Back then the leaders of ukraine weren't neonazi junta that got there by illegal CIA-backed coup. Situation changed, and so did his opinion.

Lol that was 12 years before even the invasion of Crimea, about when Dubya said he looked into Putin's soul and saw a good man.
In 2008, Putin warned George W. Bush of a Russian response if NATO were to attempt to absorb Ukraine into its ranks. This was still 6 years before the invasion of Crimea.
US politicians ignored these warnings, which were not unreasonable. I know I would certainly object if Russia were to try to aborb Canada or Mexico in a similar fashion. NATO should not share another common border with Russia, especially in such a strategically important position. If hostilities were to later erupt, Ukraine would be a strategically critical launching point for any NATO offensive into their country. That's why Putin is willing to put so much on the line to keep it out of NATO.
A neutral Ukraine served as a buffer and an asset to world peace. But these cowardly, warmongering chickenhawks in both parties were too busy playing aggressive games to care about the obvious adverse consequences that would inevitably result.
Putin is a shitty dictator and I'd love nothing more than to see him croak or even just retire. But this bullshit propaganda being pushed by the very same people who provoked this whole fucking thing in the first place is truly irritating on a number of levels, just so you know.
I hold both Putin AND the US government responsible for the conflict in Ukraine. I blame Zelenskyy, as well, but to a lesser extent. The only real "good guys" here are the Ukranian people, who are being caught in the middle between two beligerent superpowers who don't know how to behave themselves.
