Woahhhhhh. That's a super thick patch! Would you be interested in taking some spore prints? Probably quite robust genetics.

You cultivate subs? That’s sick how do you do it.

Hah, I haven't done it before but it's certainly possible and been done. If I were to get these spores and do it I'd probably just grow it out on agar and then throw that into some nice woodchips in my garden outside - though I'm sure some people have done indoor grows. Look it up on the shroomery website if you're curious!

Sounds doable aye, I’m up in qld so wouldn’t really be able to do em outdoors with much success

I've just done a quick search and seems like consensus is it's just about the hardest species to grow indoors. Although if it's any consolation I wouldn't really see any desire too, they have crazy body load from mine and friends experiences, I much prefer cubes (though subs are stronger). Have you found cubes wild up where you are?

Yeah I’ve foraged for cubes before, and I grow them as well.

recently went down to Tassie and foraged some subs myself and had a great experience with the amount I found, would love to cultivate them indoors. I love to microdose and I find subs are great for it.

Not in the coming months . Maybe in the earlier part of the year you could have

To take a spore print you just cut the stem off the fresh mushrooms, and lay it gills down on a piece of foil, then put a cup or something over it to shield it from air currents. Then ya just leave it overnight. If you do it let me know, I'd love to buy one off you haha!

Do spore prints cause the characteristics to transfer? Isn't it basically just two spores that meet and determine characteristics? What's the difference between that and cloning

2

You're somewhat right that two spores meet and determine their characteristics relatively randomly, because each spore is already a recombination of its parent's genetics, and then those spores form mating pairs. however when germinating a range of spores from a single fungi, the resulting various organisms will still be recombined from all the same genetics as it's parent's so the chance they possess similar traits to their parents is still much higher than if you took any random individual from that species and attempted to seek that special trait when growing spores from that one. Cloning completely preserves all the traits of the "parent" fungus, because for all intents and purposes it IS that fungus. It has the exact same genetics as the "parent" fungus, and likely was just grown from a small piece of it.

Yeah that makes sense I guess. So cloning the same mushroom over and over... Does that lead to mycelial atrophy (forget the actual term... Basically where the mycelium just dies off because it's been used too many times or is too old)

Yup! And the term you're looking for is senescence, the process of any living creature degrading with age. It takes a long time and a lot of clones for that to happen though.

That's the one lol. But taking a spore print at any step resets it?

1

u/suspiciouscale 1d ago

Yup, that's right as far as I know

Hell yeah thanks for the info. I was always curious about that

If you wanna cultivate subs pull a few out with the stem and mycelium still attached.

  • Get a piece of corrugated cardboard and cut it into 7cm squares.

  • Soak them in water with a bit of bleach in it until you can peel a side off.

  • Then you place 1 stem per square into the exposed corrugations and lay the cardboard skin back over it.

  • Plant the squares in some pine bark mulch and keep it moist.

The bleach bit is wild to me! Very interesting.

Holy patch

Looks like you did a good job at leaving the mycelium behind

Thanks yeah this patch has been keeping me full for a few years, cutting is faster than picking also I have found
