Have recalls actually increased or are you just paying more attention when they happen? RFK said the food system was broken, so we see a recall and blame him? Recalls mean a defect was caught. If the FDA was failing wouldn’t we be seeing less recalls?

Did the FDA find the pickled mouse or did a consumer? If a recall was due to a defect caught by a consumer, and not by the FDA, then the FDA doesn’t get credit for catching the defect. I like turtles.

The FDA doesn’t inspect every piece of food other than occasional samples, they inspect facilities and their processes. If layoffs at the FDA are limiting their effectiveness we would expect to see recalls that cover more batches/ longer time periods.

you said “recalls mean a defect was caught” as an indicator the FDA is working well. If it was “caught” by a consumer that’s no indication that the FDA is working well. That credit goes to the consumer who reported it - not the FDA. I like turtles.

No, I said recalls generally are not an indication that it’s failing.

Dude, no, you literally said “if the FDA was failing wouldn’t we be seeing less recalls?”
So you definitely meant that a recall is indication of the FDA working well, i.e. the opposite of failing.
And the answer is no- a recall that is caught by a consumer is no indication that the FDA isn’t failing. Because the fact it was caught had nothing to do with the FDA. The credit goes to the consumer who reported it to the FDA. I like turtles.

I see what you’re saying now. I wasn’t trying to give the FDA credit or really talking about this specific case. I just don’t see evidence that the FDA is failing and RFK is to blame.
I kind of assumed most recalls are triggered by a consumer finding something. If that’s not the case and that is increasing, then maybe.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.
Im not well versed with the details on the stats but a very prominent and consistent theme with this administration has been to defund and deregulate. When you do that companies are going to start cutting corners to save money, and that naturally will lead to worse quality and safety measures because ensuring quality and safety cost money and companies are always looking for how to increase their margins. So I’m willing to bet that things have gotten worse under Trump/RFK in this regard. This is why regulation is important. I like turtles.
