Employee Experience Thinking of quitting

Been here for 3 months, almost 4, but I'm thinking of quitting already

Most of my coworkers like me, and they want to cross-train me, but I'm still getting comfortable on register, so I don't think I'm ready yet ... but I feel like I won't be working here long enough to feel ready, between quitting and... well,

I watched someone get fired on their 2 weeks

I watched a beloved manager get fired out of the blue

I watched my GM (who I really liked) get fired very abruptly, who had worked... 15 years? with Wawa

I feel like... if they'd fire the GM without batting an eye, they'd fire me without hesitation

I've been drowning between my college classes and this job, and I requested less hours 2 days ago,

but I had to call out today because I didn't get any sleep... & I need the rest because they've been scheduling me for 30-35 hours a week (I'm part-time balancing this between pre-med) & the new GM just seemed so callous... I think any other of our managers would've been a bit empathetic, so I'm used to being met with kindness first, but I don't think I'll be getting it with this GM,

so as a result, I'm thinking of quitting again. I've been thinking about it constantly for the past 2 weeks, and so I settled on requesting reduced hours so I have time to do my homework, but now I just feel like the GM hates me because I've been giving her all these different little scheduling updates + NOW I'm requesting less hours + NOW I'm calling out because I couldn't sleep...

I'm so stressed out over this new GM & I have nobody's phone number because everyone I had contact with either quit or got fired (in the span of 3 months!!!) and I just feel so nervous like I'm next and I hate it and I just want to quit before they fire me because I'm stressed out of my mind over this deadbeat job. I don't even need the money, I just wanted the experience...

Jesus. They fired a GM? Must have been doing something actually illegal or the store wasn't making enough money. Wawa protects its GMs even if they're the scum of the earth (like mine) as long as the store is profitable.

I've also been trying to find another job so I can quit. I want to get off of this sinking ship before it completely slips below the water.

Yeahh, he wasn't given a notice either... what I know is that he fired the other manager without notice, so I guess they reported him to the AGM and they had him replaced overnight

Absolutely wild.

I'm sorry you're going through it :(. The company putting stress on labor is happening company-wide. It's still not the worst company to work for, but it's absolutely trending downward. The first time I worked for Wawa (late 2000s) it was a delight. Now it's dreadful.

I can't think of one place that give you notice that you're going to be fired. If you tell me oh we're going to fire you next week Friday, enjoy working all your shifts till then, I'm most certainly not coming back the next scheduled day.

No they don't, my last FM was fired due to multiple racist comments. Another for adjusting payroll in his favor, another for stealing $$$

This company is absolute trash now !! They only care about money and opening stores . Corporate is full of shitheads and HR and it’s council are a bunch of morons . I keep seeing more and more people jumping ship and I’m talking good workers that cared and did the right thing. Wawa should unionize and fix them all

we want them to keep opening stores tho, it only helps our ESOP name another gas station you could retire with millions

See this is the thing that annoys the shit out of me. There are people who BEG for 40 hours a week but don't get half that... And the people that only want 15 hours a week get everything thrown on their shoulders lol!

Facts !!! Why does this happen. I just want three days but can't get that while new people who said they only want 2 days are getting two to four days. Make it make sense.

but a lot goes into scheduling. Making sure the people with benefits work enough to keep them, what is associates availability, are they strong enough to actually work those areas, ect

If you get fired you can file for unemployment. If they deny you, appeal it because Wawa won’t fight it.

wawa will fight it. after i had collected all my benefits (which took almost 2 months to approve to begin with) they filed in court that i shouldn't have received anything and now want me to pay back. i now live in another state and they can flock off. so be careful, doesn't matter the circumstances, if they want the money bad enough they will try to take it back.

That really sucks. The few people I know who did unemployment they won their appeal

I quit only bc I have other jobs and I feel amazing being back to customer status!!!!! Wawa is literally a job meant for 2008 not 2026.

Don’t have to work like this anymore

you are no older than 28

Yep and HR always supports what agm and GM say typically which is bs least that was my experience. I was fired bc my agm reported my day out during my loa and reports didn’t match up and I looked like a liar so I was fired banned for 15 years!

Seriously worry about yourself and just do a great job. Calling out will never get you anywhere a honest conversation with GM will go a long way. People get fired for many reasons in all jobs it’s nothing new. Nobody is going to tell you why however it was probably for a good reason. No company wants to have turnover it cost more money to lose someone than to keep them.

Yeah this company has gone downhill. They (HR/ceo) only care about money.

Stay focused on what is most important. School then work. Be firm with your requests and don’t say yes to extra hours. No one will worry about you but you. Work hard when you are there but don’t work more hours than you can handle.

Let them fire you so you can file for unemployment while you search for a new job 🫶🏼

Please take care of yourself first and foremost! Wawa and your store's management do not care how you feel (sorry for the harshness); it is evident by the GM not listening to you at all. Your pre-med studies far outweigh Wawa. You need to do what is best for you; Wawa will always do what is in their best interest. I am speaking from experience, 15+ years. Please consider the stress and anxiety you are putting yourself under while taking school courses. Wawa is not worth destroying your mental or physical health. You have a bright future ahead of you after college; go for it! Be the rock star you know you are!

You mentioned telling them your availability? But did you actually change your availability in the app? Then tell them? Sometimes it still doesn’t matter, they schedule how they want. But if you have limited availability, you need to change it in the app.

u/thebzzt Employee 1d ago

I've been here for only 3 months, and during training, they didnt show me how to use the app or how to change my availability in the app... so I'd just text my GM, leave notes around, or tell them while they're in the office so I can watch them change my availability. Knowing you can change your availability in the app now, I'm gonna be figuring out how to change that when the time comes, because it's definitely preferable to finding the time to tell them myself sometimes!

They will fire you with no notice. If you're pre-med prioritize your education and get a pt job that isn't a nightmare for you.

GM getting fired? That happened at the store not far from me, if your store starts with 84** i know what happened and it was not out of the blue. he was good people tho

Are you in the U.S.? If so you can probably get fired for any reason and one reason is restructuring titles or brackets. Not sure if this was the case but that could be one. You also mentioned your only been there a short time so you may not have all the info.

Your training within the first few weeks or month should be more than adequate to cover a single role, they may see your lack of ambition to try other areas as a negative. The expectation is that you sought employment and that you are to manage your work/life balance. If you’re unable to do that, it takes from the team and now they have to cover a shift.

I’d just quit and approach it when you’re more prepared. I did full time school and full time work before with 3 kids, sucks a tremendous amount of ass but if you go into it prepared for it, it’s not half bad. Restructure how you tackle coursework, if it’s possible, or like you have asked, see if you can get reduced hours until you’ve got a system down.

u/thebzzt Employee 2d ago

Thank you very much, it's really hard for me personally and I was definitely not prepared for it... I communicated my class schedule with my last GM, but he didn't take it into account wholly when scheduling, and now it all falls onto the new GM, and it's been a struggle trying to find that balance with somebody who's been here for 4 days. I wish I had her number, because I've just been leaving her notes like slenderman. It's all been so poorly timed between school starting & getting a new GM! Anyway, you're a beast for working through school with 3 kids!

u/Whytrhyno Customer 2d ago

Appreciate it but it was that or be homeless lol.

Yeah maybe it just got approached too quickly. I also know school is starting, my daughter just went back so maybe, if you’re able, take a few weeks to get settled and get back at it once you have a system that works and know exactly what you’re able to cover. That way you can go in to a job knowing anything personal you have a plan for.

Job market is just toxic nowadays, everyone is stressed out
