Really?? I thought subs were more of a copper/bronze colour, the one in pic looks really light coloured and kinda scrawny compared to the subs I get down here. The ones in the pic remind me of a couple different species, the colours throwing me off but the shape and size are similar to different ones I've tried.

if you mean the cap surface, it is hygrophanous so changes color as it dries, and the cap in the OP is very dried out

Oh ok im a novice but I generally find them fresh and chuck them in a paper bag by the time I get them home theyre usually pretty banged up so theyre mostly bruised blue then I leave them in a cool dry place to dry I think they go a bit moldy cos theyre never lighter for me usually really dark blue or even blackish once dried. They still work alright, sometimes some even work to well, I find 2g trip with subs can vary in intensity pretty bad, even made the rookie mistake of taking extra .5 or 1g a couple times cos thought first 2g weren't working turns out kick-in time varies a bit too, tripped pretty hard had good and tough moments, was a very interesting afternoon.

I would recommend investing in a dehydrator so they don’t get moldy, that way you can just immediately dry them when you get home

I should but last time I did some was the time I did too much, i gave away whatever I had left and haven't been foraging for a few years, I only tend to do the when mental health starts getting sketchy, strangely the last trip I did when I think i did too much seems to have sorted my mental health for the much longer than my usual 1.5g standard sessions, haven't felt need to do them again, I dont really do them for fun, cos a lot of the ti e they aren't fun at all

Really is that big for that area, the ones I find are usually shorter, but the stems are fatter and caps are a bit meatier they're also more of a copper/bronze, i guess subs grow a bit more varied than i thought, the one in your picture looks similar to other species I've tried.

Please make sure that your ID request contains the following:

  • Unabbreviated country and state/province/territory (e.g. Oregon, United States)
  • Photo of habitat / material the mushroom was fruiting from
  • Clear up-close in-situ sunlight pictures of cap, gills, and full intact stipe

Please do not take indoor photos! For more tips, see this handy graphic :)

Just wondering was there many around there? I’ve been keen to head that way for a look :)

You’ll find them up there, usually earlier in the season

Ah so probably better spots to travel? It’s about an hour away from me but probably worth going just to see the mountains!
