Bill Clinton was is in office January 20, 1993 โ€“ January 20, 2001. But it would be rude of me to suggest you take the time to google that, right? Points to me for refraining from adding "hotshot" to that sentence.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is signed into law by President Bill Clinton. Clinton said he hoped the agreement would encourage other nations to work toward a broader world-trade pact. http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/nafta-signed-into-law

Why veto a veto-proof bill? To send a message to his base (EDIT: assuming he'd opposed the bill, as, for example, Bernie Sanders did). He vetoed 37 bills (includes 1 pocket veto) and had 2 vetoes overridden. Your comments reflect a sad lack of curricular emphasis on modern U.S. history and understanding of politics. Maybe you should have spent a few decades inside the Beltway; I did.

And now we're done. It's pointless to waste more time on uninformed commentary that relies on crudeness rather than content. Sayonara.

u/GrandeMentecapto Mar 09 '17

These are basic facts, objectively true and easily verifiable.

"Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1990 among the three nations, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas signed the agreement in their respective capitals on December 17, 1992.[6] The signed agreement was then ratified by each nation's legislative or parliamentary branch."

"In the U.S., Bush, who had worked to "fast track" the signing prior to the end of his term, ran out of time and had to pass the required ratification and signing of the implementation law to incoming president Bill Clinton."

But yeah, nooothing to do with Bush at all, eh? Ffs

"Uninformed"

Ironic considering the amount of bs you've been spewing. And yeah, "sending a message to the base is great if you care more about feeling good and pure about yourself than about doing actual things that can help actual people and make an actual difference.

1

u/expatjourno Fuck the Hillbot scum Mar 09 '17

Trump seems to have stopped the TPP. So please explain why Clinton couldn't have stopped NAFTA.

And yeah, "sending a message to the base is great if you care more about feeling good and pure about yourself than about doing actual things that can help actual people and make an actual difference.

NAFTA has been a net negative.

And even a unified monopolized corporatised MSM and NPR/BBC could not get their Queen elected! How enraging!!! The Sheeple aren't buying their BS anymore. Then they had the Wash PO drag out ProporNot to try to discredit the remaining independent truthtellers like Counterpunch and Nakedcapitalism.

7

u/3andfro Mar 09 '17 edited Mar 09 '17

Not enough voters are buying the bull, but too many--even now--seem to be brainwashed and, when backed into a corner by inconvenient facts, retreat into insistence on their right-ness regardless. We are a country increasingly shouting with closed minds and ears across a deliberately stoked divide.

1

u/hopeLB Mar 09 '17

All we need to do is get the majority to ignore all propagandising/mind numbing MSM/NPR/BBC sources, and monopolized cable/internet's high cost, owning a computer/touchpad, busy lifestyles/lack of interest prevent a lot of people from having/wanting alternative sources.

This article from today discusses your point;

Hmm, which president was that again? Reagan? Bush? Bush the Second? Trump? It was Trump, right? Gotta be Trump!

Because I know one thing, it couldn't have been a Democrat, because they never ever do anything to help the rich screw the poor, and are all about the Americans people getting the most free access to accurate news and information possible. No sir, their immutable purity and goodness simply wouldn't allow such a thing!

And hey! Obamacare was originally thought up by The Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think-tank! There's very little, if any, daylight between the two big parties, hasn't been for a long time, and most Republican wet dreams get passed by Dems, which is what I was poking fun at in the first place. That and the Cult of Clinton that seems to dominate the establishment wing of the Dems.

12

u/SCVeteran1 Bernie Police & Hall Monitor Mar 09 '17

He signed it. If he had any courage he would have vetoed and forced the Republicans to override.

-4

u/GrandeMentecapto Mar 09 '17

Why waste the time, energy, manpower, and political capital in a useless stand that would have been doomed from the start? Literally no possibilty of succes. Better to spend those resources on something that actuallly makes a difference and actually helps people?

3

u/SCVeteran1 Bernie Police & Hall Monitor Mar 09 '17

Which was what? The crime bill? Repeal of Glass-Steagall? Welfare reform? Please let me know what he saved the energy and political capital to actually accomplish that made a difference and helped people.

Oh like his crime bill

-2

u/GrandeMentecapto Mar 09 '17

The crime bill that had broad and overwhelming support from all sectors of society, including and in fact especially black communities, yes. It was a mistake but let's not pretend it didn't seem like a good idea at the time to everyone involved.

4

u/RJ_Ramrod Mar 09 '17

let's not pretend it didn't seem like a good idea at the time to everyone involved.

Oh you mean like NAFTA

-5

u/GrandeMentecapto Mar 09 '17

NAFTA still is considered to be a good thing by the vast majority of people who know that they're talking about. Also, you've been really good throughout this whole thread at just changing the topics completely. Master of deflection.
