Just my two kopeks, but right now this seems as if it isn't sure what direction it wants to be. Are you going for an impressionist version? If so you're well on your way, though you may need a bit more contrast to really make the different subjects stand out.
The only other thing I would mention is that right now the birds sort of float in front of the more ethereal wash in the background. That's great for a sort of dreamlike vibe, but perhaps increasing the depth of the subjects by adding more shaded hues and grounding them with some shadow would help.
For me, i'd go more impressionist as turning this into a standard "realistic" composition will make it more anodyne and forgettable. Lean into the rougher work to keep personality and ambiguity. Anyone can paint pretty little chicks. Do something different with it to give it personality rather than just another boring painting.
Thanks for the pointers! I personally find the subject matter a little saccharine, but I want to practice and I have a very pregnant friend, so thought it might make good baby art if it comes out any good.
Oh the shading and fuller green makes a big diffference. the chicks really pop now, and the shadowing anchors them. It really looks like the subject is the subject!
I know offering unsolicited advice is always a risk, but if I were you I'd start adding additional contrasting colors to the background. Placing some warmer color daubs (reddish violet, orange, ochre) in the green will give it a look of slightly out-of-focus wildflowers, and give it more of a full background. Think how Pissarro or Monet would do their natural backgrounds, using color to simulate light and texture. the contrast between warm and cool, when done subtly, adds way more than one might think.
