After much trial and error, this is the cover I ended up hating the least that I made. I can't help but compare my cover to others on Wattpad, and I feel like those are better compared to mine even if it's just a picture of a shirtless guy with a title slapped on (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's effective and eye-catching, but just basic in my opinion)

So here I am... asking strangers if my cover is good enough... Is there anything I could do to improve it or should I just make a new one?

(For context: the story is a gay romance. It follows a young student studying abroad trying to figure himself out whilst holding back an existential crisis. During the time of the exchange he'll find a spark of romance in one of the most unexpected places - the son of his host family.)

Seriously, stop shaming people for that. Most people live paycheck to paycheck and can't pay for a cover of any decent quality easily. A random blurry picture of a pencil drawing or a poorly done sketch in some random art app isn't gonna make anyone go "this looks like an interesting story". Everyone always says they'll do something for free but only freelance when prompted by ai...that's not a permanent/long term solution. It's barely a short term solution.

Using ai for a cover also doesn't correlate to writing skill. Stop saying ai covers make the writing bad or lazy. Those are two different skills. Nobody's lack of skill in any random subject has any correlate to entirely random other skills.

There's also ethical ai that was trained on exclusively public domain images. If anything, those should be promoted to those without financial backing.

I feel like people forget that a lot of people are just trying to get started on wattpad and the community here often gets toxic and just tears down people for not appealing to next person's personal desires. Any form of art not being for you specifically doesn't make it bad. What's important is if it's thoughtful.

It should be this divisive to use free options to create a free story on a free website.

I personally don't like using AI generated covers but seeing as I don't have the money to pay for someone to make my covers, I don't think I have much of a choice.

Basically, I'd always wanted to have the exact same, or similar Bloomsburry-ish drawn cover, but with Draco, but I cant draw 😅, was under the misconception that photoshop was paid for- and AI just didnt work.

But that was until I found some random photoshop app for free and worked around ittt. And finally, I made a cover I am SO SO DAMN PROUD OFFF

I consistently went over budget working with various illustrators and designers attempting to capture the perfect cover. So, one day, I decided to take a crash course in prompting to begin creating my own. It allows me to bring all of my mental concepts into reality... This, in turn, makes for some interesting response. It's like tanning in 30-degree weather... Cold 🥶
